Volume 1 Issue 8 Serving the Inland Empire December 2010 Visit www.YesWeCanNewspaper.com By Sheri Stuart Riverside, CA In just a few days, the official start of the holiday shopping season will be in full swing. Springboard Nonprofit Consumer Credit Management is providing consumers with creative money saving tips that will help them keep more of their hard earned money in their pocket. The recommendations reflect Springboard’s mission to provide and promote financial literacy for all consumers. Melinda Opperman, Springboard’s senior vice president of community outreach and industry relations advises, “By following our tips you’ll avoid starting the new year with new debt and the accompanying guilt about how much you spent.” Opperman offers the following tips for shoppers who are feeling the giftgiving pinch this season: Create a budget and a list for holiday spending and gift giving in advance of buying. Include possible gifts, dollar amounts, and alternative choices. Don’t forget expenses like holiday decorations, wrapping paper, cards and postage, plus extra food costs for parties and family gatherings. Knowing how much you can truly afford to spend is a crucial first step in controlling costs. Establish spending limits for gifts for each person on your list and start looking for bargains early. Stick to your list and spending limits to avoid overspending. If it has been a challenging year financially, you may need to shrink your holiday gift list. Begin by talking with those you exchange gifts with, perhaps suggesting not exchanging gifts or mutually observing much lower dollar limits on gifts. Separate shopping trips (when comparing prices, quality, value, etc.) from spending trips (when making a purchase), and resist taking cash, credit cards, or a checkbook on the shopping trips. Pay with cash and avoid using credit cards. Charge cards tend to encourage indiscriminate spending. Credit card users often say they had no idea how much they spent on the holidays until the credit card bills arrive in January or February. Plan ahead – shop yearround and make a “gift drawer” or box with all your preholiday presents inside. Don’t forget to make a list (or note your envelope where you keep your gift receipts) of who gets what so you can keep track of what you’ve already bought. Wait for those sales! Watch the advertising and sale flyers for items you intend to buy. Liquidators, buying clubs, and factory outlet stores usually offer lower prices. Bulk buying with other family members or friends can also yield savings. Shop at offpeak times such as early morning or midweek to avoid crows and pressure. Do it online. Online auctions such as eBay are great places to find bargains, but be aware of how much similar items cost at retail. Many retailers have clearance sections on their shopping sites where you can save big. Make more of your gifts at home. Handmade craft items, special desserts or breads and other “goodies” can help stretch a holiday budget. While gift cards have become increasingly popular over the years, retail experts advise consumers to be cautious when giving gift cards from a struggling retailer. Under California law, bankrupt companies that are still doing business must honor gift cards. Retail experts advise thatif consumers do receive gift cards this season, to use them right away. Throughout the nation, Springboard offers assistance with money and credit management through educational programs and confidential credit counseling in both English and Spanish. Springboard offers various financial literacy workshops, including Surviving the Holidays, where consumers learn how to prepare costs associated with the holidays, manage holiday spending and begin the New Year without holiday debt. "From tomorrow we cut thecosts by X%" is an order that Idecided to compare a surgeonwho, seeing a patient suffering, decided to cut a little bit of eachorgan. Globally most companieshave cut costs, but, unfortunately, longtermoutcome is not very optimistic.Recent studies show that over90% of attempts to cut costs atthe beginning of the financialcrisis so far have failed to provesustainability. The reasons for somany failures recorded areextremely simple. Most times, decision makers failto exercise enough to see theirbusiness processes, focusing oncompetition at the expense ofreaction after its analysis of costsat both operational andadministrative. In other cases, they try to achieve targetsthrough stringent measures that

may prove unrealistic longterm, without distinction betweenmeasures to destroy those thatadd value. Finally, decisionmakers using incorrect orincomplete data to track costs, thus losing importantopportunities and empowermentefforts fail in the programs inplace. Continuing thecomparison with the surgeon'stask, remember that its purposeis not the operation itself, but toimprove the health of the patientlong term. To go beyond theintensive care patient and calllegs, should take into accountseveral basic treatments. "What"before "how."Benchmarks matter. Theexternal can be difficult to obtain especially in turbulenteconomic times but mostly wehave internal benchmarks thatwe can use and thus we consider

that the most effective costcutting. A classic example isgiven but generally valid travelexpenses comparison betweendifferent departments. Suchinternal benchmarks can identifyboth actual differences and notacquisitions as the company'soverall strategy and provides afirst step correction efficiencywithout affecting the operationalstructure. Anyone can say "how"to be cut. The difference betweensuccess and failure is given butthe answer to "how." Strategy lord of the lancet. The differencebetween amputation andrehabilitation is in the surgeon'sstrategy. So it is for companies:can amputate part of anorganization by cutting costswithout a calculated effect or youcan restore or even improve theperformance in anticipation ofdesirable outcomes. Many

decision makers do not makethat correlation and thereforeuniform reduction targets are setfor all departments, which candestroy the performance theyneed to increase generatinginvestments instead bringingimprovements to poor bad units.Map is not territory.Aggregated financialstatements generalize reality andtherefore its distortion mayoccur. Even if the first momentsof a crisis of profit and lossaccount can be an indicativemap, long term we need a finergranularity of financialinformation. For example, changes in the organization(either organic or as a result of anacquisition) or inconsistentaccounting practices betweenregions are elements that make aprofit and loss decision toolinadequate. Without a more

detailed business decisions mayhave undesirable effects. Expandthe time horizon. A key elementin all of the above is adopted toreduce costs as longtermstrategy. Because of costmanagement programs to beeffective, goals should be 23years, targeted shorttermsolutions, such as 12 months, wasonly temporary and reversibleeffect. The responsibility of asurgeon is to make the bestdecisions for the benefit of hispatient. It's easy to blame failureon circumstances, especiallyunder current economicconditions, but is a proof ofresponsibility to anticipate theeffects of our own actions andlearn from the mistakes of thosewho have done similaroperations.

Why companies fail when trying to reduce costs

By Ethel MartinMillerFirst, the birth of Jesus is Christmas Cheer to me personally. What a wonderful time of the year to reflect on the one who wasborn just for me. Thank you Lord for all the many blessingsthat you have restored upon me and my family. Second, what a wonderful time of the year to show our family andfriends and even strangers a little love and encouragement. This is the time of year that we can give to someone becausethey are special and/or someone whom we noticed as we go towork, the super market or just around the corner. Someonewhom might need to be cheered up. It would really be nice, ifwe would wrap up a little cheer, could be cookies, cards, thingwe made lets just look around and be created and take themaround with us in hopes to give Christmas Cheer to someone. We all know that there are many individuals very sad andfeeling alone through the holidays each year. I think we can putsome smiles on many faces if we just reach out. Helping andgiving to others will also make us feel pretty cool. Third, letsnot forget about self. We’re approaching the new year 2011.Many of us make all kinds of promises, goals and beat ourselvesup when we drop the ball. Lets not beat ourselves up this time, lets just start over and keep trying because in making suchpromises and setting goals we can’t control what life mightbring us in the course of our journey so just keep trying. 2011will be different, it will be the year to keep trying and not givingup on ourselves.Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

By Carole MartinYour heart is beating faster thanusual, your hands feel clammy, your mouth is so dry it feels likeyou have cotton inside – and yoursupposed to feel confident. Areyou going to an interview or atorture session? The answer is –"it's all in your perspective."Ideally you would sit poisedthumbing through a magazine, feeling relaxed as you wait yourturn to have a conversation withthe interviewer for the company.Think about it what do you haveto lose here? What's the worstthing that can happen? What ifyou don't get this job is theworld going to stop turning? Irealize of course, that bills mustbe paid, but you are taking thewrong approach if you are goingto come across as desperate –"Please, please, hire me."Interviewers smell fear.A change in thinkingThe first, and most importantstep is to change the way that youview the interview. This is not an

appointment with the dentistwho may inflict pain. It is aconversation with anotherperson. What is the worst thingthat can happen as a result of theinterview? You won't get the job, which may not have been theright job for you anyway.Secondly, this is a conversation a twoway process. You will beinterviewing them as much asthey are interviewing you. Isthere a good fit here – both ways? What looks good on paper maynot be what it appears – foreither party. It will be part ofyour job during the interview toinvestigate whether this a goodplace for you, and whether youwant to invest a significant partof your life here. When you arenot checking them out and whatthey have to offer you are missingan opportunity that you mayregret later.Calming techniquesOne of the best techniques tohandle stress is throughbreathing. Take deliberate, shallow breaths. Take air in

through the nostrils and exhalequietly through your mouth. Thisis a technique that should bepracticed as a relaxationtechnique before the interview sothat your body gets used toslowing down the breathingprocess and relaxing.Relaxation techniques such asyoga, and meditation classes, arerecommended for anyone whohas an extreme case of "interviewfright." The interview can causepanic attacks if the fear is strongenough. Preconditioning will dowonders for this type of anxiety.Preparation before the interviewThese are competitive times andyou should steel yourself toexpect some rejection. Thinkabout it this way, "Did you get amarriage proposal after everydate?" Well, you probably aren'tgoing to get a job offer after everyinterview. For every job you apply for thereare more than likely three to fourequally qualified candidates inline for the same job. Whetheryou stand out from "the crowd"

will depend on your preparationand ability to show confidence inyourself – believing that you arethe "best candidate for this job."How can you possibly sell anyoneanything if you don't believe in ityourself?Preparation will make you feelmore confident and less anxious. Can you imagine giving aperformance without somepractice and preparation?"Winging" the interview intoday's market is a big mistake.Fear of RejectionYou may have had a number ofinterviews with no offer. You maybe feeling defeated, and it'sbeginning to affect yourselfesteem. This would be true of anyone. Butit is a mistake to take itpersonally. There are so manyfactors that could be affecting theoffer that it is impossible to saywhat is happening. There may beinternal candidates, relativespromised jobs, a competitor whois a perfect match for the job, a

lack of chemistry between youand the new boss, a mismatch insalary needs, etc., etc.Let it goGive yourself credit for getting aninterview – only a smallpercentage of people get this farin the process. Give yourselfcredit for going out there andputting yourself on the line, eventhough it is painful for you. Giveyourself permission to not get joboffers. Believe that an offer willcome through when it is the rightoffer – the right fit for thecompany and for you. Take thecontrol back and reject thefeeling of fear. When you have done everythingto prepare for the interview, andyou are satisfied that you canpresent yourself in the best lightpossible, the next step is for youto let it go. You can learnsomething from each interview.Learn to enjoy meeting newpeople and having newexperiences. Who knows you mayeven grow to like interviewing.

By Criss WhiteIn the Christiancommunity, baptism is one of theHoly Sacraments that each personhas to go through. Months afterthe birth of the child, this simpleritual (which is usually celebratedwith a whole or half daycelebration) is held inside thechurch where the child is given hisor her name. One of the majorsymbols is when the priest poursholy water on the forehead of thechild.More than a namegiving ritual, baptism has far more importanceand significance in the life of aChristian. While many peopleparticipate in this solemnceremony, some people do not

know the full meaning of it. Hereare some key reasons why a childhas to be baptized. The pouring of the wateronto the child's foreheadsymbolizes the association of thechild to the Father, the Son, andthe Holy Spirit. In Colossians 2, itmentioned that baptism was away to be united with Christ. While everyone is born sinful, baptism allows a person to beborn anew and this time withoutsin, as Christ is with himthroughout the whole baptismalprocess. In baptism, thegodmothers, godfathers, parents, and other witnesses, pledge onbehalf of the child, to turn away

from sin, and cling always toChrist. Baptism shows thecommunity that this child, thatthis person, is a Christian, denouncing all works of evil, andis a public proclamation of his orher faith. Baptism allows not just thechild, but everyone who iswitnessing the event, topronounce their belief in thedeath, resurrection, and cleansingof God's children from sin. It is avisual reminder that everyone diesin sin, but can be resurrected andcleansed from sin only throughGod. This shows that the familyacknowledges that even Christhimself was baptized, not to be

freed from sin, but to rejoin Godanew. Baptism shows we honorGod and we acknowledge Hispower to overcome sin for us. It shows we believe thatthrough the faith that we willdemonstrate in this ritual. Thisfaith will enable us to joineveryone, and Christ, in theChristian community. Baptism is being done tobabies, as this means that thejourney of spiritual growth startsfrom our childhood years and notlater in life. This also means acceptanceof the Holy Spirit, making it easierfor the believer to follow Christ asthe Holy Spirit that is not insidehim will serve as a guide.

Baptism is a holy sacrament andevery aspect of it should berevered and honored. Just asChrist himself humblysurrendered to this sacrament, soshould His children who want tofollow His teachings and His life.A reception is also normally doneafter a baptism becauseconsidering the effect or impactthis has on the child's life, thebaptism indeed calls for acelebration. A complete partyfrom the invitation to the favors, abaptism is generally a half daycelebration from the ceremony tothe baptism party.

The Importance and Meaning of Baptism

By Ronke ImmanuelOur life is our manner of living, vigour and liveliness; and our heart isthe centre of emotions. The Word of God tells us in Proverbs 4:23,"Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Theissues of life come out of the heart and influence everything else in yourlife. The heart is the place where true success originates and wherecharacter is formed. All types of thoughts start from the heart and that is why God tells us toguard our heart with all diligence. The type of thoughts that originatesfrom your heart shapes your life.In effect, you are in the "driving seat"of your life. But the Holy Spirit can help you in this "driving seat" sothat you can obtain good results, which will bring glory to God.We need to keep our heart with all vigilance and make sure that ourthoughts are pure. Evil or negative thoughts do not do any justice toyour life. God's Word says, "For as a man thinks in his heart, so is he."Proverbs 23:7. You see, you become whatever you think in your heart, whether good or bad. You are the product of your thoughts; hence youneed to take captive of every thought and cast down every imagination. The bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 10:5, "We demolish arguments andevery pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, andwe take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ." We needto refocus our mind and rise above every negative thought. Let yourthoughts be in line with the Word of God always. Whatever you say orthink is what manifests in your life. You need to get on with thoughts

that really matter.Your attitude to life and towards others determines your outcome. AsGod's Word says we become what we think, we should not give in toour daydreams, but fill our minds with the Word of God. Hide HisWord in your heart so that you will not sin against Him. Also, cleanseyour heart with the powerful Word of God and renew your mind on adaily basis.Child of God, let pure thoughts come from your heart. If you havenegative thoughts, you produce negativity, but if you have positivethoughts, you produce positive results. I encourage you to choose tohave positive thoughts as your life is shaped by your thoughts.Whenever negative thoughts crop up in your mind, use the Word ofGod to demolish them and focus on what God says about your life. Ifyou have a great attitude, you will always win and be victorious.Victory, at all times, is the will of God for you and this will be yourportion, in Jesus' precious name. AMEN.PRAYER OF SALVATIONIf you have not already committed your life to Jesus and you would liketo do so now, please pray this prayer:"Lord Jesus, I am sorry for all the things I have done wrong. Thank youfor dying for me on the cross, to set me free from my sins. I ask you tocome into my life as my personal Lord and Saviour, and fill me with theHoly Spirit. Thank you Lord Jesus. Amen."

By Richard CorcoranThe thought of beingpregnant may give you a feelingof elation or it may fill you withdread. Either way, if you truly arepregnant, most women want toknow that information as soon aspossible. Because if you arepregnant, it means that for betteror worse, your life is about tochange. So what are the earlysymptoms of a pregnancy? Howcan a woman tell early on if she'spregnant?Pregnancy symptoms differfrom woman to woman. Somewomen experience symptoms ofpregnancy within as little time asa week of conception. Othersexperience no pregnancysymptoms at all until they beginto show the "baby bump." Stillothers may experience differentpregnancy symptoms whenpregnant with different children. If you experience some of

the very early pregnancysymptoms listed below andbelieve that you may bepregnant, you should do a homepregnancy test. If you are still indoubt, arrange with your doctoror pregnancy help clinic to have apregnancy test. The reason whythis is important is that if you arepregnant and have bad lifestylehabits like smoking, drinking, oreven taking prescription drugs you could be inadvertentlyharming the developing fetus inyour body. Here are 5 common symptomsthat might indicate pregnancy:1. You just missed your normalmenstrual period. This is number one on the list ofindicators that are a warning signthat you may be pregnant. It'strue that just because you misseda period does not necessarilymean that you're pregnant. Thereare many other reasons that

could cause you to miss a period, such as fasting, extremeamounts of exercising, prescribedor nonprescribed medications, eating disorders, chronicillnesses, and many more.Nevertheless, if your menstrualperiod is normally prettyconsistent and like clockwork, and it doesn't appear onschedule this is a red flag andyou should consider taking apregnancy test.2. Your breasts have becomeamazingly sensitive.Tender or swollen breastssometimes occur just before aperiod. But these all also signsthat conception has taken placeand that you could be pregnant. If your breast are swollen beyondnormal this is a sign that thebody is preparing itself toproduce milk. Many womenreport that they discovered theywere pregnant when their breasts

became so sensitive that even theslightest brush against themhurts. Others described it as atingling sensation3. Heightened sensitivity tosmells. When a woman is in the earlystages of pregnancy, she maynotice that she is becominghypersensitive to smells of alltypes but especially foods.aromas foods and others. Infact, you may become sohypersensitive to the smell ofcertain foods that they cause aninvoluntary gag reflex or bringabout a feeling of nausea. Youmay also find yourself having anaversion to what were formerlyyour favorite foods, because ofthe smell.4. Excessive bloating.Bloating can be an indicationthat you're pregnant. Theproblem is hormones. Whenconception occurs, the hormone

progesterone floods your system. As the increased progesteroneenvelopes your body it slowsdown your digestive processesand leads to gas and bloating.5. Dizziness. Are you all of a sudden havingperiods of dizziness? Onceconception takes place, thedeveloping embryo will needfood. This food will be drawnfrom your body. Specifically, itwill use the blood sugar fromyour body as fuel to grow. If youaren't eating enough, this canlead to your feeling faint becauseof low blood sugar.Any or all of these symptomsdoes not mean that you arepregnant. Each of them could becaused by other factors as well. But they are all symptoms thatare common in women that havebecome newly pregnant.

By Josephine WilliamsThe California independent colleges and universities forma different educational governing body than the publicsystems. Each operates independently of each other and frompublic financing and control. Standards, requirements, costs, and the application process are unique to each campus, and sothe applicant must research and apply to all individually.Although there is the Association of Independent CaliforniaColleges and Universities (AICCU), which consists of seventytwo schools, there is no common system to connect them. Some familiar names are the University of Southern California(USC), the Claremont Colleges, University of Redlands,Stanford University, Whittier College, and Loyola Marymount. These schools and the hundred plus others offer a variety ofeducational opportunities: liberal arts, comprehensive, specialized, graduate, and professional. Anyone seekingadmission to an independent college/university must spendtime searching each desired campus for acceptancequalifications the sooner the better. What are the requirements? It may help to understandthe similarities to public universities. Some resemble the UC’s,others are like the CSU’s, and another group accept only topstudents, while the last group is specific to a specialty area likeperforming arts. Like the public counterparts, it is importantfor potential high school applicants to earn high grades incollege prep and advanced placement (AP) classes, score wellon the SAT/ACT tests, supply letters of recommendation, submit an essay, and in some cases have a personal interview. This is a brief overview; details can be found on specificwebsites. The cost of attending a private college is considerable andvaries at each location with financial aid to help offset tuition.Average cost to live oncampus is $45,000, offcampus$46,000, at home $40,000. Unfortunately, many prospectivestudents are turned off because of the high tuition, fees, andliving expenses, but college officials wish to open theircampuses to all qualified applicants through financial aid. Itincludes scholarships, loans, grants, and workstudy programsbased on need and merit.Due to the individuality of private educationalinstitutions, the information presented in this article is verygeneral. This is a group of high quality schools which offer awide range of degrees and credentials. They are worth adetailed investigation when considering a college to attend.

The Independent Story

By Yulian IsakovBonds provide an income stream andhelp diversify a stock portfolio. A bond's totalreturn includes both income and capitalappreciation or loss. Bonds are subject to creditrisk, interest rate risk, and market risk.Investors can buy individual bonds or bondmutual funds. Investing in bond mutual fundsallows individuals to diversify among manydifferent bond issues, thereby reducing creditrisk. Bonds are very popular securitiesbecause they regularly pay interest income andpay back the initial principal after the bondmatures. Bonds are popular with people ofvarious risk classes but they certainly appeal toconservative investors looking for a steadyincome stream. Bond mutual funds may beeven more attractive than buying intoindividual bonds because they provide aportfolio with increased diversification at a lowcost. Needless to say, before considering topurchase into a bond fund consider your risktolerance, objectives, and income needs andcompare that to the goals, risk level, andinvestment style of the bonds or bond funds youare interested in.

What is a Bond?A bond is simply a loan between an investorand the bond's issuer. Say a company issuesbonds and an investor can buy those bonds orin other words provide a loan to the company inreturn for a promise to pay back the initialinvestment after a specified period along withinterest during the intervening period. Theinterest rate agreed upon by the company andthe investor is called the coupon rate. When thebond matures or in other words when it's timefor the company to pay back the loan, the issuerrepays the investor's original investment.Since bond markets generally don't move intandem with equity markets, they can provideinvestors with the added diversification in theirportfolios. Furthermore, they provide investorswith a steady income stream. The onlyexception to this rule is for zerocoupon bonds, which from their name indicate that there areno interests rates attached to these bonds sothere is no income paid out over time; however, even though zerocoupon bonds provide nocash flow they are sold at a discount to theirface value and at maturity the investor gets paidthe full face value of the bond. There are many kinds of bonds available eachhaving varying risks, benefits, tax implicationsto an investor's overall portfolio. Most bondscan be generally organized under four majorcategories: corporate, government, governmentagency, and municipal. Corporate bonds areissued by corporations and depending on thecorporation that is issued them they can vary inrisk. For instance, a small company issuingbonds can offer attractive yields to investors butcan at the same time bring with it substantialamount of risk whereas a largecap companycan issue bonds that can be less risky becausethe investor knows that the chances of thelargecap company to default is slim. On theother hand, government bonds are probably thesafest types of bonds because they are issued bythe U.S. Treasury and backed by the credit ofthe U.S. government. Government agency andmunicipal bonds can vary substantially in riskbut they typically fall between corporate bondsand government bonds on the risk spectrum.

Bond Mutual FundsMany investors want the benefit ofdiversification to minimize their risk and theygenerally achieve this end by purchasing a bondmutual fund. This way investors can combinemay different bonds into one portfolio and stillpursue their fixed income objectives. Becausebond funds aim to provide a steady incomestream to investors, they are suited to investorsthat are looking to firstly minimize the impactof equity market fluctuations on their portfoliosand secondly to protect their principal andcurrent income. Bond funds may be the mostappropriate for investors that are nearingretirement, are in retirement or others who donot easily tolerate fluctuations in the value oftheir portfolios. However, a bond fund is simplya pooled resource that invests in many bonds,so before investing consider the underlyingindividual bonds held in the portfolioparticularly paying close attention the risk ofthose individual bonds and how that overallrisk may affect the fund and your portfolio.RisksAll bonds have come level of "credit risk," whichis the risk that the bond issuer will go intodefault before the bond matures. In thatinstance, you may lose a portion or all youroriginal principal and any income that mayhave been due. Bonds are often rated byMoody's and Standard & Poor's (S&P) toprovide investors on the creditworthiness of theissuer; Aaa or AAA are the highest credit ratingsgiven by these companies. Bond funds also canbe issued ratings just like individual bondsbased upon the quality of their underlying bondholdings.Like stocks and other investments, bonds canhave other risks from market fluctuations to aninvestor who is forced to sell them before theirmaturity date. If an investors is forced toliquidate his bond positions before their timeand the bond's price has fallen at this time, hewill lose part of his original investment as wellas all future income from the interest. Anotherrisk common to all bonds and bond funds isinterest rate risk. Interest rates and bond priceshave an inverse relationship, so when interestrates in the economy rise, the bond's price willgenerally fall and vice versa. However, bond holders can avoid running therisk of fluctuating interest rates and market riskif they hold on to their bonds until maturity. Onthe other hand, bond mutual fund investorsshould consider these risks more carefully whenpurchasing into the bond funds they areinterested in because fund managers canpotentially buy and sell bonds as they see fit tomeet the fund's objectives. As a result, interestrate risks and market risks become moreprominent and therefore risk loss because ofinherent fluctuations within the bond fund.Types of Bond FundsBond funds also come in many forms eachseeking to reach a different purpose andtherefore buy and sell individual securities toachieve their goals. Similarly to individualbonds, different bond funds have different riskfactors and benefits such as tax benefits. Somepopular bond funds include corporate, U.S.government, and municipal bond funds.

Since U.S. government bond funds arecomposed of securities backed by thecreditworthiness of the U.S. government, theyhold almost no credit risk. Nevertheless, theyare still affected by changes in marketconditions, interest rates just like all otherbonds, as well as inflation risks not keepingpace with inflation specifically. U.S.government bonds are taxed at the federal levelbut are exempt from state level taxes. U.S.government bond funds typically appeal toconservative investors looking for steadyincome streams and solid protection of theirprincipals. On the other spectrum, corporate bond fundsaim to invest in a variety of corporate issuedbonds with different credit risks. Somecompanies can potentially have substantialcredit risks while others have may have less. Inaddition, corporate bonds are affected byinterest rate and market risks. Needless to say,the potentially riskier a bond is can mean that ithas potentially higher yields; therefore, theseinvestments may be suitable for investors thatcan tolerate a bit more risk in pursuit of higherinterest income.Municipal bond funds invest in a variety ofbond issues of state government andmunicipalities. Municipal bonds are taxed atthe state and local levels and are exempt fromfederal taxes. Because of their potential taxbenefits, when compared to taxable securities, municipal bonds can be appropriate forinvestors in high federal tax brackets.Municipal bonds are affected by interest rateand market risks also.Reduce Risk When Investing in Bonds1. Try to match your bond maturities to yourinvestment time frame. For instance, if you areretired and you need to withdraw from yourportfolio each yeah to meet your daytodayexpenses, buy bonds or bond funds withmaturities of one year. In addition, dependingon your portfolio you can invest portions ofyour portfolio in intermediate bonds say 5 to 10year bonds and longterm bonds (10 years +),for higher interest rate payments.2. Longterm investors can reduce their risk bybuying both shortterm and longterm maturitybonds.3. Buy bonds or bond funds with averagematurities that range across the maturityspectrum but with heavier concentration inshorter maturities.Choose the Fund That Meets Your NeedAlthough every bond fund hold its own risks, you should always strive to balance the riskswith diversification. Diversification can helpreduce your overall portfolio risk from anyparticular fund. Professional management canhelp you save the hassle from having toresearch and evaluate the thousands of bondsand bond funds in the market. The best strategyis to speak with your Isakov Planning GroupFinancial Advisor to determine what your fixedincome needs actually are and then yourfinancial advisor can identify funds that willhelp you meet your needs.

By BettyAnn HeggieIn the hustle and bustle ofthe holiday season, it’s easy tobecome overwhelmed. One ofmy best SelfCare tools is toforget about the enormity ofwhat must be done. Rather thanexpect to take a giant step tocompletion, I simply use babysteps to reach my goal. It worksat home and at the office forboth activity and attitude! When working in managementat PotashCorp, I found that if Icame in and said, “There aregoing to be a lot of changesaround here” people froze.Making big changes scaredthem into immobility. But if Isaid ‘”I think we can improve bymaking a few small changes”,everyone nodded comfortably inagreement. They were allanxious to try.

On a personal basis, thisexperience became a basicplank of my weight lossprogram. I learned that mygreatest success came when Iforgot about the big number Ihad to lose (it was especiallydaunting when it was over 100pounds!). By instead focusingon one pound at a time, I wasable to take all those littlesuccesses, build on them, andeventually reach my big goal. It’s the same withChristmas. Forget aboutviewing your variousresponsibilities as amonumental task, and considerwhether there are some thingsthat don’t even need to be done.Focus on doing small parts of it,and doing them well; you’ll besurprised at your ability toaccomplish big things byconcentrating on these small

tasks! Just as children findpleasure in the smallest ofthings, life is made up of littlepleasures. And the best way toenjoy the holiday season is totake it in small measures andenjoy each tiny “baby step.”Here are some suggestions:Once a day between now andChristmas, take a minute eachday to ask what small Christmasactivities you could cut out. Then mentally run through theprocess of completing the tasksthat you have decided to do.Maybe you could make themeven smaller?Choose to do the holidayactivities that energize you, andask others to fill in the gaps.Take pleasure in the things thatyou choose to do, doing yourbest to enjoy the moment.Polishing silver can be verygratifying if you choose to do it

with gusto!Take a moment to give a smallcompliment to each person atyour Christmas celebrations.Incorporate a moment ofgratitude for each of thetraditions that you choose tokeep and each of the people atyour table.Fulfill yourself in a small way bysavouring your senses. Don’tjust hear the bells, really listento their sound. The pleasures of the holidayseason are there for the takingthis Christmas if we are ready toaccept the baby steps of tinydelights. Experiencing how thisrings true at home will motivateyou to try it at the office as well.By using baby steps to build onsmall successes the first thingyou know you’ll have reachedone of your bigger goals!

Take Baby Steps at Work and Home this Holiday

By Aaliyah ArthurMany people know the benefits ofhiring a house cleaning service to helpthem with their busy day to day lives. Afterall, when you are working full time andalso striving to be the best possible parentto your children, finding the time tothoroughly clean your home is a challenge. However, one time that people may notconsider using a cleaner is when they aremoving, but this is an excellent time tohire one. When you are moving, you have twohomes to consider. First, you need to keepyour current home in topnotch shape aspotential buyers come through on aregular basis. To a potential buyer, a smallcobweb in the corner could break apotential sale, as this little speck makesthem feel as if they feel you may neglectother areas of your home if you are notcareful about cobwebs. A house cleaningservice can come in and deep clean yourhome weekly, ensuring it sparkles and

shines for each potential buyer who walksthrough the door.In addition, on the day you are readyto move, you do not want to deal with thehassle of undoing the mess from yourmove. While you could leave it behind forthe new buyers, this hardly seems fairafter they have purchased your home fromyou and given you the freedom to move.Instead, you can hire a service to come inand clean up a little, freeing you to getsettled in your new place. What happens when you arrive atyour new home? Will the former ownershave shown you the same courtesy bycleaning it up for you? Maybe not. Again, you can hire a cleaner to come in andstraighten things up in your new homebefore you begin moving your boxes.Vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, andcleaning the windows before you move inmakes a world of difference on movingday, taking away much of yourresponsibility, and leaving you free to

worry about arranging yourbelongings rather thansweeping dust bunnies. This type of servicedoesn’t just apply tohomeowners. If you are alandlord, you know themess that some rentersleave behind at the end oftheir rental period.Sometimes finding theenergy to get in there andclean it up for the nextrenter is difficult. A housecleaning company canprovide end of tenancycleaning services, makingeverything sparkle for the next renter, andtaking this burden off of your shoulders.Sometimes the cost of hiring a serviceprevents landlords or homeowners fromconsidering it. If you stop and think aboutthe amount of time you would spendcleaning during these times, you realizethe cost efficiency of hiring a house

cleaning company. Your time is far betterspent packing and organizing ormarketing your rental property. Hire theright service during your move, and takethe pressure of tending to your space off ofyour shoulders.
