A Promise is Kept
Get Excited!
Below are the instructions for the warm-up activity – What Do You See?
Show students the image in Appendix A. Ask them to stare at the four black dots in the center of the
picture for about 15 seconds. Then they should close your eyes and keep them closed until an image
appears. Ask, “What did you see?” The answers will vary, but the image is a picture of a man. Ask a
follow up question to see if anyone can describe differences between the image they saw when their
eyes were open and the image they saw when their eyes were closed.
Scripture Summary
Some of Jesus disciples went to the tomb only to find it empty. Two angels appeared there telling them that Jesus was not there. He had risen from the dead just like he said and he was alive! Confused, they headed out to tell the other disciples what happened. Meanwhile, two of Jesus’ disciples were leaving Jerusalem, headed to a town called Emmaus, disappointed over Jesus’ death. Suddenly, Jesus appeared, walking alongside them but they did not recognize him. The men invited Jesus into their home where he shared scriptures about himself. The disciples finally realized it was Jesus after he broke bread with them.
Key Verse Exercise

Adventures of the Faithful Five – Episode 5: Hopeful Dinner
With the aroma of sweet potato pie and fried chicken, Israel could not stop his
stomach from growling. He joyfully waited every Sunday to eat dinner at his
grandmother's house. This Sunday was special. It was Resurrection
Sunday when Israel and his family, along with other believers, celebrate
Jesus rising from the dead.
Grandma was bringing in the last dish of vegetables to sit out on the table
when she noticed that Israel had his head bowed. “Israel, are you okay?” said
Grandma. “No ma’am,” Israel said with a disappointing tone. “I miss him a lot!

That was his special chair he would sit in every Sunday at this table. I miss him a lot!” Israel said as he
pointed to the high back chair at the end of the dinner table.
Grandma knew exactly what he meant and to whom he was referring. A year ago, Grandpa passed away.
Israel always looked forward to listening to Grandpa sing and tell stories over the dinner table, especially
the story about Jesus’ resurrection. Israel was sad because this Sunday Grandpa was not there to tell the
story. As other family members gathered around the table, Grandma looked at Israel and smiled,
“Grandson, I know you are sad that your Grandfather is no longer with us, but I want to remind you of
the story he would share if he was with us today.” Grandma began to share Grandpa’s story with the
family and then she concluded, “...and one day we will be raised from the dead to live with Christ
forever.”
As Israel lifted his head he noticed the letter “A” in his name written on the picture of him and his
grandfather sitting on the buffet table in the dining room. Suddenly, his super power kicked in. He is one
who prevails with God so he started to understand exactly what Grandma was saying. In a joyful tone
he exclaimed, “I get it! Jesus came to rescue our souls from sin so that we can live eternally with him.
Grandma, I always hoped to see Grandpa again, I never realized that through the resurrection I can now
see Jesus and Grandpa. He loved Jesus too!” As Israel rushed to his grandmother to give her a hug she
smiled and said, “...and that is the resurrection story.”
Rise Up!
Answers to questions in What Do You Think are underlined.
What did the two angels remind Jesus’ disciples at the tomb? Jesus arose like he said he would.
Why were the two disciples disappointed? They were disappointed over Jesus’ death.
Just like Jesus’ disciples, Israel was disappointed in the death of his grandfather. What hope gave the
disciples and Israel encouragement? We have eternal life.
Complete the Superhero Challenge if time permits.
Ask students to help the Faithful Five make children aware of Jesus in their lives by finishing the
statement “I know Jesus lives because…”. (Optional: Sing the hymn, “He Lives.” The lyrics are below.)
I serve a risen savior
He’s in the world today
I know that he is living, whatever men may say
I see his hand of mercy
I hear his voice of cheer
And just the time I need him, he’s always near
He lives! He lives!
Christ Jesus lives today
He walks with me and talks with me
Along life’s narrow way
He lives! He lives!
Salvation to impart
You ask me how I know he lives
He lives within my heart

Below are the instructions for the Time to Create activity – Make the empty tomb.
Materials needed: colored paper plates, brads, key verse word art, scissors, stapler
Instructions: Cut a plate in half. Then cut an "entrance" in one half of the plate. Cut out the two “word art” circles. Glue the large circle with the key verse to the back of the plate half without the entrance. Attach the small circle to the left edge of the entrance on the other plate half with a brad. Make sure you can roll the small circle back and forth to close and open the tomb. Staple halves together.
Close the lesson with prayer.
Lord, thank you for opening our eyes to see the beauty of your resurrection, new life in Christ Jesus.
Help us to always remember to have faith and hope that we can live in your Kingdom forever. In Jesus’
Name, we pray. Amen.

Below are the instructions for the warm-up activity – The Fish Net Relay.
Before class, print the fish pattern in Appendix C on various colored paper and cut them out. Make sure
you have at least 50 fish. Scatter the fish in batches around the classroom. Divide the children into
teams. Each team will need a fish net or basket to hold items. (You can purchase fish nets and baskets
for a reasonable price at Five Below.) Assign each team to a designated area. When you shout “Go!” the
team members will run to that area and fill their net with as many fish as they can in one minute. Have
each team count the fish they gathered.
Scripture Summary
Several of Jesus' disciples were gathered beside the Sea of Galilee. While fishing all night they caught
nothing. As the sun came up, Jesus was standing on the beach but they could not recognize who he was.
Jesus asked them did they catch any fish. “None,” the disciples replied. He told them to throw their nets
on the right side of the boat and they would catch some. After following Jesus instructions, they caught
so many fish they could not pull the net into the boat. Although the net was over filled, it did not break.
6 | P a g e
Jesus invited the disciples to eat breakfast with him and he served them fish and bread. This was the
third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection.
Key Verse Exercise
Read the verse to remember aloud.
“It is the Lord!” (John 21:7)
Tell students to create an SMS code for the verse to remember by using only the numbers on the phone keypad that correspond to the first letter in each word. Show this example as a helpful hint, The Lord has risen indeed = 85474. Explain “T” is the first letter in “the.” The letter T is on the number 8. Continue with the explanation for each letter until you feel the students understand the assignment.

Adventures of the Faithful Five – Episode 6: A Special Guest
The chatter in the room began as the Faithful Five shared with each other
their personal stories about Resurrection Sunday and how they celebrated
Jesus’ resurrection with their families. “Classity, Class!” their teacher said
calling the group to attention. “Yessity, Yes!” they exclaimed while quieting
their voices to hear her instructions. “Today, we are going to have a special
treat! I have waited all year for this day and tried my best not to share the
surprise. We have a special guest with us that has heard about all the
amazing things you have done to live like Jesus and love others. He wanted
to take a moment to come visit with you.” Leaning over in his seat, “I
wonder who it could be?” said Taj to Aaliyah. A few seconds later, there was
a knock at the door and in walks a tall dark man who they had all seen
before but only in pictures. Suddenly, all their letters lit up on their shirts
and their faces shone with complete joy except for Taj. “Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ!” said the man. “Greetings in his name!” said the Faithful Five and their teacher. This was
the first time they ever witnessed this man in person. “It can’t be! Can it be? Bishop Monroe!” said
Akeem as his stood up from his chair with amazement.
Smiling the man began to speak. “Yes Akeem. I am Bishop Monroe and I have heard such marvelous
works that you Faithful Five have done, through the power of Jesus Christ. I wanted to personally come
and thank you for being true disciples!” Bishop Monroe began to ask the Faithful Five to share a
moment where they each had the opportunity to use their powers through Jesus. When it was Taj’s turn
to speak he said, “Bishop, I don’t have moments like my other friends here. They have so many great
stories of helping others and representing Jesus. Sometimes I think the things I do aren’t very big at all.”
“Taj, let me share a bit of today’s lesson with you. Jesus’ disciples were on the sea fishing and that night
they didn’t catch anything. Jesus appeared on the shore that morning and told them to cast their net to
the right side and they would catch some, so they did. That day they caught 153 fish and even with the
large amount of fish they had, their net did not break. Jesus invited them to have breakfast with him on
the shore. He fed them fish and broke bread with them. This was Jesus’ third appearance with his
disciples and this time Jesus, who they loved so much, who they saw die on the cross, was now alive and
wanted to spend some time with them. Young man, you may not think that your works are as great as
your friends here but let me share something with you. Jesus telling the disciples to fish on the right side
of the boat was a symbol of them living in right relationship with God through Jesus. That meant that
they would follow the same life Jesus lived by following his directions and loving others, making God
very happy. When God gave you power through Jesus, he gave you something special and different than
the others. Your symbol is the Christian cross reminding others of the power, love, glory and honor
that belongs to God and the sacrifice Jesus made for us! You are exalted Taj!” exclaimed Bishop Monroe.
Suddenly the cross on Taj’s shirt began to glow and his face was filled with joy. He was reminded that
everything he had done was about showing others that Jesus is alive and that through Jesus’ power he
would do even more great things. Bishop Monroe concluded his time with the Faithful Five by giving

Scripture Summary
After sharing breakfast with the disciples on the shore of Galilee, Jesus turned to Peter and asked him if he loved Him. Peter responded by saying yes so Jesus told Peter to feed his lambs. Jesus asked Peter again if he loved Him. Peter responds by saying yes so Jesus told him to take care of his sheep. Jesus asked Peter a third time if he loved Him. Saddened by Jesus asking a third time, Peter answered Jesus by saying, “Lord, you know all things, you know I love you.” Jesus tells Peter again to feed his sheep. Jesus wasn’t talking about sheep in a field. He was referring to loving his people. Jesus told the disciples to follow him and showing their love for him by doing what he did - loving others.

Adventures of the Faithful Five – Episode 7: Love Like Jesus
Akeem was admiring what a beautiful day it was as the Faithful Five
passed the corner store heading to their Day of Service. It was their
day to serve others at the monthly luncheon held at the local
community center. Stumbling close to the group, a man held out a cup
and asked, “Young people, do you have any change to spare?” Walking
directly behind them were two other kids. “Old man! Find you
someone else to beg!” one yelled. This made Aaliyah upset, “Have
more respect!” she told the kids. The man returned to the place where
he was sitting and began to hold his head down.
As the Faithful Five arrived at the community center they were
assigned to serve cold drinks to all those in line. After serving most of
the people, Aaliyah noticed the man from outside sitting alone eating
his food. Looking to her left she also noticed the two kids that were
harsh to the man outside. Walking over to them she said, “Excuse me, do you see that gentlemen over
there. He is homeless and the only hot meal he gets that he doesn’t have to beg for is here every
month at the community center. You made him feel very low today. How would you feel if you didn’t
have your warm bed or your hot food to eat every day?” As soon as Aaliyah was done, she felt the
emblem on her suit light up! “When others go low, we go high,” feeling a voice in her heart speak. With
their smiles turning to frowns, one of the boys replied, “I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” Finishing up the
serving line the other Faithful Five members made their way over to where Aaliyah was standing.
“Aaliyah are you okay?” said Taj. “Yes, I am but our two friends here don’t look like they are,” she said.
“We are sorry about the way we treated him. What shall we do?” said one of the boys. “Feed his

boys. “No, Jesus told Peter to feed his sheep. He meant for us to make sure that we love people just like
he did.” The rest of the Faithful Five members began to shake their heads in agreement. “We don’t
know how to do that,” said one of boys. The Faithful Five made a prayer group with the two boys and
asked Jesus to show them how to love like he loved. After the prayer, both boys went to the man’s table
to ask him for forgiveness. “I forgive you,” said the man. One of the boys decided to ask for a takeout
plate so the man could have food for later. The Faithful Five were happy they had a chance to teach
someone how to follow Jesus’ example in loving and helping others.

While John was worshipping with God he had a vision where he could see the inside of God’s home. John saw sights of beauty that no man had ever seen before. The floor was like crystal seas and the throne was covered in rubies and precious jewels. The elders of the church were wearing crowns and bowing down at the feet of Jesus saying, “Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord Almighty who was, who is, and who is to come.” John said the elders were joined by creatures and all that was created by our great God sang God’s praises.

Adventures of the Faithful Five – Episode 8: Making Space
Aaliyah was on her way home after school. She had a full day of
activities and was extremely tired. She decided that it would be a good
idea to watch one of her favorite cartoon episodes on her way home so
she put her headphones in her ears and began to enjoy the theme
song for the show. She was singing along with the song when
suddenly she looked out of the window and saw a beautiful rainbow.
Immediately, Aaliyah was reminded that she had forgotten to spend
time with God for the day. Normally she would get up in the morning,
pray and thank God for her mom, dad and all of her friends but she was
rushing this morning after oversleeping and ran out the house so that
she wouldn't be late for school. Aaliyah paused her video on her tablet
and began to tell God how great he was and that she was sorry for
forgetting to tell him thank you this morning for waking her up and keeping her family safe throughout
the night. Aaliyah made a commitment to herself and to God that she would not forget to say thank
you again. The rainbow reminded her that she served a wonderful God that deserved her praises every
day.

power and man’s weakness. John began to cry because there was no one that could open this precious

Adventures of the Faithful Five – Episode 9: Create a New Song
The Faithful Five were attending choir rehearsal. The choir director opened the rehearsal with a prayer giving thanks to God for bringing all the kids to choir rehearsal safely. The prayer seemed to be longer than usual and some of the kids began to peek at the choir director. When
the kids caught a glimpse of the choir director’s face, they noticed
that tears were rolling down her cheeks as she continued to say thanks to God for all his many blessings. Some of the kids were starting to get concerned about the director because they thought she was crying because she was sad. Once the prayer concluded, Israel told the director he heard music in his head while she was praying. Instantly, Aaliyah shouted, “Hey, me too!” The director looked at them both with a confused look and said, “Well, tell me what the music sounded like?” Israel began to sing, “Worthy is the lamb.” Aaliyah responded, “To power and wealth and wisdom.” Suddenly Taj said, “Might and honor and glory and blessings”. All three just kept shouting these statements to one another until it became a
chant. The director quickly moved to the piano and created a melody for the chant and they began to
dance around in a circle singing, “Worthy is the lamb to receive power and wealth and wisdom, strength, might and honor and glory and blessings”. The other children joined in, having such a joyous time. The choir director got everyone’s attention so that she could tell them why she was crying during her prayer. She told the choir that while she was praying she was also asking God to put a song in their hearts. Every child in the room cheered, “Hooray!” God answered her prayer and they all continued to
rejoice and praise God the remainder of the rehearsal.
