The B30 area has been growing in industry that is high in knowledge and innovation. Nearly half of the Barcelona Metropolitan Region’s R&D investment is to be found there. The R&D investment of some companies is the highest in Catalonia.

15 university centres

9 scientific or technology parks

The presence of major universities such as the UAB, the UPC, business school ESADE, technology parks and research centres in the B30 area provides it with significant logistics for driving the knowledge economy.

The B30 Association can build forums for governance and cooperation to drive knowledge transfer, training, information exchange and setting up facilities that foster applied research and business projects.

Interconnection between pure research centres and applied research centres associated with companies should be encouraged.

Industrial sector restructuring in the B30 areaIndustrial sector restructuring in the B30 area

B30 area municipalities have a major industrial structure in place.

Over recent years, a large part of the industrial sector in B30 area municipalities has adapted to the requirements of technological modernisation and has stepped up resources allocated to R&D investment. This means it is now in better shape in terms of competitiveness and exports.

The B30 Association needs to drive projects and measures to assist with the ongoing transformation of the production network by mentoring business to reinforce an industrial base which is highly innovative and extremely competitive internationally. - 9 -

The B30 area’s central position in the country means it is a crossroads for road and rail communications; from north to south along the Mediterranean Corridor and from east to west between Barcelona and inland areas.

The Port of Barcelona and El Prat and Sabadell airports are logistics facilities whose proximity boosts the area’s competitiveness.

The B30 has a series of urban stretches with their own identity that promotes social cohesion. They also combine employment and urban services.
