The Tbilisi Ioseb Grishashvili History Museum has been in existence for over a century now. Throughout this period, numerous collections and tens of thousands of artifacts have been assembled and housed by the Museum, illustrating multifarious aspects of the material and spiritual lives of the multiethnic city inhabitants and those with diverse confessions. The visitors are able to admire the revived uniqueness and zest of a city located at the crossroads of the east and the West, and the inimitable synthesis that is achieved owing to the crossover of the european and Asian cultures.
The Tbilisi History Museum was founded in 1910 by the city self-government and was originally named the “Tiflis Municipal Museum”. This is documented in the “Tiflis Municipal Museum Program” issued by the self-government, which makes reference to the idea of establishing a municipal museum alongside listing the activities dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Tbilisi self-government, primarily aimed at promoting its activities. This was the first museum ever to bear this title in the Russian empire, demonstrating the significance of our capital and the high cultural standing of its dwellers.
establishment of the Museum was spearheaded by the city leaders themselves (messieurs Vasil Cherkezishvili, Alexander Matinov, Alexander Khatisov, Prince Nikalai Arghutinsky-Dolgorukov, et al.), whose appeal opened doors to the first museum collections. It is noteworthy that most of the book funds assembled by the city executives initially bore the city stamp (“от города”) and the Municipal Museum stamp afterwards, while the exhibit was originally housed at the City Principal’s office. The Museum started to accept some valuable works and art objects illustrating the Tbilisi history from the renowned individuals and their families, including messieurs Davit Sarajishvili, Ivane Porakishvili, Alexander Arghutinsky-Dolgorukov (former City Principal), Vasil Cherkezishvili (former City Principal), Gabriel Sundukyantz, Giorgi Tamamshev, et al. The city’s Deliberative Assembly ordered photo albums by the well-known photographer Dimitri Yermakov, and
on the Museum’s initiative the works of art portraying the Tbilisi themes were thereafter produced by the talented painters such as Alexander Tsimakuridze, Davit Kakabadze, Franz Roubaud, Boris Fogel, et al.
The first Museum executive was the City Principal himself. Later on, prior to allotting a building for the Museum, the city administration assigned several rooms to gather the displays at the House of the Destitutes, aka the “Upovarta Sakhli” founded by the Zubalashvili brothers (former 4 Sasamartlo St., 4 Zubalashvili St. at present), where Mr. Kedrov, the superintendent of the House of the Destitutes entrusted by the Zubalashvilis was commissioned to assemble and safeguard the incoming collections.
The Museum was virtually nonoperational during the years 1913 to 1924, and later from 1941 to 1946, which saw the recurring hardships throughout the country. Nevertheless, its staff continued to assemble collections and to replenish the assets. The Museum resumed its operations in 1924 and was renamed the “Tiflis executive Committee Museum”. In December 1926, the Tbilisi Museum Director and its vehement advocate, the renowned researcher of the Tbilisi history Nikoloz Badriashvili spearheaded an exhibition titled the “Old Tbilisi”. To support the exhibition and the Museum itself, I. Grishashvili presented his writing: “The Old Tbilisi Literary Bohemia” first time ever in the form of a lecture. Yet again, while delivering his speech at the conservatoire on May 23, 1926, he

referred to the exhibition as to the illustration of the “Old Tbilisi Literary Bohemia”.
1928 marked the opening of yet another exhibition titled the “New Tbilisi”.
Nikoloz Badriashvili, who had been managing the Museum for 34 years, spearheaded a series of notable exhibitions about Tbilisi not only in the capital, but also overseas. Under his guidance, the materials pertaining to Tbilisi were prepared and sent to the exhibition organized in Paris and London in 1933-1937. Nikoloz Badriashvili recruited a team of professionals, including messieurs Saurmag Kakabadze, Shura Ukladnikov and Ms. Nino Gvatua, who were keen on safeguarding, taking inventory and looking after the displays and collections in addition to running the expositions. It is noteworthy that the construction works undertaken during the Soviet period altered the way Tbilisi looked, and numerous buildings, small workshops and commercial shops eventually fell prey to the construction. Nikoloz Badriashvili further recruited the well-known masters of scale modelling (Mikheil Mansvetashvili, Leon Nabatov, Saakyan, Barikin), who were instructed and commissioned to design the scale models of the demolished buildings, workshops, shops and other facilities with simple materials (wood, veneer, cardboard, shingle, etc.), hence reviving the old Tbilisi appearance and conveying to us the picturesque city looks. Under Badriashvili’s guidance and owing to the staff endeavours, the Museum turned into the prominent hub for safeguarding and promoting the Tbilisi cultural heritage.
Many years that followed have seen the remarkable success in terms of gathering the displays, and the works housed by the Tbilisi Municipal Museum were replenished with thousands of artifacts and outstanding collections. Consequently, the Museum’s domain expanded, and in 1943 it acquired the status of the Tbilisi historical and ethnographic museum. Throughout 1925-1936 the Museum was located within the former Feodosyev Church (chess club thereafter), whereas after 1936 up until 1984 its long-time premises were on the Salalaki range (former 11 Komsomol Avenue). In 1972 it hosted an exposition portraying the Tbilisi history with the decorative design done by the renowned Georgian painter Avto Varazi. Irakli Parjiani, who was acclaimed as a highly talented painter, worked here as an artist-instaurator in the years that followed.
Under the guidance of the Candidate of Historical Science and the Museum Director Otar Tkeshelashvili, the Museum conducted archaeological excavations from 1954 to 1966, eventually adding remarkable archaeological finds to the Museum’s Archaeology Fund. The excavations continued in Tbilisi in the years that followed.
In 1967 the Museum was named after the poet-academician, the old Tbilisi aficionado and the Tbilisi Museum advocate Ioseb Grishashvili and has kept his name since.
Since 1984 onwards, the Tbilisi History Museum has been located at 8 Sioni St. in Tbilisi, within the so-called “Karvasla” building having the status of the historical monument.

“Karvasla”, “Caravanserai” or the “Inn” was primarily a large facility characteristic to the medieval Georgian cities, which provided accommodation to the merchant travelers, their animals, merchandise and transport. Some parts of the caravanserais housed the commercial workshops. The most prominent of the caravanserais located in the old Tbilisi was the one built during the King Rostom (1632-1658), which is located in the oldest part of Tbilisi – Kala, south of the Sioni Temple at 8 Sioni St. The most valuable legacy from the King Rostom’s epoch is the basement covered with the cruciform vault system that has survived the caravanserai built by him. At present, it is considered part of the historical monument’s cultural legacy.
The building has had numerous owners throughout its lifetime. Once built, the King Rostom bestowed it on the Sioni Temple in 1650. The Metropolitan Tbileli restored it in the 18th century and the caravanserai acquired the Tbileli name along with the King’s. At the end of the 18th century, erekle II confiscated the building from the Sioni Temple and bequeathed it to his grandson, the Prince Davit. In the beginning of the 19th century, the caravanserai building was purchased by an affluent Armenian merchant Gevork Artsrun, however, during his ownership the building was destroyed by fire. The caravanserai had changed several owners in the years that followed. Since 1924 it had lost its original function, and had been used as a storage facility up until it started to house the Tbilisi History Museum.
We are unaware as to how the caravanserai looked during the King Rostom. The building was destroyed during the Agha Mohammad Khan’s invasion in 1795, and the new caravanserai (Artsrunian) was built on its ruins soon to be razed by fire again and then overhauled in 1855. The façade facing the Sioni Street was designed in the modern style in 1912, whereas the one facing the embankment represented the classicist style (1820). The Tbileli (Artsrun) caravanserai precisely replicates its predecessor’s lines. The cellars across two floors are of different chronologies, the earliest one dating back to the King Rostom’s epoch. There was a large courtyard with a beautiful pool right in the center of caravanserai, and the niche in one of the walls contained a statue of Mercury, the God of Trade. The antechamber court was surrounded
by galleries. There were warehouses arranged in the caravanserai’s 25 cellars. 11 shops on the first floor were rented out to tailors and shoe-makers, while the trading in the european and Asian woolen fabric, silk and other merchandise took place in 25 shops across the second floor. There was a hotel with 33 rooms on the upper floor. The Tbileli (Artsrun) architecture always greatly appealed to the foreign travelers. While describing the 19th century Tbilisi and referring to the magnificence of the building nearby the Sioni Temple in their memoirs, the travelers such as Frederic Dubois de Montpereux, Max von Tilmann and others always implied the caravanserai in its sheer grandeur.
In 1984 the architects Giga Batashvili and Teimuraz Ghvaladze carried out the needed reconstruction to house the Museum within the caravanserai building. Following reconstruction, a series of thematic exhibitions portraying the Tbilisi history were organized under the guidance of the Museum Director and the well-known researcher of the Tbilisi history Prof. Teimuraz Beridze.
The exposition illustrating the Tbilisi history from the ancient times up until 1921 was opened in 1991 under the guidance of the artist-expositionists Alexander Chkheidze and Soso Kenchandze, placing the Museum’s archaeological, photo-documentary, ethnographic and other materials on display. The exposition was later supplemented with a collection bequeathed to the Museum by the renowned choreographer Yuri Zaretsky, which was a standalone exhibition titled “The Tbilisi Aristocrat’s Flat from the Second Half of 19th Century and the First Half of 20th Century”.

In 1991 the Museum was named the Tbilisi History Museum.
In 2005 the Tbilisi History Museum became part of the National Museum together with other leading museums of Georgia.
The museum has been assembling funds for over a century now (housing more than 50,000 display objects) illustrating the Tbilisi history, life and culture and holding notable collections and artifacts from the ancient times to the present. Most of them have been collected through archaeological and household expeditions, although the Museum also houses the works acquired from individuals such as the archaeological, numismatic, ethnographic, documentary and photo-phono materials for the funds, paintings, graphics, decorative and applied art works. Of special note is the charity by the renowned choreographer Yuri Zaretsky. In March 1985 he bequeathed to the Museum various collections (mainly the antiques) he had amassed throughout his life, hence demonstrating his strong affection to his beloved city.
The Museum’s collections and artifacts are systematized into ten funds by thematic breakdown and material type. The Precious Metal Fund houses the silver-adorned items: silver girdles, adornments, horns, articles for domestic use, etc. primarily of the 19th and 20th centuries.
The Archaeology Fund contains the materials found on the Tbilisi sites and its surroundings from the eneolithic period all through the late medieval period (Navtlughi, Avlabari, Dedatsikhe, erekle II,
etc.). Included in the Fund is a remarkable agate gem seal (5th century) presumably belonging to Vakhtang Gorgasali. It is noteworthy that the fund is still being replenished owing to the excavations carried out in Tbilisi (materials found on the sites of the Forty Martyrs Church, old caravanserai located on Leselidze Street, Meidan area, etc.).
The Archives Fund houses the archive documents such as plans, maps, posters, Tbilisi building schemes, old advertisements, labels, etc. Of special note are the documents signed by Giorgi II and Anton I, and the construction projects by the well-known architects such as Albert Zaltsman, Otto Simonson, Mikheil Kalashnikov.
The Woodwork Fund contains the household items, furniture, scale models, collections of the Georgian, Oriental and Western european musical instruments, etc. The most prominent pieces include the walnut chairs acquired from the Mukhran-Batoni family, one of the earliest pianos, gramophone, harmonium, scale models of the Tbilisi buildings, majority of which are nonexistent today (authors: Leon Nabatov, Alexander Mansvetashvili, Saakyan, Vardzigulov, et al.).
The Household Items Fund holds the collections made from metal, ceramics, glass, porcelain and plastic. It houses a series of items that used to be part of the Tbilisi’s everyday life, but have eventually turned into the genuine museum objects as they are not in use anymore, like the ritual utensils. The copper collections comprise the 18th and 19th century Iranian utensils, 19th century ritual bakery, ritual “Marani” (drinking vessel) for the bride and bridegroom at weddings, etc. The most prominent pieces include Tekla Batonishvili’s personal belongings: casket, mirror, saucer, etc.
The Numismatics Fund houses the numismatic, phaleristic and sphragistic materials. The items of special interest include the coins minted in the names of the Georgian kings Demetre I, Giorgi III, Tamar, Giorgi Lasha, Rusudan and others, majority of which was manufactured at the Tbilisi Mint. A collection of coins endowed by the renowned Georgian scientist and numismatist Davit Kakabadze, as well as those acquired from Melik Sarkisov, Alexander Karbelashvili, Leon Nabatov and other Tbilisi residents and donated by various institutions are especially noteworthy. The notable collections also include Davit Sarajishvili’s Courtyard of "Karvasla"

seal, Tbilisi rabbi’s seal, badges of the Tbilisi’s Superintendent of Commerce and the Municipal Appraiser, cabman’s number plate, etc.
The Photography and Negatives Fund combines up to 13,000 photos, postcards, glass plate and film negatives, albums, including the Yermakov’s album. The materials preserved in the Fund masterfully portray the peculiarities of the Tbilisi architecture and the Tbilisi dwellers’ character. The distinguished works include those produced by the well-known photographers, such as Alexander Roinashvili, Dmitri Yermakov, eduard Klar, Felix Ivanitski, evtikhi Zhvania, et al. Included are the works by the contemporary photographers as well.
The Fine Arts Fund holds numerous works portraying architecture and the Tbilisi dwellers’ character. The fund contains paintings, graphics, sculpture, engravings, lithographs, batik and other works of art. The most distinguished among those are the so-called Tbilisian portraits of the Georgian aristocrats by the unknown artists.
The paintings and graphic works produced by the Georgian and foreign painters on the Tbilisi themes are especially noteworthy. The Fund houses the canvas art by Mose Toidze, Davit Gvelesiani, Alexander Tsimakuridze, Davit Kakabadze, Franz Roubaud, Boris Fogel, Boris Romanovski, Davit Jorjadze, elene Akhvlediani, Lado Gudiashvili, Gigo Gabashvili, Richard Zommer, et al.
The Drapery and Soft Items Fund contains rugs and carpets, fabrics, fur and leather items and ready-made garments. Included are the Georgian national male and female costumes, garments worn by various ethnic minorities residing in Tbilisi (Kurds and Jews), european costumes and accessories, headdresses (headgear “Chikhtikopi”, forehead bands), embroideries, footwear, etc. The Fund also houses a collection of the artisans’ union (the so-called “Amkars”) banners, linen, bath packs, tablecloths, mat bags, saddlebags, etc. The distinguished works include the silver thread embroidered and beaded items, etc. The preserved objects also contain Tekla Batonishvili’s nacre-incrusted bath slippers and silver thread embroidered sandals – items purchased from the Amilakhvari family.
The Panoply Fund contains the items of the 18th and 19th centuries and the World War II, including
cold arms and firearms. It primarily houses the Tbilisian, Caucasian, Russian and Oriental weaponry, like daggers, sabres, pistols, powder flasks, guns, etc.
The collection of the renowned choreographer Yuri Zaretski contains the French and Russian furniture, Western european and Russian paintings and graphic works, porcelain ware, miniatures on bones and enamel, icons, various household items and adornments, small sculptures, etc.
The Museum also holds a collection of the anniversary gifts from various cities across Georgia. They were produced on a special occasion to commemorate 1,500 years of the Tbilisi history in 1958 (big silver and porcelain vases with inscriptions, albums, etc.). The works from the Museum’s collections are successfully displayed both at the domestic and foreign exhibitions. Various scientific and popular publications, albums, guidebooks, etc. have been issued thus far based on the study of its collections. A compilation of the Museum’s transactions have also been published. The activities carried out within the Museum are of diverse profile, comprising exhibition, collection maintenance, preservation, inventory taking, management, education, etc.
The educational programs are designed in line with the Museum’s new functions. They are focused on the various generation needs and cultures, and draw on the Museum’s collections as their primary source.
Apart from displaying the past history, the Tbilisi History Museum also exhibits contemporary art works. There is an exhibition hall on the third floor of the building, where the works of the Georgian and foreign artists are displayed on a regular basis.
The Tbilisi History Museum is one of those exceptional museums, which combine the movable cultural heritage monuments within a single immovable monument. The past organically blends with the present, while the ambience and the historic milieu add unique value and purpose to the place.

Arcaeology fund In the earliest years of the Museum’s existence, the archaeological materials from the Tbilisi sites were
recovered on a random basis. The reconnaissance works in the Tbilisi area commenced in 1954-1955, which necessitated the stationary archaeological excavations.
Since 1956, the Tbilisi History Museum has been carrying out excavations on various Tbilisi sites first in conjunction with the archaeological expeditions of the History Institute, and then independently. These sites included Dedatsikhe, erekle II Square, Botanical Garden, Shavteli Street, Gldani, Saburtalo, 26 Commissars, Samghebro Street, 300 Aragveli Garden, Avlabari, Balneological Resort, Leselidze Street, Abanotunabi, Meidan, Forty Martyrs Church, etc.
At present, the Museum’s Archaeology Fund houses up to thirty collections, containing materials of the Late Bronze Age, Late Antiquity and those of the early to late Medieval period. The Archaeology Fund of the Tbilisi History Museum houses more than 25,000 works.

Precious Metal FundGeorgia boasts the ancient traditions of working with precious metals. The Tbilisi dwellers have long used
the silverworks of high artistic merit, which served as the everyday commodity alongside having the pure aesthetic value.
The interactions among the various ethnocultures and influences contributed to the creation of the diverse urban culture in Tbilisi – a city located at the junction of the trade routes, which later became the Transcaucasus administrative hub as it subsequently came into contact with Russia. This is undeniably illustrated by the silver collection held at the Museum, which contains a series of items of both Georgian and foreign, including Daghestani, Armenian and Russian provenance. Working with silver has long been a distinctive skill in Tbilisi, as evidenced by the Silver Street (Vertskhlis Kucha) where the silver craftsmen used to work, and which still retains its name.
The Georgians have long used a series of techniques of working with silver and gold, such as filigree, niello, grenetis (“tsvara”), “zarnishi” (cold inlay), gilding. All of these techniques were applied in making the works displayed in the Museum.
The Museum primarily exhibits the silver-plated weapons, like daggers, sabres, guns, knives and powder flasks dating back to the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The luxurious weapons and belt daggers were used to point to the high social class of their holders, although the silver belts were also considered as the essential dress attributes for those at the low end of the social hierarchy, like artisans and merchants.
The Museum also displays household and ritual silver tableware, adornments, other small objects for household use or religious worship, etc.

Woodwork FundThe Woodwork Fund contains household objects, furniture, scale models, musical instruments, etc. Wood
is a rather easy-to-access material, and Georgia has long boasted the traditions of woodwork. All households owned the wooden objects of some sort, like the various types of boxes, chests, tables, cradles, combing devices, spinning wheels, etc. Included in the Fund are the scale models of the Tbilisi buildings.
During the 1920s-30s of the 20th century, the Soviet authorities embarked on the sweeping construction, which completely altered the way the old Tbilisi looked, and numerous city districts and buildings eventually fell prey to the construction. The Museum’s administration assembled a team of the well-known masters of scale modelling such as Leon Nabatov, Mikheil Mansvetashvili, Barikin, as these individuals had very good recollections of the old city shops, restaurants, workshops and dwelling houses. By using very simple materials such as wood, veneer, cardboard, shingle, glue, plasticine, etc. they recreated the scale models of the Tbilisi buildings, conveying to us the picturesque city looks.
The Woodwork Fund also houses a collection of the Georgian, Oriental and Western european musical instruments.

Metalware CollectionMost of the materials preserved in the Metalware Collection are of the Georgian-Iranian provenance and
date back to the 18th and 19 centuries, while the materials of the Russian and european provenance are of a later period and date back to the 19th and 20th centuries. The presence of the Iranian items in the collection points to the vibrant political, economic and cultural relations that had existed between the two countries for centuries. Subsequently, as Georgia became part of the Russian empire, the city was increasingly exposed to the Russian and european influences.
The materials preserved in the Metalware Collection are primarily made from copper and brass and include household, decorative and ritual implements and utensils, like flagons, vases, ibriks, mugs, copper jugs, braziers, baking molds, samovars, lanterns, lamps, candlesticks, etc. Some of the items bear inscriptions in the Georgian, Persian and Russian languages that trace their provenance. The majority of the implements preserved in the Metalware Collection includes the Georgian utensils characterized by simplicity, refined shapes and peculiar treatment techniques, giving them uniqueness that has long been ascribed to the prominent embossment traditions in Georgia. The Iranian utensils are distinguished by their outer decorative treatment. The Iranian artisans used to apply diverse ornamental patterns and various treatment methods, such as stamping, incision, scratching, openwork cutting, painting with organic dyes, etc. Most of the displays in the Metalware Collection are primarily acquired from or donated by individuals.

Ceramics CollectionThe Household Items Fund houses the ceramics collection alongside metalware, porcelain ware and
glassware.Tbilisi was the oldest hub for manufacturing and utilizing ceramics, as evidenced by the archaeological
finds recovered from the Tbilisi sites. The ceramics collection contains the ceramic utensils manufactured in the 18th and 19th centuries primarily
at the domestic utility centers. These objects continued to serve as the main articles of consumption for the Georgian households. The ceramic ware preserved at the Museum includes both the terracotta and glazed ceramic works having different household applications. The terracotta articles were used to store water and wine, whereas the glazed ceramics were mostly for marinades and jams. The Museum’s repository houses the Matsoni (sour plain yoghurt) jars, haricot bean pots, dosing utensils, jugs, egg-shaped pitchers (Qvevri), ewers, etc. Among the notable pieces is the ritual utensil “Marani”, i.e. drinking vessel, designated for wedding ceremonies for the bride and bridegroom. The “Marani” was designed on the principle of the shared vessels, and symbolized the newlyweds’ sharing of joy and grief throughout their future life.

Numismatics FundThe Numismatics Fund of the Tbilisi History Museum has been in existence since 1937. It displays the coins
acquired from or donated by individuals, as well as those recovered by archaeological expeditions organized by the Tbilisi History Museum and the Archaeological Research Center throughout various years.
These archaeological finds shed light to how money had been circulating over the centuries in and outside Tbilisi, what the city residents’ economic status was, and how they connected and interacted with the outside world.
The Numismatics Fund houses more than 1,000 Georgian, Oriental, european and Russian bronze, copper and silver coins and medals. The earliest pieces include the Roman coins of the 1st century BC, while the latest are those coined at the Tbilisi Mint in the first half of the 19th century. Alongside the coins, the Numismatics Fund has continuously been replenished by the memorial medals, orders, badges and breast insignia acquired from or donated by the Tbilisi residents. Included in the notable pieces are the collections donated by the well-known scientist and numismatist Davit Kapanadze, and those by the Jewish Historic-ethnographic Museum.

Fine Arts FundThe Fine Arts Fund is one of the most notable funds at the Tbilisi History Museum, holding the collections
of paintings, graphic works and sculpture. There are up to 2,000 works of art displayed. The Fund holds the canvas paintings and graphic works of Gigo Gabashvili, Mose Toidze, Lado Gudiashvili,
Davit Kakabadze, elene Akhvlediani, Davit Gvelesiani, Vasil Jorjadze and other Georgian painters. The paintings of Amayak Akopyan, Stefanoz Nersesyan, Vano Khojabegov, Gevorg Bashinjaghyan, Gigo Sharbabchyan, Albert Dilbaryan and other Armenian artists are especially noteworthy, as these artists drew inspiration from old Tbilisi while producing their artwork.
The Fund also preserves the works of art by the Russian and european painters such as Ilya Zankovsky, Boris Romanovsky, Viktor Dubrovin, Luigi Longo, Oscar Schmerling and others. The uniqueness of the old Tbilisi and the Tbilisi residents of various social classes, with their vivid character and personalities, made indelible impressions on these artists.

Soft I t ems FundThe Museum’s Soft Items Fund houses the collections of garments, footwear, clothing accessories,
embroideries, fur and leather articles, carpets, rugs, etc. There are over 1,600 displays in this collection, most of which have been acquired from or donated by
individuals. Included in the collection are the Georgian national male and female costumes and their accessories
(forehead bands, Lechakis and Baghdads – the varieties of the Georgian female headdresses, elongated sleeve outfits, plastrons, girdles, shank straps, Chokha bullet holders, etc.), as well as the national garments worn by various ethnic minorities residing in Tbilisi (Kurds and Jews), european dresses and accessories (laces, gloves, adornments, etc.)
Most of the carpet items (carpets, rugs, mat bags, saddlebags, striped woven rugs, etc.) date back to the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
The carpets from various places and regions and of diverse provenance were quite common in Tbilisi. The Museum houses the Georgian, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Kurdish and Karabakhian items.
The Soft Items Fund also contains the artisans’ union (the so-called “Amkars”) banners that belong to the various professional associations and date back to the 19th-20th centuries.

Panoply FundThe Panoply Fund houses both the old weaponry and those that were in mainstream use during World
War II. The weapons were of vital importance to Georgians, as the country constantly stood on the defensive
against its enemies. The Fund contains cold arms (daggers, sabres, knives), as well as firearms (pistols, powder flasks, guns,
machine guns, cannons, etc.). The sabres, daggers, pistols and guns mostly date back to the 19th century, whereas the powder flasks trace
to the second half of the 18th century. The Fund primarily holds the Tbilisian, Caucasian, Russian and Oriental weaponry collection.

Yuri Zaretsky CollectionTbilisi and the Tbilisi lifestyle have often inspired various visitors, and many of them have cherished the
city as their native location ever since their first encounter. One of such visitors was Yuri Zaretsky, a Russian national born in Zaporozhye and the renowned ballet master, choreographer of many prominent Georgian plays and films of the 1960s-80s.
Yuri Zaretsky was also well known for collecting works of art. In 1985 (several days before his death) he bequeathed the collection he had been assembling for 30 years to Tbilisi, his beloved city. The collection contains the artifacts of the Georgian, Russian and european provenance, like the european furniture of various styles, works of fine art – paintings, graphics, icon painting, miniature, small plastic arts; works of applied and decorative art – porcelain, crystal, glass, fraget and bronze vases and candlesticks. Up to 400 items overall.
