2015 marks 100 years since the Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the shores of Gallipoli in the First World War. The Gallipoli campaign, and the greater war, had an effect on all Australian communities including Subiaco.

The effect on the Subiaco community was significant, with ten per cent of the total population enlisting for the war. Of those who travelled to serve, many never returned home to Subiaco.

The city, together with the Subiaco and Shenton Park sub-branches of the Returned Services League (RSL) will mark the centenary with a number of events being held in and around Subiaco.

Shenton Park RSL sub-branch ANZAC Day service

Marchers will assemble at the King Street intersection on Onslow Road at 6.45am. Community members are invited to join in the march to the Shenton Park Community Centre, 240 Onslow Road, Shenton Park, where the service will commence at 7am.

Subiaco RSL sub-branch ANZAC Day service

Marchers will fall in at the Subiaco Post Office at 7.45am. The march will proceed down Rokeby Road, ending at the Fallen

Soldiers Memorial, corner of Rokeby and Hamersley roads, where the ceremony will take place at 8am.

Following the service, community members are encouraged to visit Subiaco Museum’s current exhibition, When the Great War Came to Subiaco.

Museum exhibition – When the Great War came to Subiaco

Follow soldiers into the trenches, peer into the homes of Subiaco families and examine the behaviour of community organisations and the council, to gain a better understanding of the war’s effects on individuals, families, neighbourhoods and the broader community.

When the Great War came to Subiaco will be on display until August at Subiaco Museum, 239 Rokeby Road, Subiaco (next to Subiaco Library). Opening hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1pm to 4pm and Saturday from noon to 4pm.

Several other ANZAC themed events will be held in the Subiaco area throughout March and April. For details, please refer to the ‘What’s happening in Subi’ section of this newsletter, or visit the events calendar on the city’s website www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/events

Word on the streetLords Recreation Centre is back after a temporary closure last year. To celebrate, we asked the Lords community ‘What do you love about Lords?’

trevor – long time Lords member

“You can’t beat the atmosphere and the camaraderie, if you like, of Lords.”

Michael – works at Lords

“It’s a community based place where people come and want to talk and have a chat to us, and there’s always a good vibe. It’s a great place to work.”

Maribel – long time Lords member

“I absolutely love Lords – it’s pretty much my life. When I came here it was really what helped me get into the community, to know people.”

These responses and more feature in a short film titled ‘I love Lords’.

Last chance to enter the 2015 local History Awards The closing date for the 2015 Local History Awards is fast approaching. Don’t miss your chance to win up to $500 for researching a special aspect of Subiaco’s history and sharing it with the community.

Submissions may take the form of one or a combination of different formats including a research report, personal memoir, interview, and drawings or photographs of local places, people and events that tell the story of Subiaco’s past.

Redevelopment of one of the last remaining industrial lots in Subiaco, now known as the Carter Lane precinct, is on track for mid-year completion.

Its transformation will result in new public open space for the community to enjoy, eleven single residential lots, and two larger lots; one intended for medium density housing, and the other as a mixed use lot with commercial uses on the ground floor and residential above.

The public open space component will complement the existing ‘greenspine’, and will include a lawn area, pedestrian path, cycle ways, water features, public art, seating, lighting and barbeque facilities.

The city has been working on redevelopment of the 12 000 square metre site since 2011, when the former tenant Bosich Holdings vacated. The city would like to thank the community for their input throughout the process.

In recent weeks, a major milestone in the project was achieved with the finalisation of the sale of the two larger sites. Auctioning of the eleven residential lots is expected to take place in April or May this year. To register your interest, please contact the City of Subiaco on 9237 9222 or [email protected]

Funding for river foreshore planningThe city, together with the Western Suburbs Regional Organisation of Councils (WESROC) has received $40 000 under the Swan River Trust’s 2014/15 Riverbank Funding Program. The funding will be used to assess the vulnerability of the foreshore in light of a changing climate, and produce a regional Foreshore Management Plan for the Swan River Estuary in the western suburbs of Perth.

Over the past fifteen years, the city owned land at JH Abrahams Reserve in Crawley has seen problems with river wall collapse, damage to the adjacent pedestrian footpath, and erosion scours in the river bed near the stormwater outlet pipes. Surrounding western suburbs local governments are experiencing similar problems with structural damage to river walls and cliffs, and the impact of erosion on vegetation and community facilities.

The study will identify short and long-term solutions tailored to each local government area, and provide vital information to allow cost-effective planning for the future.
