The city is bringing a brand new event series to Subiaco this December. Spanning across sixteen days from Friday 5 December to Saturday 20 December, ’16 days of Subi’ is a jam-packed, fun filled program of over forty events, at various locations throughout the Subiaco Town Centre and surrounds.

Special events such as the FIGJAM Food Fest and the Shop til you drop in Subiaco shopping event will delight, while roaming musicians, street performers and public art installations will inject colour and vibrancy into Subiaco streets.

16 days of Subi aims to increase activity throughout the city, attracting visitors, workers and local residents to spend time in Subiaco, shopping, dining and enjoying all that the city has to offer.

The series will kick off with the Subi Workers Lunch and the launch of the Recharge Scheme in Subiaco on Friday 5 December. For the full calendar of events, head to www.visitsubiaco.com.au

The city’s Heritage Grants Fund was set up to provide financial assistance to property owners who are committed to the retention and enhancement of Subiaco’s built heritage. Applicants are

entitled to claim 50 per cent of the total cost of the works, to a maximum of $5000.

International volunteer Day pop-up café and stallThe City of Subiaco invites all community members to find out about volunteering in Subiaco at an International Volunteer Day pop-up café and stall on Friday 5 December.

From 11.30am to 1.30pm, in the Park Street laneway space between the Subiaco Post Office and Brew-ha Café, there will be prizes and freebies up for grabs, including a raffle and free artisan-style ice popsicles.

International volunteer Day is celebrated each year on 5 December. The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985 and celebrates volunteer contributions to economic and social development at local, national and international levels.

In 2010, 6.1 million Australians aged over eighteen years participated in voluntary work in areas such as sport and physical recreation, community welfare, and religious groups, parenting and children and youth.

The city values the contribution volunteers make to the community. Our volunteers help deliver services in a diverse range of areas from Meals on Wheels and youth ambassador programs, to tree planting and walking groups.

For volunteering enquiries contact the city on 9237 9325.

Scoot on down to the recharge Scheme launch The City of Subiaco is the first Western Australian local government to implement the Recharge Scheme, an initiative for electronic mobility devices that is growing nationwide. You are invited to help celebrate at the official launch.

The ‘Recharge Scheme’ is a program where users of electronic mobility devices such as scooters and electronic wheelchairs, have the option of charging their transportation for a short period, to extend the battery life while out and about in the community. Dôme Café is a recognised ‘Recharge Point’ in the City of Subiaco.

For more information about this program, including information on becoming a ‘Recharge Point’, visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/rechargescheme or contact the city on 9237 9231.

Be prepared for fire seasonSummer is fast approaching and the hotter temperatures mean an increased risk of fires starting on your property, a neighbouring property or public places such as Kings Park.

To protect your home and garden:• cut long grass and dense scrub• remove leaf litter and twigs from under trees• prune lower tree branches (up to two metres

off the ground) to stop a ground fire spreading into the canopy of trees

• keep roof gutters clear of leaves and bark• remove shrubs and small trees under and

between larger trees.

If you detect fire or smoke, call emergency services on 000.

For more information about protecting your home and family against fire, visit the Department of Fire and emergency Services’ website www.dfes.wa.gov.au

Greening the Subiaco rail reserveThe city has commenced a new project to revegetate a 400 metre section of the Fremantle rail reserve in Subiaco.

The site is currently being prepared by removing annual and woody weeds in the rail reserve adjacent to the dual-use path, between Hamilton Street and Thomas Road, Subiaco. Next winter, the area will be mulched and 1700 local native species planted. The project aims to create an attractive and shady landscape for those travelling through, and provide habitat for local wildlife.

The project complements more than ten years of revegetation works in the Daglish section of the rail reserve, where a total of 25 000 local native species have been planted by community members. The rail reserve is an important regional greenway that connects areas of bushland, wetlands and open space and helps maintain healthy ecological processes.
