From the Organ Bench

Organ music for the first Sunday of Advent includes the following:

The Opening Voluntary, the Lutheran chorale Wachet auf, ruft uns dieStimme appears in our hymnal translated as " 'Sleepers, Wake!' A VoiceAstounds Us." (#349) The text is an exposition on the story of the wise andfoolish bridesmaids as found in Matthew. J. S. Bach created a cantatabased on this chorale in 1731. Sometime around 1747, Bach made astraightforward transcription for organ of the cantata's fourth movement andpublished it along with five other similar transcriptions (known as theSchübler Chorales); it remains one of his most popular organ works. Theoriginal cantata movement was in three parts: a bass line (that would have

been harmonized as well), an ornamented solo line for unison violins and violas, and the choralemelody sung slowly by the choir tenors. Bach simply assigned the two melody lines to the hands ondifferent sounds, and the bass line to the pedals. Philipp Nicolai, who created the source text andtune in 1599, was pastor in a German community devastated by the plague. The hopeful nature ofthe text is remarkable, and Bach's setting seems to imply a patience on the part of the believer inanticipation of a new day when Christ comes again.

The Closing Voluntary comes from the Reformation Symphony composed in 2016 by DanielGawthrop. I played a portion of the Symphony's finale, based on "A Mighty Fortress," on ReformationSunday. Today's voluntary, the symphony's opening movement, is based on a four phrase AdventChorale (with a German text by Martin Luther), Nun Komm, Der Heiden Heiland, or, as translated mostoften, "Savior of the Nations, Come," #102 in our hymnal. The piece begins with a fanfare in a majorkey. Each phrase of the chorale (which is in a minor key) appears in the second section, in betweenan embellished melody over staccato left hand and pedal lines. The fanfare follows again, and afterthe tune is played in its entirety and without interruption, the fanfare is played for the final time.
