Pedal Power and Tecoway - Design BriefUSP: Carbon free food delivery

BackgroundSam Harris is a student in Bristol and has started a bike delivery company called Pedal Power Transport. The electric & push bike company currently offers cycle taxi's, couriers and mobile advertising.

Tecoway (eco-takeaway) is a sub-brand that Sam is developing as part of Pedal Power. Tecoway is an ethical and community-based organisation established out of the need to reduce the economic cost of take-away food deliveries on restaurant owners as well as environmental cost of using motorised vehicles on climate change, local air pollution and traffic congestion.

Tecoway provides takeaway delivery services to restaurants using push and electric bikes within city centres starting in Bristol. Our mission is to remove carbon emissions from takeaway food deliveries; thereby making cities cleaner, healthier and less congested.

Tecoway works with a growing network of keen and experienced cyclists who are interested in contributing to this mission whilst being paid in the process. Tecoway draws its employee’s strength from the student population that live around city centres as well as those who have free-hours in the evening for getting fit, contributing to a greener environment and earning an extra income.

Testing has estimated that Tecoway cyclists can deliver food faster than it will take a car driver during peak congestion time in Bristol city centre. This is exclusive of the time that will be saved from locating a parking space in narrow streets or residences in the city centre.

Tecoway is part of ‘Pedal Power Transport’ which has been successfully operating since July 2011 and has received awards, support and sponsorship from local and regional organisations for its beneficial and ethical business model. The directors have specific experience of the food transport industry with numerous regular and bespoke deliveries of bread, cakes, buffet’s, veg-boxes and takeaway food for local restaurants in Bristol.

Tecoway intends to take a significant share of food delivery in Bristol, thereby reducing the impact of food takeaway delivery on the environment, reduce congestion, support local restaurant business, and create more part-time jobs for students and keen cyclists. We want to create a future where people are going to wonder what to order for their Tecoway that night. Marketing materials will play an essential role if this is to be successful.

The Brief for Good for Nothing

1. Name: Sam is happy with the name Tecoway, however he is open to ideas if you come up with something better in the first week. If you decide to stick with Tecoway, there is a design challenge to highlight the ‘eco’ in the word so that a. people pronounce it like t-ecoway and not ‘tech-oway’ and b. understand that it is an eco-friendly food delivery service.

2. Logo, strapline, web design and communications (designs for web, leaflets, posters etc…)Tecoway wants to have a social, friendly, fun and trustworthy image. But it does not want to be too childish as we are delivering a reliable and professional service. We just don’t want the big faceless corporate image of some delivery companies.Core values: Fun, green, honest

Designs should be new but the branding of Pedal Power Transport should be taken into consideration so that they look to be related. Let’s say Pedal Power is the ‘daddy’ company.

3. Visualising ImpactHelp Tecoway build applications or infographics that help to demonstrate the impact of their business on city environments and job creation, e.g. no. of takeaway journeys made per day in a city by car/van, pollution caused, impact of using their vehicles instead, jobs created etc.. Bristol research on carbon emissions and traffic, congestion etc…
