The Benny Wills Gala Dinner is an annual event raising vital funds for paediatric brain tumour research.

Nine Canberra businesses sponsored the inaugural Benny Wills Gala Dinner in 2010 and many more donated items for our auctions and raffle.

In 2010 the inaugural event raised almost $40K which enabled Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick to commence the Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Program.

Why not become a sponsor and be a part of this exciting new research program. $75K will fund a fulltime research assistant and $100K per year will enable the long-term running of this research program.

Together with Sydney Children’s Hospital, we work tirelessly to raise funds to protect the future of our children and help others.

Research is vital to helping change the outcome for chil-dren diagnosed with brain tumours.

WHO

ARE WE?

The Benny Wills Gala Dinner is an annual event raising funds to support the Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Program at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. The Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Pro-gram was established following the success of our inaugural fundraising event and honours Benny Wills who lost his twelve month battle with an inoperable brain-stem tumour in September 2009. Benny was just four when he passed away. Because of their location, it is impossible to biopsy a brain-stem tumour and consequently there is very little known about this type of cancer. To date the only treatment available is radiotherapy which temporarily shrinks the tumour and provides short-term relief from the associated symptoms. The Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Program is a the first of its kind in Australia and will focus on obtaining autopsy samples of Brain Stem Gliomas in children from around Australia to investigate their nature and seek an effective treatment in the hope that a cure can be found for this deadly disease. The program will be lead by Dr David Ziegler, Staff Specialist Oncologist at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. Brain tumour research is seriously under-funded and yet is crucial for saving the lives of the increasing number of children being diagnosed each year. At present there is no government funding for this research and the program relies solely on community sponsorship. Our objective is to fund the Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Program in the hope that we can help to change the outcome for future children diagnosed with brain-stem tumours.

Our goal is to find a cure for paediatric brain tumours.

In 2011 our goal is to raise at least $50K to support the initial phase of the Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Program.

In 2012 we aim to raise $75K which will fund a fulltime research assistant.

In 2013 we hope to raise $100K to support the long-term running of the Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Program.

In 2014 and beyond we hope to continue to support and provide for research in the hope of a cure.

WHAT

WE HOPE TO ACHIEVE

Being told that there is no hope for your child then having to watch them die slowly and painfully, is the most excruciating journey a parent can experience. What we hope to achieve by supporting the Benny Wills Brain Tumour Research Program is a cure for brain-stem tumours and hope of a future for parents and families of children diagnosed with these tumours. We believe our goal is achievable, but not without your support. We hope you will become a part of this exciting new research program and help us to find a cure for the deadly disease affecting more of our children each year.

ABOUT BRAIN TUMOURS

Brain tumours are the second most common cancer of childhood and unlike other childhood cancers, the incidence of brain tumours is increasing. While there have been many improvements in treatment, brain tumours remain amongst the most difficult childhood cancers to cure. Research is seriously under-funded and yet research focusing specifically on paediatric brain tumours is crucial to saving children’s lives. Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick through groundbreaking research, is leading the way in giving children diagnosed with brain tumours a much better chance of long-term survival. The Hospital relies solely on community funding for brain tumour research and rehabilitation.

Benny was four years old and 100cm tall when he passed away. His favourite colour was pink.

Families from Benny’s preschool and the Canberra community got together to create a magical fairy garden for Benny, somewhere he could go and spend time away from the doctors and the hospital.

Benny loved his family and friends but his favourite person in the whole world was his baby brother Tommy.

Benny’s dreams were to go to preschool, see real snow and play soccer. Because of the amazing support of our family, friends and Benny’s care team, he was able to do all these things.

Benny’s favourite TV shows were Charlie and Lola, Thomas the Tank Engine and Top Gear. His favourite movie was Disney Cars and he collected ALL the characters.

Benny loved painting and drawing and his picture of baby Benny and Mummy is our logo.

WHY

WE DO THIS

Benny was a bright, intelligent little boy with a smile that would light up the world and a terrific sense of humour. Benny wanted to be a policeman when he grew up, just like his daddy. On Friday 5 September 2008 at the age of 3, he was diagnosed with a diffuse pontine glioma, an inoperable brain-stem tumour. His prognosis, with treatment was twelve months. Benny underwent 25 sessions of radiotherapy at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick but we knew that this would merely buy us some time and temporarily improve Benny’s quality of life. Benny’s tumour took away his ability to eat, walk and talk and he lost his fight for life on Friday 11 September 2009, 53 weeks after he was diagnosed. Benny was the bravest person we know. Despite everything, he never once complained and he kept on smiling right up until the end of his life. Our decision to honour our son’s incredible courage by raising funds for brain tumour research was and continues to be driven by the hope that we can prevent children in the future from losing their lives to brain tumours and other families from experiencing this devastating loss. We didn’t know when we set about organising our inaugural event that the money would be used to fund a new research program or that the Sydney Children’s Hospital would honour our son by naming the program after him. All the proceeds raised by the Gala Dinner will go to support the research program now and into the future. We couldn’t change the outcome for Benny, but with your help we can change the outcome for future children diagnosed with brain tumours. Together, we can make a difference.
