Our story begins—more accurately, the sound suppressorstory begins—at the turn of the century, when HiramMaxim introduced his Maxim Model 1909. For the next 93 years, sound suppressor designs remained virtuallyunchanged, and so did the way they were used: asspecialized devices for short-range, semiautomatic-fireapplications. A tool to be attached to a weapon on missions where the target was close and a protractedgunfight was unlikely.

But things changed in 2002 when SureFire formed itsSuppressor Division. We approached the task of building a better suppressor the way we do everything: Build thebest, no matter what the cost. Our mission? To create a lightweight sound suppressor that effectively atten uatedsound and reduced a weapon’s flash/dust signature with outany sacrifice in the weapon’s performance. A supp ressordurable enough to leave permanently attached yet versatileenough to remove and re-attach in seconds. Also important, any small shift it produced in the weapon's point of impactshould be consistent—the same amount and direction, no matter how many times the suppressor was attachedand detached.

A few years, and one state-of-the-art manufacturing facility later, SureFire has accomplished everything we set out to do. Our compact, lightweight suppressors arehigh-performance equipment that significantly attenuatesound; typically improve a weapon's accuracy; producezero or min imal shift in a weapon's unsuppressed point of impact; consistently repeat any shift; and are moredurable than the barrels they're mounted on. They makefulltime suppressor use not only possible but in most cases preferable.

Today, SureFire suppressors help warfighters enjoy atactical advantage over their enemies, help protect thehearing of law enforcement professionals, and allowcivilians to enjoy shooting with state-of-the-art suppressorsthat are every bit as sophisticated as their expensivefirearms. Our story has a happy ending for all—except for bad guys and other suppressor manufacturers.

BARRY DUECKSUPPRESSOR DIVISION DIRECTOR

Behind every successful organization is a passionate leader rallying the troops to get the job done. Barry Dueck is that leader for SureFire’sSuppressor Division.

A former Marine, SureFire Institute founding instructor, and a nationallyranked IPSC multi-gun shooter, Barry lists his proudest accomp lishmentas providing our nation’s military and law enforcement professionals withsuppressors that give them a significant advantage over the enemy.

Barry had been designing suppressors for years before taking the reinsof SureFire’s new division. Dr. John Matthews, SureFire’s founder and president, offered Barry full support with one condition: Do for suppressors what SureFire did for flashlights and weapon-mountedlights—build the absolute best, establishing the standard by which allothers are measured.

Barry and his team have not let John down…much to the chagrin of enemies of freedom and law and order around the world.

For Private Citizens

• Help protect against short-term and permanenthearing loss from gunfire, which can result from a single gunshot

• Increase shooting enjoyment by reducing weapon recoil, lessening fatigue and allowing faster follow-up shots and instant observation of bullet impact

• Enhance marksmanship by reducing anticipation of recoil or muzzle flash, allowing a shooter to better concentrate on shooting mechanics

• Improve the learning curve for beginning shooters by reducing gunfire intimidation from recoil and loud noise

• Reduce the negative effects of gunfire noise on nearby people, pets, livestock, and wildlife

SUPPRESSOR BENEFITS

For Military & Law Enforcement

• Help protect shooters and team members from short-term and permanent hearing loss from gunfire, which can result from a single gunshot

• Allow more effective communications and situational awareness in tactical situations where shots are fired

• Mask a shooter’s location by altering gunfire sound characteristics and significantly reducing a weapon’s muzzle flash and dust signature

• Help preserve a shooter’s night vision by virtually eliminating muzzle flash

• Reduce weapon recoil, lessening shooting fatigue and allowing for faster follow-up shots and instant observation of bullet impact

• Enhance marksmanship by reducing anticipation of recoil or muzzle flash, allowing a shooter to better concentrate on shooting mechanics

• Allow training facilities to comply with local noise ordinances

Contrary to popular belief a “silencer,” as suppressors are oftenerroneously called, does not make a weapon silent. Nothing does. However, suppressors do offer many benefits to both tacticalprofessionals and general shooters.

Zero or Minimal Point-of-Impact Shift

A SureFire suppressor produces little or no change in yourweapon’s unsuppressed point of impact. Which means, formost purposes, you don’t have to alter your point of aimor re-zero your weapon after attaching one.

Consistent Shift

If there is any minor shift in point of impact, you can counton it to be the same every time—no matter how manyattach/detach cycles the suppressor’s been through.

Increased Accuracy

Groups typically improve with a SureFire suppressor att a ched. This is attributable to SureFire's proprietarysuppressor design, which dampens vibration, reduces recoil, and affects other ballistic dynamics. Will a SureFiresuppressor make you a better shot? That’s what practice is for. But it’ll put the rounds where you point them.

Extreme Durability

SureFire suppressors are made from special alloys thatare extremely resistant to both high temperatures and toerosion from superheated gases and particles that caneat away other suppressors. Cutting-edge materials, redundant welding, and advanced engineering help aSureFire suppressor stand up to heat, pressure, and otherforces that can tear a lesser suppressor apart. In fact, aSureFire suppressor can be expected to outlast the barrelit’s mounted on—with no decrease in performance overthe life of the suppressor.

High-Performance Sound Attenuation

SureFire suppressors are equal or superior to competitivesound suppressors in effectively attenuating sound, generally reducing a weapon's sound signature to well belowthe OSHA 140 dB maximum safe level. The actual amountof sound reduction depends on many factors, including theweapon, the ammunition fired, elevation, atmosphericconditions, testing method ology, and more. SureFire uses its own state-of-the-art equipment to measure suppressorperformance—not a claim every other suppressormanufacturer can make. So when you read a statement like“Our suppressor reduces a weapon’s sound by X decibels,”don’t buy it. They’re just making noise.

Fast, Easy, No-Tools Attachment

Slide the suppressor over the muzzle adapter and secure the cam ring at the base. It’s on and off in less than fiveseconds. No tools, no super-human strength required.

Solid, Secure Attachment

When you attach a SureFire Fast-Attach® suppressor to yourweapon, it stays mounted, solidly and securely. It doesn’tloosen with firing or vibrations like other suppressors can.

Minimal Weight and Length

SureFire suppressors are designed to be small and light and to add as little length to your weapon as possible. Andthanks to the high-temp alloys used, you don’t sacrifice anystrength or durability for weight reduction.

There are sound suppressors, and there are SureFire sound suppressors—the world’sfinest. SureFire suppressors enhance the benefits of regular suppressor use and add evenmore by providing the highest level of performance, reliability, and durability available. THE SUREFIRE

Fulltime Usability

Fulltime use with a SureFire suppressor is not only possiblebut preferable. A SureFire suppressor adds minimal lengthand weight to your weapon, so it won’t bog you down orhamper your maneuverability. And with our patented Fast-Attach® system, you can revert to unsuppressedmode in seconds. But with the benefits of soundsuppression, increased accuracy, and legendary durability, why not leave it on? With SureFire, you have the option.

Increased Safety

Anything can happen in the heat of battle, and SureFiresuppressors are built with this in mind. Should a SureFiresuppressor ever be bent or forced out of alignment, ourfail-safe baffle system allows a bullet to continue safelydownrange, even if it strikes an internal baffle. Othersuppressors, with typical conical baffles, can deflect thebullet through the side of the suppressor, an extremelydangerous situation for the operator and those around him.

Combat-Proven Reliability

Used under extreme conditions around the world, SureFiresound suppressors have delivered as promised. Operatorsin combat give them a strong thumbs-up, and they aren't the kind to sugarcoat things.

No Permanent Weapon Modifications

Most weapons don’t require any permanent modificationsto accept a SureFire suppressor. Simply replace yourweapon’s flash hider with the appropriate SureFire adapterand a SureFire suppressor will attach in seconds.

Adapter Stand-Alone Functionality

SureFire makes three kinds of suppressor adapters: muzzlebrakes, flash hiders, and compensators. These adaptersfunction efficiently as stand-alone devices that enhanceyour weapon’s performance and appearance, but they also serve as rock-solid mounting platforms for SureFiresuppressors. Suppressors and adapters can be purchasedseparately. One SureFire suppressor can be used on anysame-caliber firearm equipped with an appropriateSureFire adapter.COMBAT- PROVENRELIABILITY

SOUND SUPPRESSOR CONSTRUCTION

Fast-Attach® System perfectly aligns the suppressor andlocks it solidly into place in seconds, ensuring consistent, minimal (or zero) shift in a weapon’s point of impact.

Lightweight, High-Temperature Alloys resist extremetemperatures and erosion from super-heated gases and particles and keep suppressor weight down.

Solid Construction—Redundant welds mean no partsloosening due to extreme heat, impact, vibration, orhot/cold cycles.

Fail-Safe Baffles ensure that an unbalanced or defectiveprojectile will pass through the baffles and continue downrangerather than deflecting and exiting the suppressor side wall.

Minimal Weight and Length—SureFire suppressors aredesigned to be as small and light as possible, whilemaintaining superior sound and flash suppression performance.

Adapter Functionality—SureFire suppressor adapters performalone as effective flash hiders, compensators, or muzzle brakes, depending on adapter type chosen.

SUPPRESSED FIRE:A TACTICAL ADVANTAGE IN COMBAT

Don AlexanderU.S. Army Special Forces (Ret.)

Of all the equipment that can be added to a high-tech assault rifle, a soundsuppressor ranks as one of the most useful. Originally used primarily forspecialized missions by snipers and SOF operators, suppressors are becomingmore mainstream in the U.S. military as individuals and unit commandersrecognize the many benefits they offer.

A reduction in noise and a diminished dust/flash signature from a weapon areat the top of the list of suppressor benefits. They allow an operator to main -tain a tactical advantage over an opponent in a gunfight because suppressedshots are much harder to detect and counter. In fact, when suppressedweapons are used, most enemies don’t even realize they’re being fired at. And once they do, they typically have a difficult time determining where theshots are coming from. While they may hear the sonic crack of a round, theyprobably won’t recognize it for what it is unless they’re very experienced orextremely well trained.

During my 26-year career I used suppressors—on submachine guns, assaultrifles, and machine guns—on a half-dozen separate combat tours. I foundthem to be an indispensable tool. Not only do they make a modern-daywarrior more lethal and effective in combat, they help increase his odds of survival. Odds every operator wants to tip in his favor.

ACCURACY & CONSISTENCY

Minimal, Consistent Zero Shift

Most higher-quality sound suppressors offer comparableamounts of noise reduction. However, they vary greatly in other areas, including accuracy, durability, and in theireffect on a firearm’s unsuppressed point of impact andgroup size. For example, the current-issue SOCOM supp ressor shifts a firearm’s point of impact an average of four inches at 100 yards and reportedly, in individualinstances, as much twelve inches. This can put a roundcompletely off the targetat 50 yards.

When SureFire enteredthe sound suppressorbus i ness, one of our goalswas to design a supp -ressor that produces mini mal and consistentpoint-of-impact shift when going from unsuppressed tosuppressed mode. Minimal meaning one minute of angle(MOA) or less, and consistent mean ing any shift thatoccurred had to be the same amount and the samedirection every time the suppressor was attached.

The SureFire suppressor team hit their mark: their first run of suppressors, a batch of 100 M4FA’s deliveredto a special operations group, produced an average shift of less than one MOA during testing. Operators from thisgroup have reported that they had absolutely no shift in point of impact.

Group Size Improvement

It doesn’t matter how quiet your shots are if they don’t hitwhere they’re aimed. With SureFire suppressors, firearmaccuracy usually improves. Groups typically tighten up,sometimes moderately, sometimes significantly. Why?

Precision manufacturing ensures extremely tight tolerances, eliminating any misalignment that couldadversely affect accuracy.

Solid, consistent attachmentvia SureFire’s Fast-Attach®

system clamps the supp ressor securely to thebarrel, perfectly aligning thebores of the suppressor and

weapon. And the suppressor locks into precisely the sameposition every single time.

Reduced recoil and muzzle flash allows a shooter to betterconcentrate on shooting mechanics.

SureFire Fast-Attach® sound suppressorsprovide negligible or minimal shifting ofa firearm’s normal point of impact and typically improve group size.

Materials

SureFire suppressors are made from extraordinary high-temperature aerospace alloys capable of beingheated to extreme temperatures, expanding, and thencooling down and contracting—without compromisingany of the suppressor’s structural integrity.

Our suppressors have been extensively tested by super-heating them and using special tools to measure thetemperature. We've determined the most advantageousmixture of high-temp alloys for maximum durability andstrength. As a side benefit, because these alloys aresuper-strong, our supp ressors weigh less than if theywere made of pure stainless steel.

SureFire Sound Suppressors12

The extreme forces at work on SureFire sound suppressors require them to be exceptionally strong and durable.EXTREME DURABILITY

The physics of suppressor science can be a bit mind-boggling. Very simply put, suppressors convertsound energy into heat energy, so there’s a lot of heat atwork on that metal cylinder at the end of your weapon.

Other forces take their toll on a suppressor too, includingpressure spikes and erosion from gas, unburned powderresidue, and carbon particles. Super-heated gas andparticles leave the muzzle and hit the rearmost baffle like a highly charged bead blaster. Lesser suppressors can only withstand a limited amount of this punishmentbefore the peppering destroys the baffles or erodes thebaffle holes. This can ultimately lead to catastrophicfailure, sometimes resulting in a bullet exiting throughthe side of the suppressor—a very dangerous situation.

How a suppressor holds up under these forces—as well as external forces from Mother Nature, combatconditions, and operator abuse—is a function of itsmaterials, its design, and the quality of manufacturingused to put it together. Not surprisingly, SureFiresuppressors lead the way in each area.

Page 16: Suppressor Catalog10

13

Design

Engineered to perform, SureFire suppressors are alsomade to last. From baffle design to redundant welding (a SureFire suppressor has between 80 and 120 internalwelds) to our patented Fast-Attach® mechanisms, we’vedone our homework, putting pencil to paper and doing themath. Our designs aren’t theoretical, either. We put oursuppressors through the wringer in the field, actively tryingto get them to fail. Without much success, though—theweapon’s barrel just about always gives out first.

Manufacturing

Our suppressors are manufactured entirely on site, at ourstate-of-the-art facility in Southern California. We usecomputer-controlled equipment to obtain ex tremely tighttolerances not achievable with traditional lower-techmachining processes. And SureFire suppressors are madeentirely by SureFire employees at SureFire—notsubcontracted out to other machine shops or vendors, the way some other suppressor manufacturers do.

By building our suppressors on site, utilizing leanmanufacturing, and true one-piece flow, we know exactlywhere every suppressor we manufacture stands eachstep of the way. And if it isn’t up to our demandingstandards, at any point, we pull it. There's no "tweaking"it, even if it's good enough to get by, because it won't get past our quality control process.

So, how durable are SureFire suppressors? Durable en ough for us to put our money where our mouths are by offering a lifetime warranty on every SureFiresupp ressor we sell.

Tight tolerances, state-of-the-art machining, and redundant welding all contribute to makingSureFire suppressors marvels of engineering.

SolidThe Fast-Attach system locks the suppressor tightly andsecurely onto the firearm. It stays in place, eliminatingshot-to-shot vibration variations that can cause a loss of accuracy.

ConsistentA SureFire suppressor attaches to your firearm in the same position every time. Along with other attributesof our suppressors, this produces little or no shift in thefirearm's unsuppressed point of impact. Any minimal group shift that occurs will be consistent every time yougo suppressed—no guessing where your rounds will hit. If there's a better suppressor mounting system, it hasn'tbeen invented yet. But of course we're always trying.

SureFire Sound Suppressors24

SOUNDSUPPRESSOR SCIENCE

Suppressors 101A sound suppressor is essentially a metal tube with int erior chambers separated by metal walls called baffles.A passageway for the bullet runs through the baffles. While this fundamental design is inherent in all modernsupp r essors, there are many modifications that can drama -tically affect a suppressor’s sound-reduction capabilities.

Suppressors “suppress” sound primarily by confining, cooling, and extending the release time of firearm dis -charge gases, all of which occurs in a fraction of a second. The amount of sound attenuation from a suppr essor is not constant, either. Any given sound suppressor canproduce different results on any given day, depending onthe weapon used, the ammunition used, the temperatureof the suppressor—even local atmospheric conditions suchas barometric pressure, air temperature, and humidity.

It should be noted that sound reduction capability is not the only—nor necessarily the most crucial—factor insuppressor design. Other factors, such as how solidly andeasily the suppressor attaches to a firearm, weight, size, durability, the consistency and amount of shift in pointof impact, and how the suppressor affects a firearm’saccuracy, are also extremely important. And SureFire leads the way in all of these areas.

Page 28: Suppressor Catalog10

25

Sound PerceptionHuman perception of a gunshot depends on the sound’s intensity, duration, frequency distribution,

distance of the listener from the firearm, position of the listener with respect to the firearm, and the listener’s hearing abilities. And human ears are most sensitive to sound frequenciesof middle A and its higher harmonics (between 2 and 4 kHz). What this means is, if 10different suppressors were tested in front of 10 different people, you might wind upwith 10 different opinions as to which suppressor was the “quietest.”

Unit of Sound Measurement The standard unit of measurement of sound intensity, which humans perceive as loudness, is the “bel,” named for Alexander Graham Bell. However, for mostmeasurement purposes the bel is too large, so the decibel (1/10 of a bel) is more commonly used. The decibel scale is logarithmic, which means a smalldifference in measured value equates to a great difference in intensity. Forexample, a noise source measuring 70dB is 10 times louder than a sourcemeasuring 60dB and 100 times louder than a source measuring 50dB.

Measuring Suppressor EffectivenessThe measured results of a sound suppressor’s effectiveness in attenuatingthe sound of a firearm discharge can vary tremendously. They dependon the equipment used to measure the sound, the position of microphones, the environment in which sound is being measured (like hard surfaces versussound-absorbent surfaces), and other conditions previously menti oned, suchas atmospheric conditions.

SureFire takes great pains to ensure our measurements are standardized andas accurate as possible. Which is why we believe that blanket statements like“Our suppressor reduces a weapon’s sound signature by X decibels” are notaccurate. We’ll put our suppressors up against any other brand when it comes to noise attenuation. And when it comes to durability, accuracy, con sistency,

and convenience/solidity of attachment, SureFire is in a league of its own.

SureFire Sound Suppressors26

There are three types of SureFire adapters: muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and compensators. Each offers differentperformance characteristics. The exact SureFire adapter(s)available for your particular firearm depends on yourweapon’s caliber, make, and model.

A SureFire suppressor adapter does more than provide a mounting platform for your suppressor. It also serves as a stand-alone device that improves weaponperformance even when no suppressor is attached. There are three types of SureFire adapters available—muzzle brakes, flash hiders, and birdcage compensators. Each type contributes to your weapon’s performance in its own unique way.

The actual adapter model used depends on yourparticular weapon and suppressor choice. SureFireadapters can be installed on existing muzzle threads, with no permanent weapon modifications required.

SUPPRESSOR ADAPTERS

Even after thousands of rounds SureFire adapters still perform as rock-solid mounting platforms for our suppressors.

MUZZLE BRAKESSureFire muzzle brakes utilize our proprietary Impulse Diffusion design to significantlyreduce a weapon’s felt recoil and muzzle rise. Unlike most muzzle brakes, SureFire brakesalso diffuse and minimize muzzle blast, reducing concussion felt by the shooter and enablingbetter target concentration and faster follow-up shots.
