West Leederville station underpass mural project

Felted vessel workshop

The underpass at West Leederville train station recently received a makeover with international street artists Gaia from New York and Ever from Argentina lending their unique artistic talents to revamp the 115 square metre space.

The artists completed the mural as part of the Works for Walls project – a collaboration between the City of Subiaco, Public Transport Authority (PTA) and FORM.

The underpass is one of thirty walls that were transformed across Perth as part FORM’s Art in the City project titled PUBLIC, which brought forty-five of some of the world’s best known urban artists to Western Australia.

The artists were inspired by Subiaco’s connection with the Benedictine monks who founded Subiaco.

Herman and Rosie musical adaptation Kaleidoscope ensemble’s musical adaptation of Australian author/illustrator gus gordon’s award winning picture book, Herman and Rosie, is coming to Subiaco Arts Centre, 180 Hamersley Road, Subiaco from Wednesday 9 to Saturday 12 July at various times. Tickets are $20 per person and the show is suitable for all ages.

The charming and timeless story of loneliness and belonging in a big city is brought to life by a storyteller and a seven-piece jazz combo featuring Perth’s leading jazz vocalist, Libby Hammer playing music, mainly from the 40s and 50s.

For more information visit www.subiacoartscentre.com.au

CompetitionThe City of Subiaco is proud to support this production of Herman and Rosie through a Community Development grant. For your chance to win one of two family passes for four people to attend the above show email [email protected] by 5pm on Wednesday 2 July.

The city, in conjunction with Perth Upmarket, is running a free felted vessel workshop using beautiful merino wool. Come and learn to lay down wool fleece over a plastic resist template to make a pure wool masterpiece.

Building certification expertise at your serviceThe city has a team of qualified building surveying professionals with extensive experience in all aspects of building, design construction, certification and inspections on projects of any scale and complexity, residential or commercial.

The team can provide a full range of building surveying services including preliminary building regulatory advice, and can supply advice through the entire building process from conceptual design to final completion for a minimal fee.

Whether you are thinking of making improvements such as a renovation or addition, or planning a new development, it is important to advise the city of your plans as most projects of this nature require approvals.

Please contact the city’s building services team on 9237 9254 or [email protected] to discuss your proposal.

Come on down, it’s play time at Cliff Sadlier ReserveCliff Sadlier Reserve, located between Woolnough and Roberta streets in Daglish, will soon have a brand new play space. The playground will feature different areas, each providing a unique play experience.

These include:•aninteractiveareawithacubby

structure, talking tubes, orbs and a sand wheel

•aropegymstructure•atornadoswing.

The pre-existing double swing will be relocated to the new play space.

The design incorporates a selection of elements that were identified through community feedback and caters to a wide range of age groups, from toddlers to teenagers.

The City of Subiaco is proud to announce that at its May council meeting the new Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan was adopted. This plan represents a fresh commitment by the city to the safety of residents and visitors, opening the door to a range of innovations.

One of the main focus areas of the new report looks at alcohol-related harm, particularly among young people. In the last year the city launched the Pitstop event series which aims at reducing alcohol consumption and displacing alcohol-related antisocial behaviour through educating young people on safe use of drugs and alcohol.

How to run effective meetingsRunning an effective meeting is key to a thriving organisation or community group.

The city is offering a free short course facilitated by Western Australian Council of Social Service who will provide an introduction to governance and an overview of the roles and responsibilities of

committee members, an introduction to legal obligations, and tips for preparing, running and recording effective meetings.

Launch of the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan 2014–2016

The city has developed a partnership with the Red Cross’ Save-A-Mate program and is working to promote the message ‘you don’t have to drink to have fun’.

The city will also be working to improve key safety priorities such as lighting, graffiti removal and crime prevention through environmental design.

In 2012–13 there was a significant reduction in the incidences of most crimes in the city, especially assaults and burglaries. The city believes a push in community education programs, focus on alcohol-related harm, improved lighting and close partnership with the police were vital to this decrease.

Community input is very important so if you have an idea that could improve your safety, be it a women’s self defence workshop, a light that needs repairing or anything in between, please contact us. To make a suggestion, call the city on 9237 9222, or email [email protected]
