In order to ensure that our graduates fulfil the industry’s needs and standards, and graduate with internationally-recognised degrees, the School has put in place comprehensive programmes that have gained the accreditation of several local and international professional boards.

BOARD OF QUANTITY SURVEYORS MALAYSIA (BQSM)

Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM) is a statutory body, governing the quantity surveying profession and promoting the growth of the quantity surveying profession through regulation and continuous professional development.

BOARD OF ARCHITECTS MALAYSIA OR LEMBAGA ARKITEK MALAYSIA (LAM)

The Board of Architects Malaysia or Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM)is the Malaysian statutory authority responsible for the enforcement of the Architects Act. The Board has many roles and functions, one of them is to accredit architectural programmes offered in Malaysia.

The School’s architecture programmes are accredited by the Board of Architects Malaysia, or Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia (LAM), making us the first private university with this recognition. Our programme meets the requirements of LAM, ensuring that graduates are eligible for an exemption from the LAM Part 1 Examination, easing their pathway to becoming Graduate Architects with the board.

The Quantity Surveying (QS) programme is also acknowledged and accredited by leading international boards, including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) and the Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM). The RICS and PAQS accreditations place our

The reason I chose to study Quantity Surveying at

Taylor’s is because of its accreditations with BQSM,

RICS and PAQS. This certainly beneficial to us as QS

graduates, as it increases our chances in securing a job

upon graduation.

QS graduates on par with international standards, meeting the requirements for professional surveyors from over 140 countries. Our graduates will also gain automatic membership to BQSM upon graduation.

Our programmes meet the rigorous standards of these professional accreditation boards, due to our stringent entry requirements, comprehensive curriculum, students’ work and achievements, as well as the qualified teaching faculty. These professional recognitions enhance our students’ career opportunities and ease the pathway for them to further their studies or pursue a professional qualification after they step out of university.

PACIFIC ASSOCIATION OF QUANTITY SURVEYORS (PAQS)

The Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) is an international association of national organisations representing quantity surveyors in the Asia and Western Pacific region. One of the main roles of PAQS is to promote best practices of quantity surveying in the region.

ROYAL INSTITUTION OF CHARTERED SURVEYORS (RICS)

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is the world’s leading professional body for qualifications and standards in property, land and construction. RICS memberships offer a global passport to professional opportunities to more than 140 countries.

EXCELLING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Bong Chon Fan Bachelor of Science

(Hons) (Architecture)

One of the most interesting activities is the site analysis project, where we visit certain sites that are rich in culture. We are required to analyse and design a building that responds to the activities, cultures and climatic factors, as well as the site context. This really helped us to design structures that are relevant to the site and inspired us in our future designing process.

SABD students have continuously clinched awards in numerous local and international competitions, demonstrating their ability to apply classroom theories into practice and excel in real-world scenarios. These competitions provide opportunities for students to test their knowledge and skills in competitive settings and benchmark their solutions against their peers. They also provide an avenue to enhance their learning, and network with other students from different institutions.

At SABD, we believe that research goes hand-in-hand with teaching and learning, as it provides a more solid foundation and robust education of the subject matter. Our goal is to elevate our research centre, MASSA, into a renowned research centre in Southeast Asia, which focuses on scholarly activities and dissemination of knowledge on modern architectural heritage.

We intend to address the urgent need to include modern architecture as part of the architectural heritage in Southeast Asia, thus aiding the process of planning settlements and designing buildings that are suited to the context and continuity of the cultures of Southeast Asia.

As part of our initiatives to document our heritage, the students visited Kampung Cina, Kuala Terengganu, to examine the site and produce detailed drawings. These drawings were subsequently used to restore a temple to its former glory, after it was partly ruined in a fire.

Designing Functional Legacies

The Center for Modern Architecture Studies in Southeast Asia (MASSA), which was established in 2005, aims to create awareness of the significance of the modern architecture movement to the public, professionals and educational community with regards to the built environment.

MASSA aims to foster interest and promote studies in the ideas and heritage of modern architecture, through documentation of intellectual and physical heritage of modern architecture in the region. The documentation covers buildings, architect firms, policies, organisations and laws developed in Southeast Asia from the 1920s onwards.

For one of our projects, my classmates and I were required to document an

actual historical building in Malacca into architectural

orthographic drawings. Through this project, we

gained technical knowledge on documentation of an

architectural erection and also familiarised ourselves with

computer applications.

We emphasise on equipping students with relevant skills and capabilities, to enable them to contribute positively to an industry that is heavily focused on maintaining the balance of the built environment and ensuring a sustainable future.

Translating Theory into Practice

Our carefully tailored approach combines a strong foundation of theories, as well as avenues to apply these theories into practical settings, to maximise our students’ learning. To achieve this, we employ a variety of teaching and learning strategies that extend beyond the classroom, where students are exposed to real-life scenarios and industry-relevant experiences that are designed to bring the best out of them.

The faculty is committed to providing students with a challenging and rewarding educational experience, where students learn through creating, innovating and pushing the boundaries of building and design. Throughout their course of study, students are encouraged to explore, experiment and express ideas and techniques in their pursuit of gaining deeper insight into their chosen field of study.

Site Visits

Students participate in site visits, which teach them how to compose and analyse space, as well as understand the purpose and process of space creation.

Technical Visits

On-site technical visits provide the opportunity for students to understand construction methodologies, as well as project management concepts, tools and techniques.

Field Trips

Students undertake educational visits to various places of interest both locally and abroad, including art galleries, historical sites, factories, and more, to gain insights and witness the concept of architecture and design in practice.
