Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been great to see the enthusiastic way students have started back in term 4 with programs such as community access, work experience, Bounce, Zumba and Music Engagement as part of their regular schedule each week. We are looking forward to our senior camp, which is coming up next week where students and staff will head off to The Great Aussie Bush Camp in Kincumber for 3 days. Keep an eye out in upcoming newsletters for some photos from the camp.

On Monday this week, we had our regular Parent Social Club morning tea at Coco Cubano in Rouse Hill Town Centre. It was great to have a group of parents meet up for a chat and a coffee and to share their experiences and talk about what their child is doing both in and out of school. Usually there is only a small number of parents who attend these social club gatherings and it would be great to see a bigger group for our final morning tea for the year, which is scheduled for Thursday 29th November, 10.30am at Coco Cubano. Please put this date and time in your diaries now and come along on the day for a catch up.

Some important remindersAssisted student transportThis program provides travel to and from school at no cost to parents provided they meet the specified requirements. If your child already travels to and/or from school on assisted student

transport and your circumstances or address have changed for 2019, please contact Deb Swinton (Deputy Principal) on 9836 3810 to discuss the change. A variation will need to be submitted as soon as possible to ensure the changes are in place for the beginning of the new school year.

including an alternative contact – such as a relative or neighbour – who the school can call should you be unavailable. It is appreciated if you can keep a full change of labelled clothes for your child in their school bag, in case of accidents or illness. The school does have a small selection of spare clothes and if your child is sent home in school clothes we would ask you to clean them and return them as soon as possible.

If your child is sick at homeFrom time to time your child may get sick and display any number of symptoms that means it’s best to keep your child away from school and see your doctor.

Some of these symptoms include:* fever of 38ºC or above * severe cold or flu symptoms* vomiting or diarrhoea * rashes of an unknown origin

Your child must be kept at home for 24 hours after the last incident of vomiting or diarrhoea as per Department of Health guidelines.

If your child sustains a bump to the head such as from a fall or seizure, a doctor should check them as soon as possible and Department of Health guidelines recommend that they should be closely monitored for 24 hours in case of concussion.

Sun safetyAs the weather begins to warm up and summer approaches, it is important for all of us to be sun safe. We are encouraging all students to wear hats when out in the playground. Please ensure there is a named hat in your child’s school bag. Please apply sunscreen to your child before school and send some to school if you would like your child to have sunscreen applied during the school day. In extreme weather; excessive heat, rain and extreme cold, students will remain inside or under the covered areas.

R F F NEWS

It has been a great start to term four with students returning refreshed after the Spring holiday break. Smiling faces have indicated they are glad to be “back in the old routine”.

Every morning in Assembly everyone focuses on the National Anthem with a number of students joining in the singing and signing of the lyrics.

The willingness of each student to give his or her best in classroom activities such as reading, maths, science and gardening is very pleasing to see and they, in turn, feel a sense of pride as they are rewarded with Positive Behaviour for Learning tokens.

LIBRARYDuring library lessons in Term 4 Junior and Primary students will be covering the theme of “The Gruffalo” based around the famous books by Julia Donaldson. We aim to end the year with a lot of fun and laughter as the Gruffalo monster tries to ‘scare’ everyone with his ‘terrible tusks and his terrible claws and his terrible teeth in his terrible jaws’. Sounds entertaining!

High School students will be covering the theme of “Growing and Changing – Adolescence & Puberty”. The lessons teach important information that everybody needs to know and we are very fortunate at Tallowood to have access to high quality educational resources. All in all, we have had a great year in the Library. I am proud of the way our students responded to the stories from around the world and how they enjoyed joining in and celebrating the heritage and cultural backgrounds of the families and staff that make up our Tallowood school community. Students have steered a gondola through the canals of Venice; carried water from the river in India; re-enacted an ancient Chinese Legend “The Dragon & The Phoenix”; dressed up in all the colours of the rainbow as they pretended to be birds from a famous Aboriginal Legend “How The Birds Got Their Colours”; waltzed around the library to the verses of “Waltzing Matilda”. And that’s just a few of the countries we visited.

CLASS 7 & 8

During our science program in term 3, Class 7 and 8 students have participated in a variety of activities involving the human body. They did hands-on experiment on how the digestive system works and learnt about healthy and unhealthy food items. The students were able to recognise things that make them unique starting with the study of cells and DNA through edible sensory projects. Through the aids of their individual genes workbook and inventory of traits survey, we tallied the group information and came up with Class 7/8 most observable traits.
