The Business Value Proposition of
FOUNDATION Technology

End User Seminar 2010
• FOUNDATION Technology should be a consultative sale
• Operational and maintenance benefits, that’s where the key value proposition lies
• Benefits can be achieved in the engineering and installation phase
• For sales people, fieldbus projects are high value and require a greater than average service content, which can be very good for your business
• Attention must be given to the overall lifecycle of the project, you have to follow through.

What’s In It for The Sales Person?
• Again, higher value project versus 4-20 mA.
• More service required in the form of training, etc. particularly if you are a first timer
• Good potential for MAC project
• Will usually accompany a control system migration or upgrade project
• User must be willing to make the investment in fieldbus devices (at least for migration projects)
• When users go fieldbus, it is often part of a corporate wide initiative that involves multiple plants and locations

What’s In It for The User?
• Reduced engineering costs
• Reduced operational costs
• Reduced maintenance costs
• Reduced energy costs
• Better utilization of fewer personnel
• Better control

Why Fieldbus Projects Fail
• Picking the wrong engineering partner
• Lack of early planning in the FEED stage
• Lack of training
• Lack of a Plant Asset Management Strategy
• Lack of work processes necessary to make fieldbus work

The Importance of Early Involvement in the
FEED Phase
• The Success of Your Operations & Maintenance Strategy
Depends on the FEED Phase
• Fieldbus and its impact should be considered in this phase,
where it can create a more powerful return on investment

Fieldbus for New Projects and Modernization
• According to ARC, the installed base of process automation systems reaching the end of their useful life is $65 billion. Most of these are 20 years old or older.
• FOUNDATION Fieldbus is being chosen by more major end users as they begin to modernize their installed base.
• Users want to avoid a functional replacement.

Reduce Unplanned Shutdowns
• Unplanned Shutdown Accounts for 5 Percent of Production in the Process Industries
• One Unplanned Shutdown can Wipe Out your Entire Plant Profit for the Year
• Field Diagnostics Provide Advance Knowledge of Impending Problems
• FOUNDATION technology enables truly distributed and deterministic controls which are designed to function regardless of host issues
