In the spirit of Saint Joan Antida Thouret,we prepare young women

to lead and serve in a global societythrough a values-based Catholic education.

Our theme for the 2010-11 school year was “It’s a NewDay at SJA.” We certainly lived up to these expectations

as we celebrated NEW programs, NEW faculty and staff,NEW students, and many NEW accomplishments. You allhave played a significant role in our NEW day and we aremost appreciative of your support and involvement in ourschool.

This year our efforts have focused on increasingopportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,Math) fields. Not only is there a great need in our city, country, and world for expertise in these areas, there is alsoa severe lack of women, especially women of color, in thesefields. We initiated some NEW strategies to address this. Allfreshwomen were required to take the Introduction toEngineering course. This was a first at SJA and we wereunsure of what results we would get. We have great news toshare. Almost all of the students passed this course andmany have found a new interest in engineering. This meansthey will continue in their studies. For many years, SJA hasoffered four years of engineering classes but there was areluctance on the part of many students to take thesechallenging courses. Now we have significantly increased thepool of students choosing to continue in this area.We havemore than 120 of our girls enrolled in various engineeringcourses. Many partnerships were created to support thisundertaking including having MSOE student tutors work inour classrooms. Area business involvement from practicingengineers was an additional part of classroom support. Wealso conducted our first ever Engineering fair, inviting middleschool girls to visit our program and learn about offerings. We could only accommodate 50 girls, yet 250 applied! TimeWarner Cable, our neighbor and partner, supported thiseffort. We are eager to continue and expand this offering.

A few years ago we openedthree new Science labsthanks to the generoussupport of the Todd WehrFoundation. This year wehave added sciencecourses, participated in theLead to Succeed programwhich focuses on environ-mental science, and have won accolades from MSOE for ourSMART Team’s participation in the Center for BioMolecularModeling. Our partnership with PAVE (Partners AdvancingValues in Education) has afforded us the opportunity to workwith a consultant as we continue to improve and designprograms in the STEM area that will not only challenge ourstudents but support our efforts to attract new students to ourschool.

These are just a few examples of the “NEW DAYAT SJA.” Asthe year comes to a close, we continue to thank all of youwho have supported our girls and their education throughyour time, talent and treasures. We especially thank ourfounding order, the dear Sisters of Charity, who started thisschool in 1954 and have always maintained theircommitment to our school and our girls. Keep us in yourprayers as we continue to support the mission of St. JoanAntida High School.

Sincerely,

Cynthia A. MarinoHead of School

A Message from the Board Chair“It is about the girls.” If I have heard it once, I have heard it a hundred times at Board Meetingsduring these past years. All decisions and plans are made within the context of the Mission andVision of St. Joan Antida High School. And so I am privileged to be Board Chair of a mission-driven board.

Last year when we were changing administrative structures and gathering people to revisionacademics at St. Joan Antida, the driving force for making the changes and the energy toimplement them came from the conviction, not only of the board but equally so from Ms. CynthiaMarino, that St. Joan is a place where “each student’s intellect and talents are nurtured andcultivated, empowering them to be independent, competent and productive members of theSociety.”

A special thanks to all of you for your support for the mission and the young women attending St. Joan. Providing qualityCatholic education in the spirit of St. JoanAntida for a diverse student body will provide for our Churches and society a placewhere peace, justice and love will thrive. God bless you, your families and St. Joan Antida High School.

Sincerely,

Rev. Douglas J. LeonhardtBoard Chair

A Message from Our SponsorIt was a New Day at SJA! The prophet Isaiah proclaimed in Chapter 43 Verse 19, “See, I am doingsomething new! Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” These words evoke excitement, thepromise of new life, new growth and transformation. Did you feel it?

A New Day at SJA was possible because our high school has been built on the foundation of asolid past, which was blessed by the heritage and wisdom of our Foundress, St. Joan Antida, theSisters of Charity of St. Joan Antida, the Administration, Faculty, Staff and Alumnae. They pavedthe way for a “future that begins today.”

Together we embraced again the challenge and privilege to educate and form our young womenwith the skills they need to live and lead in the 21st Century. We continue to count on yourgoodness and generosity as you collaborate with us in our most important mission: to form eachyoung woman to be a reflection of the love of God in our world today.

Yes, indeed, it was and is truly a New Day at SJA!

With much gratitude,

Sr. Anne Marie BaemmertProvincialSisters of Charity of St. Joan Antida
