Welcome to 2011 at King’s

The sun arrived along with our primary and Year 8 students for the first day of school on Monday morning.

It was the Prep students first day of ‘big school’ and they arrived looking very grown up in their uniforms. There were many hugs and not too many tears as their special day was celebrated by parents and friends. The New Parents morning tea was a great success as we enjoyed the company of over 50 Prep parents. They were later joined by Year 8 parents who were able to meet some of our wonderful high school teachers. We would like to thank the ladies from the Church who helped with the morning tea and welcomed our new parents.

Tuesday saw the return of our high school students and welcomed new students. There was a lot of enthusiasm and an air of excitement around the College. The Year 11s look great in their new, white shirts!

We would also like to welcome all of our new staff who have joined us this year. The unique talents and gifts you bring will add to the diversity we enjoy at King’s and enrich the lives of our students.

We wish all students and their families an enjoyable school year and trust that King’s will continue to be a great platform for success in your lives.

Early Learning Programs Parenting with Power

Making SkillsWelcome back to another exciting

year of your child’s schooling in 2011. We hope you had a fantastic festive season and enjoyed spending time with your family and friends.

Scripture of the week: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

The Real Issues are Harder to SeeParents who only focus on behaviour change are devas-

tated when their children reveal unresolved issues of the heart, as they grow older. The child who steals the family car, the unmarried girl who gets pregnant, or the teenage boy who starts using drugs have one thing in common: a heart problem that’s developed over a long period of time.

The heart consists of thoughts, intentions, motivations, desires and fantasies. Children play out foolishness in their heart first, long before it comes out in their actions. Many parents discipline with a two-step process. First, they see wrong behaviour and second, they use a number of tech-niques to get their child to do what is right. Behaviour is changed, but the heart hasn’t been addressed. A better dis-cipline process requires two more important steps, making four altogether.

First, identify the wrong behaviour. For example, your daughter begins to complain when you ask her to help with the dishes. Second, identify the dishonouring heart issue. Maybe she has a problem with anger or doesn’t handle in-structions well. Third, identify the honouring heart issue needed. She could develop flexibility, giving a few minutes to be helpful. Then, fourth, the right behaviour grows out of the honouring heart issue. She could help with the dishes without complaining, or respectfully discuss an alterna-tive. With these four steps, instead of two, you can address what’s going on below the surface and a more complete discipline that teaches children about their hearts.

Strategy for the week: Giving a consequence isn’t the end of the parent’s responsibility. Sometimes a consequence just gets the child’s attention, allowing the parent then to address deeper heart-related is-sues. Talk about the underlying motivations and the deeper issues. Helping children change their hearts is harder, but that’s where the lasting change takes place.

Get Set For Prep There were mixed emotions as parents settled their

prep children into the first day of school. The orien-tation was an excellent way of helping families with the big adjustment, all making for a happy start on Monday. It’s wonderful to see parents entrusting their young students into the capable hands of staff. Thank you for expressing your confidence in this regard!

Welcome to 2011My goodness - how quickly did the

holidays go by?!! Perhaps as a parent of school age children you did not feel that such was the case. Still we are grateful for the holidays and for the fact that we did not suffer the terrible tragedy of flooding that we witnessed in other parts of Queensland and indeed other states.

Welcome to the new school year. We are looking for-ward to meeting with you over the course of 2011. Each new year, and indeed each new day, holds such promise and opportunities for all of us to learn and to grow. We look forward to helping your child make the most of all that King’s has to offer.

May I take this opportunity to point out some ways to assist your child at school.

1. Have a positive attitude to school. Displaying in-terest in what your child is doing at school shows that you value education. Speak positively about the school and staff and try to present the positive aspects of situations. Rather than expressing any concerns you may have to your child in a negative manner, please contact the school to clarify the un-derlying situation or circumstance - this will usually allay your concerns.

2. Provide a consistent daily routine. Younger chil-dren in particular are more settled and confident if they have a routine. Older children too feel secure when life is more predictable.

3. Schedule time. It is beneficial to teach your children to make the best use of their time. High school aged children need to establish an after school schedule where they write down commitments such as work, sport and activities, TV programs and time for social networking (if this is allowed). They should then in-sert where they will do homework, assignments and reading. This of course is only beneficial if they fol-low the schedule.

4. Have high but realistic expectations. Encourage your children to always do the best work they can. It is their attitude and effort which is to be encour-aged and admired.

5. Set goals for the year. Without goals there is no focus or direction. Help your child set achievable goals. For younger children, it is necessary to work on shorter time periods - week, month, term, se-mester. Celebrate success.

6. Become involved with the school. Support func-tions at the school. Always attend Parent/Teacher interview evenings. Speak with the teacher/s. For high school parents, do not allow your child to dis-

Growing Up In Australia, an ongoing study of 10,000 children, has found that parents play a major role in helping children be successful at school. Dr Susan Walk-er, one of the study researchers from the Queensland University of Technology, says the level to which parents become involved in their children’s schooling has been shown to be a major influence on their children’s learn-ing outcomes.

We look forward to partnering with you in the educa-tion of your child.

Happy parenting.

Anaphylaxis Dear Parents,Across the college, we have a number

of children who suffer from life-threat-ening anaphylaxis. Although allergic reactions to food are common in chil-dren, severe life-threatening reactions are uncommon and deaths are rare. However, for children who suffer food-induced anaphylaxis, the result could be fatal. Chil-dren at King’s may have severe reactions to a variety of products, including, but not limited to, nuts, fish, milk, eggs and latex. While we realise we can not control everything, we ask you to think carefully when prepar-ing lunches and snacks for school, especially in the prep and lower primary departments, where children love to share. We ask specifically that if possible you avoid pack-ing peanut butter sandwiches or bars which contain nuts.

We thank you for your assistance in this matter. ~ Andrea Webb, College Nurse
