Supporting local businesses to remain competitive in an ever-changing environment and encouraging the attraction and retention of businesses to Subiaco will be a key focus for the city in 2015.

Late last year, council endorsed a revised funding model for town centre marketing activities. The changes include a reduction in the specified area rate (SAR) by 30 per cent in 2015/16 and a phasing out of the SAR by 2016/17.

The specified area rate is an extra rate that has been levied on properties in the town centre to fund marketing and promotion in the area since 1998.

The rate was initially reduced by 30 per cent for the 2014/15 financial year, and the further reductions in the rate and its eventual phasing out reflect a decision made by council to bring town centre marketing and economic development activities in-house.

The City of Subiaco is preparing for a merger with the Town of Cambridge to form the ‘new’ City of Subiaco.

The changes take effect on 1 July 2015, as detailed in Governor’s Orders published on 24 December 2014. The ‘new’ Subiaco will incorporate the Town of Cambridge, the current City of Subiaco north of Aberdare Road and parts of the cities of Stirling and Nedlands into an enlarged local government.

The State Government intends to introduce legislation to enable an enlarged City of Perth, including the City of Vincent, uWA and QeII Medical Centre, and this may include the parts

of Nedlands and Crawley south of Aberdare Road. The other western suburbs local governments are proposed to be amalgamated into the ‘City of Riversea’.

The City of Subiaco and Town of Cambridge have formed a Local Implementation Committee to guide the merger process, and are working closely to bring the best of both communities together.

Word on the streetWe hit the streets to ask, ‘What do you love about shopping in Subiaco?’

Marilyn and Margot – both work in Subiaco“We’ve both worked in Subiaco for the past twenty years. At the moment we drive down from where we work. We shop mainly for homewares like cushions, ornaments and vases. Sometimes we come in on the weekends. We shop at Farmer Jacks – it’s the best supermarket.”

Angela – lives elsewhere but owns a flat in Subiaco where she regularly stays“I usually shop at Weekends and Hobbs. It’s convenient and close to my flat.”

Sam – lives in Subiaco“I shop at Jacksons, Subiaco Bookshop and Sports Fever. I shop here every week, mainly for groceries but also for coffee.”

2015 Perth International Arts Festival comes to Subiaco The City of Subiaco is a proud supporter of the 2015 Perth International Arts Festival. you’re invited to take part in a number of festival events in and around Subiaco.

Don’t miss the highly anticipated Subiaco pARk at Theatre Gardens off Bagot Road. This sculpture park with a difference uses augmented reality (AR) technology to explore new ways of experiencing and thinking about public art. Bring your future posties along to The Future Postal Service for a high-energy, big-thinking mail delivery game. Taking place on Saturday 21 February on Rokeby Road and Sunday 22 February at the Perth Writers Festival Family Day at The university of Western Australia, children will move through a series of stations; thinking, drawing, writing and delivery training, before they put on an official blue hat and deliver a postcard as a random act of kindness to a person walking by.

The city is also delighted that local children’s theatre company Barking Gecko will be playing to sold out audiences at the world premiere of the Perth Festival commissioned The Rabbits. Barking Gecko Theatre Company and Opera Australia’s co-production of the compelling picture book written by John Marsden and illustrated by Shaun Tan (patron of the city’s Shaun Tan Award for young Artists), in association with West Australian Opera, will no doubt achieve high accolades.

Other events happening in and around Subiaco include sold out performances of Beyond at The Regal Theatre and a variety of offerings at The university of Western Australia, including the Lotterywest Festival Films and the Perth Writers Festival.

Subiaco supports a wealth of wildlifeThe City of Subiaco is fortunate to support a diverse range of wildlife within an urban area for everyone to experience and enjoy.

More than seventy native mammal, bird, amphibian and reptile species have been recorded in the Subiaco area, with additional species being identified as new research and monitoring is undertaken. Wildlife habitat is provided by the significant volume of vegetation in the area, including street trees, parks, green corridors, private gardens, wetlands and fragments of remnant bushland.

The city plays a key role in ensuring local habitat areas are closely linked, accessible and capable of supporting native fauna associated with the region. The city’s new Wildlife Enhancement Plan 2014–2019 details a number of actions to be undertaken by the city to enhance wildlife conservation and address risks such as climate change, feral and domestic animals, and plant disease.

Learn more about local wildlife and the city’s initiatives by downloading the Wildlife Enhancement Plan 2014–2019 from the city’s website www.subiaco.wa.gov.au or visit Subiaco Library to view the plan in hard copy form.

bulk rubbish collectionThe city’s next bulk rubbish collection is from Monday 2 to Friday 6 March. Rubbish should be placed on the street verge adjacent to your property between Saturday 28 February and Sunday 1 March.

The city will remove old furniture, timber, stoves, gas bottles, refrigerators (please remove doors for safety), steel and metal items, electrical and electronic appliances, mattresses and general junk. The city will not remove bricks, builder’s rubble, sands or cement, foodstuffs or household rubbish, motor vehicles or motor vehicle parts, tyres, paint, oil, flammable liquids, asbestos products or other hazardous materials. Residential prunings are not collected with bulk rubbish, however, you can call 9387 0999 to organise collection of household green waste.

Rubbish should be kept clear of your sprinkler system and the footpath, and it is requested that all metal, steel (including gas cylinders), white goods and electrical goods are separated from your general rubbish so they can be recycled. Items should be no longer than 1.5 metres.
