WHY I CHOSE PARSONS FOR MY INTERNSHIP
• This was my first internship that is related to my field of study• This internship will give me an opportunity to prepare me for my career in
engineering• This was a good opportunity to meet different types of engineers • Meeting other interns with similar interests
WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT PARSONS
• Parsons was founded in 1944 by Ralph Monroe Parsons• Parsons is a leading firm that have over 100 locations worldwide• Parsons have five different types of business units: PCG, PE&I, PGS, PTG, &
MEA• Parsons is part of STP: Southeastern Transportation Partners• Parsons core values are safety, quality, integrity, diversity, innovation, and
sustainability• Parsons and WorkCare partnered together to prevent incident intervention,
which is a resource designed to provide Parsons employees with immediate access to qualified medical clinicians who are able to provide the employees with prompt medical assessment
DAILY TASKS• Arrive to the Portsmouth Tunnel Facility around 7am• Check the intern schedule to see what inspector I’m assigned for the
morning and/or afternoon• Go with the inspector to either of these following locations:
New Midtown TunnelNorfolk or Portsmouth ApproachMLK Extension
• Either I shadow the inspector or do the inspection with some help • Takes some notes while out on the field• For rest of the day, I either work on my report or do some errands in the
office
CHALLENGES FROM THE INTERNSHIP
• Having no knowledge what’s going on the project during the first couple of weeks during the internship
• Trying not to suffer from heat exhaustion when going out to the field• Trying to keep myself occupied in the office• Struggling with verbal tenses when writing summary report every week
ORGANIZATION EVALUATION
Pros• Learning experience• Meeting the staff• Meeting different engineering
companies• Did my own concrete testing with
help• Watched how concrete and repair
concrete is mixed
Cons• Disorganized during the first two
weeks• Trying to keep occupied when in
office• The Weather
EFFECT FROM THE INTERNSHIP
Educational• Change my opinion about
Construction• Seeing everything in person
instead in a textbook• Share my experience with fellow
engineering students and professors
Career Decision• It change my perspective on
construction• Allowed me to explore the
construction side of civil engineering
• Share my knowledge about my experience to other engineering firms

Before• I knew a little about Parsons and
what projects Parsons have done• I was wondering what will I be
doing during the internship • What is Parsons part in the
project?
After• Enjoyed meeting other employees
working with Parsons• Safety is Parsons number one
concern• Every Parsons employees supports
each other
BENEFITS FROM THIS INTERNSHIP
• My writing skill improved a little bit • Learning how to read rebar from the tags and plans• Have a better understanding when reading plans• Shadowing an inspector does help me to gain more insight on the project • Touring the Rehabilitation Work of the Westbound Downtown Tunnel• Knowing the difference between rehabilitation work and construction
work• Being more observant when it comes to safety issues
