camptulakadik.com The Campfire Summer 2020 Newsletter from Camp Tulakadik No one would have guessed that summer 2020 would look the way it does in regards to health concerns and current landscape of the world. Early on in this COVID season while we were deciding if camp was happening this season, I came across this quote: “We are the summer camp industry and we deal with uncertainty constantly. We are masters of management and champions of change. We are resilient and determined and we are used to adjusting plans. We do it every day. As long as it’s safe to run camp, there will be camp.” The key word there is “safe,” and after much prayer and deliberation on the board and with other camping professionals, it was decided it wouldn’t be safe to run camp this season and that the concern of campers being at greater risk while they were here was too great. Combined with the government restrictions, we had reservations as to the kind of camp experience one would have and how far that experience would be from what people have come to expect from Tulakadik. One day I was struck with the meaning of “Tulakadik” in this new world of physical distancing and masks. It is of Micmac origin meaning, “special meeting place.” If there is ever a time when we need a special meeting place it is now especially for young kids, a place where they could connect with an everlasting God who would instill comfort and meaning to them. Please continue to partner with us in prayer that God would guide us in decisions to make this meeting place effective in turning hearts toward Him. This leads us to the question (I’m sure many people have had) of what does the camp do this season? Our focus is on evaluating every part of what we do. We want to ensure that Tulakadik continues to direct people to meet with God and be the special meeting place that countless others have come to know. Alongside this evaluation are some much- needed maintenance projects that have been neglected for some time. We are fortunate to have some summer students still working, and we need people to partner financially to help upgrade the facilities. This will enable us to minister to kids for years to come. The CampfireSummer 2020

Newsletter from Camp Tulakadik

No one would have guessed that summer 2020 would look the way it does in regards to health concerns and current landscape of the world. Early on in this COVID season while we were deciding if camp was happening this season, I came across this quote:

“We are the summer camp industry and we deal with uncertainty constantly. We are masters of management and champions of change. We are resilient and determined and we are used to adjusting plans. We do it every day. As long as it’s safe to run camp, there will be camp.”

The key word there is “safe,” and after much prayer and deliberation on the board and with other camping professionals, it was decided it wouldn’t be safe to run camp this season and that the concern of campers being at greater risk while they were here was too great. Combined with the government restrictions, we had reservations as to the kind of camp experience one would have and how far that experience would be from what people have come to expect from Tulakadik.

One day I was struck with the meaning of “Tulakadik” in this new world of physical distancing and masks. It is of Micmac origin meaning, “special meeting place.” If there is ever a time

when we need a special meeting place it is now especially for young kids, a place where they could connect with an everlasting God who would instill comfort and meaning to them.

Alongside this evaluation are some much-needed maintenance projects that have been neglected for some time. We are fortunate to have some summer students still working, and we need people to partner financially to help upgrade the facilities. This will enable us to minister to kids for years to come.

Camper’s Story

Here are two stories from campers whose lives were changed at camp and illustrate the need for your support prayerfully and financially.

Sarah expressed to her Cabin Leader that her week of camp was really good for her because she made the decision to follow God. Before camp, she did not really understand what it meant to be a follower of Christ, but after that week she felt like everything had made so much more sense. She is excited for what God has in store for her life and the journey on which he is going to take her.

Faith came to camp for the first time not knowing anyone else or what to expect. While at camp, she made new friends and committed her life to Jesus Christ! Through Faith’s new experience, she left camp excited to share what she had learned with her friends.

These are a few of the many stories we hear every summer. Please partner with us to continue this ministry.

Financial Outlook

With all the changes, challenges and uncertainty the pandemic has brought it would be fair to say our financial outlook has a similar state. While some expenses have been lessened (for example summer staff wages and food), many of our monthly expenses such as insurance, power and mortgage still exist. In fact, it’s been said “You aren’t running summer camp so you probably don’t need as many finances” and this could not be further from the truth. The truth is, we are hoping to cover our monthly expenses and accomplish a number of projects to ensure a sustainable future for the camp where lives are changed for decades to come. In order to accomplish this, we need you.

Monthly expenses not including wages for our permanent part time staff are approximately $4,000/month (insurance, power, mortgage, phone, upkeep). If everyone receiving this letter considered giving a special gift in this season of $200 or setting up a monthly donation of $25 (see additional insert - Bright Lights) we would ensure our monthly expenses and wages were met with a little extra for projects and upkeep. A special gift during this season will ensure Camp Tulakadik continues to pursue excellence in Christ-centered camping that changes lives. A special gift will allow our summer students to have the materials and resources to improve the camp during this season of shutdown . A special gift will help ensure that when the gates open to campers again - they will experience the life changing power of Jesus at camp and see the many improvements that have taken place. A special gift will help the camp be a “meeting place” with more stories like those shared earlier in the letter.

As we continue to partner together, thank you for your faithful generosity and prayer support throughout the last 60 years. Thank you for considering a special gift in this season of the camp’s life. Thank you for investing in our future while we live in our current reality.

I hope this update gives you a picture of our financial landscape and the realities we face in light of Covid 19. Our reality is financially challenging. However throughout our history, God has provided through your support and in light of this we have a great picture of what camp can become for 2021. Please help us see that picture become a reality with a special gift that can be sent in the enclosed envelope, by e-transfer to [email protected] or on www.canadahelps.org by searchingCamp Tulakadik.

Projects

There is no end to things that need to be done at camp! From updates to the lodge to new programming elements, it seems as though the to-do list is always growing. We are asking that churches partner with us in completing specific projects at camp. This could be as simple as securing finances for a load of topsoil to installing a new roof.

Here are a few areas of focus for us this summer:• One major project is to put up new signs. Many

storms have taken a toll on the sign out by the main road, and we need to put up a new one. (Cost $4000)

• Fix the rain damage on the lake road. (Load of rocks $400)

• Install new shingles on two cabins. ($1700)• Staining Rockwall ($500)• Various program updates

The focus of these projects is to keep the camp updated and running for years to come. In order to reach more campers like the one you read about above. Please consider personally giving as these projects are not going to happen if they cant be funded.

If you would like to get a group together personally or through a church, please contact us.
