SUMMER 2015

ACE15 By Jeff Pearson, Susan Uyesugi, and Joanna Seto

T his year’s American Waterworks Association

annual conference, ACE15, was held in

Anaheim, California from June 7-10, 2015, at

the Anaheim Convention Center. The AWWA Hawaii

Section had a strong showing with more than 70 people

signing up from Hawaii and our new Guam subsection.

In the past, the Hawaii Section would get together at an

early Monday morning breakfast to have a fun start to

the conference, make some introductions and brief

remarks, and get the conference kicked off for the

Section. This breakfast would be followed by a mad

rush to get to the Opening General Session on time, where we always seemed to have too few seats

assigned to the Hawaii Section. However, due to the higher costs the hotel had quoted for breakfast this

year, in excess of $50 per person, and with

the rush to the opening session, we decided

to try something new.

This year, we held the Hawaii Section get-

together on the Sunday night before the

conference for a casual talk story with

pupu and cocktails. We charged $20 per

person as in the past. The event took

place at M3 Live Bar and Grill, less than a

mile from the conference hotels. Over 70

people attended, with good food and good

conversation. It seemed like a successful

event so please give your Section officers

feedback on whether to repeat this format

or return to the breakfast on Monday

morning for ACE16.

ACE15, continued from page 1

With time to spare on Monday

morning, the Hawaii Section had a

great showing at the opening general

session. We had an additional two

rows of seats compared to last year,

and we nearly filled them all. Most

members came dressed in colorful

aloha attire, armed with a lei or two

to share the aloha with other ACE

attendees. The Hawaii Section can be

proud of our showing at the Monday

opening session.

This year the conference was shortened. The

exhibitors opened Monday morning as opposed to

Sunday, and the conference sessions ended on

Wednesday instead of Thursday. Since 1998, Hawaii

Section officers and committee chairs have stopped by

the booths of exhibitors who attended our Pacific

Water Conference earlier in the year. We thanked

them for their participation in Hawaii and gave them

Hawaiian Host candies as a mahalo. It was a long walk

to stop at over 40 booths, but it was well worth it to

show these vendors some aloha.

After the opening session, we all went our

separate ways to attend various conference

sessions and activities, only to get together each

night at some of the many after-conference

functions that were provided by consultants and

vendors. Some of the activities included visiting

the Groundwater Replenishment System in

Orange County, California which takes highly

treated wastewater and purifies it to a quality

that exceeds state and federal drinking water

standards suitable for replenishing the

groundwater basin.

The Big Island Tapping Team of Ted Lindsey, Norris Gonsalves, Roy Miyasaki and Leonard Midallia was ready

for the pipe tapping contest again this year. Their best time was 1:56:03 with one 10 second penalty for pipe

threads for a total of 2:06:03. That was a great time, however, there were some very fast teams competing,

and the team from Mexico took the title. Our guys get first place in my book for their hard effort!

Also this year at ACE15, the Hawaii Section was

awarded the Club 7 award for the highest percentage

of new members in the past calendar year for AWWA

sections of similar size. The Hawaii Section increased

membership from 413 to 440 members over all

categories of membership. Congratulations to

Membership Committee Chair Jason Takaki for his

work gathering new members.

We would also like to congratulate John

Stubbart for winning the George Warren

Fuller Award! This is a huge honor and it

was well-deserved.

It was a pleasure to be involved in the all

the Hawaii Section activities and a joy to

see how we all make such a positive

impression on so many others at the

conference. We look forward to attending

next year’s conference in Chicago with all

of you. §

Chair’s Message By Jeffrey Pearson

Hawaii Section Chair

T his message is coming to you

from your new AWWA Hawaii

Section Chair, and I am honored

to be here. With all the support I am

getting already from the 2015-2016

Executive Committee (Director Ken Ota,

Vice Chair Mike Street, Immediate Past Chair Joanna Seto, Secretary

John Chung, and Treasurer Audrey Yokota), my one year at Chair will

be enjoyable and productive. A MAHALO also to our Board of Trustees

(Juanita Colon, Kevin Ihu, Keith Okamoto, Peter Ono, Mike Victorino,

Jay Stone, and Rich Hopkins), Committee Chairs (Kyle Augustino, Mike

Bungcayao, Joy Gannon, Lorna Heller, Trevor Inouye, Ross Kaneko,

Paul Kemp, Marek Kirs, Eassie Miller, Susan Mukai, Dean Nakano, Mark

Ohigashi, Paul Scott, Alyssa “Sunshine” Smith, Jason Takaki, and Susan

Uyesugi), and Subsection Chairs (Paul Kemp and Christine Richardson).

The ACE15, held in Anaheim, California June 7 - 10, was a busy time for

the AWWA Hawaii Section. This is the first year we did not have a

Monday Hawaii Section breakfast, opting for a Sunday Night “get-

together” at the M3 LIVE Bar and Grill, minutes away from the host

hotel. We had about 70 people in attendance to enjoy each others

company, have some pupu, and talk story. By all accounts it was a

successful event. With Mike Street in charge next year, we will see

what the plan is for ACE16 in Chicago.

Hawaii Section Mission Statement

The Hawaii Section AWWA is dedicated to the promotion of public health and welfare in the provision of drinking water of unquestionable

quality and sufficient quantity. The Hawaii Section AWWA must be proactive and effective in advancing the technology, science,

management, and government policies relative to the stewardship of water.

Summer 2015 5

There was also a large Hawaii contingency at the Opening General Session

the following Monday morning. We were all decked out in aloha attire and

armed with leis to share with the unsuspecting people of other sections. As

always, there were too many technical sessions to attend and too many

after conference functions to attend. Thanks to all the Hawaii Section folks

that helped provide a positive showing at ACE 15.

To conclude the ACE 15 highlights, the Hawaii Section received an award

for our increased membership over the past year. Thanks to Jason Takaki

and others for helping to earn this award.

Please sign up for the Safety Workshop on August 6, at the Hilo Hawaiian

Hotel. For more information contact Trevor Inouye. We also have a Board

meeting scheduled for September 17th on Oahu. More details on the

meeting to follow. Please look for Jay Stone’s article in this issue, discussing

the upcoming Pacific Water Conference, scheduled for February 2-4, 2016.

It will be a tough act to follow behind Joanna Seto’s tenure as Chair, but I

look forward to working with the Hawaii Section, along with Vice Chair

Mike Street, to move the Section towards a productive and enjoyable

year.§

Director’s Message By Ken Ota

Hawaii Section Director

G ood weather… Better learning…

BEST networking!

Though I never made it to Disneyland, it was a great conference at ACE15 in Anaheim, California. The Hawaii Section consisted of 75 islanders, spreading the Aloha spirit throughout the four day conference. We made several new friends at ACE15’s Opening Session by passing out beautiful handmade leis to various section neighbors. Thank you all for coming out!

Association Updates from ACE15: Brenda Lennox from Pacific Northwest Section will be named AWWA

President-Elect at ACE16 in Chicago. AWWA officially opened the AWWA India office in Mumbai this past

month. Gaurav Sood will serve as AWWA India’s Executive Manager. Tracy Mehan was appointed AWWA’s Executive Director of

Government Affairs. Mr. Mehan will be our Water Policy Leader in Washington, D.C. on August 3rd. He will be leading the Association’s legislative, regulatory, and advocacy efforts.

Community Engineering Corps is in full swing. CE Corps helps underserved communities in the United States meeting their infrastructure needs and improve each community member’s quality of life. Alliance with - AWWA, ASCE, and EWB-USA. Two projects were adopted by AWWA this year and are currently working with Virginia and CA/NV Section. AWWA Sections are still just learning about CE Corps and learning about the project process.

Update on AWWA “Total Water Solutions” – The Association would like to expand the knowledge resources not only in drinking water but also in the areas of wastewater, water reuse, and storm water. Drinking water, wastewater, reuse, and storm water management are very closely linked in today’s world. Reuse water is a viable alternative for many utilities.

Future Dates for ACE: ACE 2016 Chicago

ACE 2017 Philadelphia ACE 2018 Las Vegas

Congratulations again to John Stubbart who was honored for the George Warren Fuller Award!

I would also like to thank Maui boy/sandbagger, Jeff Pearson, and Susan Uyesugi for planning our Aloha dinner at M3 Live. §

2016 Pacific Water Conference Update By Jay Stone

Conference Committee Chair

T he Hawai‘i Section of the American Water Works Association and the Hawai‘i Water Environment Association are proud to announce the third annual joint conference now known as the Pacific Water Conference at the Hawai‘i Convention Center from February 2 - 4, 2016. We have received

several entries for this year's theme contest and will announce the winner soon. Our joint conference committee is hard at work to bring you an exciting, fun, and educational conference. These are some things you can do prior to the conference: Help support the conference with a monetary contribution or placing an advertisement in the conference

booklet. Reserve your exhibit booth soon before the spaces are sold out.

Submit an abstract to be a speaker. Keep an eye out for a call-for-papers flyer that will be distributed soon.

The conference will feature almost an entire week of activities kicking off with Pre‐Conference workshops at the Hawai‘i Convention Center on Tuesday, February 2 with tracks for water and wastewater operators and professionals, as well as a workshop targeted at developing personal and professional skills for young professionals. The Conference officially opens on Wednesday, February 3. Join us in the Convention Center Exhibit Hall to cheer on this year’s operator competitions featuring HWEA’s Operations Challenge (Part 1) and AWWA’s Pipe Tapping and Top Ops events. Remember to check out the exhibitors showcasing the newest and latest products in the industry. With 6 technical session tracks to choose from, there’s sure to be one that piques your interest. The day will close with the always-popular “Meet & Greet” hosted by the exhibitors in the Exhibit Hall. Catch up with old friends or make new ones. Thursday’s program will feature HWEA’s Operations Challenge (Part 2) and more technical sessions. The Installation Program and Awards Banquet will be held in the evening for both AWWA and HWEA. The conference golf tournament will be held on Friday, February 5 at the Hawai‘i Prince Golf Course. Form your own team or compete one-on-one with friends and colleagues. Conference week will end with a community service event on Saturday, February 6. We look forward to a great turnout just like at this past year’s community service event. Registration, hotel information, and other details will be posted on the conference web site www.pacificwaterconference.com after August 1. Check the web site after August 1 for more information. Subsection Joins the Section at ACE15 By Paul Kemp

Western Pacific Subsection Chair

A fter the success of the first Subsection Conference, the

AWWA-HIWPS has begun working with the Section Board and

our Hawaii representative, Dean Nakano (Pacific Rim

Committee Chair), on budget planning for the coming year.

With summer vacations inhibiting meeting plans, it will likely be September before the Subsection Board can hold a meeting with all present. The current issues are the annual calendar, budget, and synchronization of the Subsection Terms of Office with those of the Section. As with all AWWA members, the main summer activity has been the National Annual Convention and Exposition (ACE15) in June. The Subsection Chair, Paul Kemp, and Subsection Vice-chair, Geigy Salayon, members Vincent Dueñas, Calvin Yam and Ron Topasña, and Consolidated Commission on Utilities (CCU) commissioners: Chairman Joseph T. Dueñas, Commissioner Francis Santos, Commissioner George Bamba and Commissioner Pedro Guerrero were able to join with Hawaii Section attendees, sponsored by Guam Waterworks Authority (GWA). As always there were too many desired activities to fit everything we wanted to do into the time of the conference. Even with an early start getting together on Sunday with people with whom we work but don’t often get to see there is always more to do than we can get done. From the recommendations received after our first Subsection conference that we add a trade show, the Exposition provided an excellent opportunity to reach out to new friends and contacts. The incredible array of presentations also sparked ideas for our next effort. Most of all it was a wonderful time to get better acquainted with our Section. §

Keith Okamoto Named Manager/Chief Engineer of the Hawaii County Water

Department

T he AWWA Hawaii Section wishes to congratulate Keith Okamoto, Water

Utilities Trustee, in his recent promotion to Manager/Chief Engineer for

the Hawaii Department of Water Supply. The Water Board unanimously

approved Keith after interviewing him and two other candidates in an all day

meeting on June 23rd. He will oversee a staff of 168 employees, and an annual

budget of over $50 million.

Keith has worked for the Hawaii Department of Water Supply since 1996 and has

worked his way through the ranks to become assistant Engineering Division head

in 2003, where he also was assigned to oversee the department’s capital

improvement projects. Keith replaces Quirino Antonio Jr. who retired after more than 40 years with the

department.

We all wish Keith good luck and good fortune in this new challenging position. §

Young Professionals: Waianae Mountains Watershed Partnership Community Service

By Mark Ohigashi

Youth Education Committee and YP Secretary

O n Saturday, June 20, a small group of

volunteers from the Young Professionals (YP)

organization of AWWA Hawai‘i Section and

HWEA attended its second community service event at

the vegetative fire break project in the hills of the

Waianae Kai Forest Reserve. Our group was joined by

the Young Member Group (YMG) of the Structural

Engineers Association of Hawaii (SEAOH) in a combined

effort to assist the ongoing project headed by the

Waianae Mountains Watershed Partnership (WMWP)

and the State Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Last year, the YPs assisted in clearing invasive koa haole by cutting the plants down and applying herbicide to

the stumps; so this year, we were able to see the fruits of our previous labor in the form of a large swath of

cleared land out planted with native dryland plants like milo, ilima and wiliwili. The cleared area alongside a

Board of Water Supply service road serves as an assistive fire break for fighting brush fires that may threaten

both the forest reserve in the mountain and homes in the lowland areas of the valley. The work done this

year included the arduous, but important, task of removing fire-adapted weeds that are threatening to choke

the native plants planted by WMWP staff and local community groups throughout the past year. Good times

were had by all while working through social conversation and a misting rain that blessed all of the

volunteers. A cool and refreshing lunch were provided by YP and SEAOH YMG for all of the volunteers under

the warm West Oahu sun.

Stay tuned for YP’s next community service project! Don’t forget that while these projects are sponsored by

the Young Professionals organization, all AWWA Hawai‘i Section members and their guests (unless otherwise

specified) are invited to volunteer

and have fun!

Finally, if you would like to be the

next YP Community Service Chair,

please send an e-mail to Mark

Ohigashi, YP Secretary, at

[email protected]. §

We had a huge turnout of over twenty five YPs and a few seasoned professionals as well. There

were many familiar faces, but it was exciting to see new YPs checking out this event. Cliff Lum

showed his support for the YP group by showing up and bringing friends.

As always, this was a great networking opportunity and a chance to catch up with people we may not see too

often. Thank you to all those who made this event a blast, and we look forward to seeing everyone at our

Newsletter Advertising

The Hawaii Section of the American Water Works Association (AWWA) is currently seeking advertisers for its quarterly newsletter. Advertising provides a direct message to a population of over 600 members state-wide who are in need of the products or services being advertised. Although we have switched to electronic distribution of the newsletter, we feel that there is still equal benefit to advertising in the electronic newsletter as with the printed newsletter. In addition, advertising in the electronic newsletter can be in full color. Please be aware that advertising in the newsletter is available only to businesses related to the drinking water field. Please also note that all advertisements will be submitted for review and approval by the AWWA Hawaii Section Board of Trustees for ad content.
