Dear Brothers and Sisters: Jesus always incurs resistance, especially in his home town of Nazareth. I checked the ending of last week’s gospel, which is the same as the beginning of

this week’s. And it is good that it repeats the word “today” for us since our tendency in to be thinking about tomorrow and we miss the day! The Word of God is fulfilled today, right now, if we listen in a deeper way when we hear the Scriptures proclaimed. We see right away the reaction of the crowd; at first they are amazed at the gracious words of Jesus and then they give in to their usual prejudices: isn’t this the son of Joseph, don’t we know him and his family, he never studied as a rabbi (nor did he go to an Ivy League school), so why should we believe him? Is our thinking like this, at times? Beginning with the word “Amen,” Jesus speaks as a prophet and addresses directly their human way of thinking. He says that the earlier prophets offered mercy not only to the Jews but to the gentiles as well, the outsiders. And they understood correctly that God’s mercy would be offered to all, not just to the chosen. This is what angered the people, his compliment to the gentiles. The Jews were so sure that they were God’s people that they despised the others. And here was this young Jesus, whom they all knew, preaching as if the gentiles were especially favored by God. It dawned on them that they were things in this new preaching that they did not like, and at times we might have the same reaction. Let us ask God to help us to be open to the Word of God, which is as powerful today as it was 2,000 years ago, and not to defend ourselves in front of it. The things we do not like or understand are a call to reflect on them; let’s not miss this opportunity!

WORLD MARRIAGE DAY

This year the World Marriage Day is celebrated on Sunday, February 10th at all the Masses. There will be a special blessing for couples at all Masses and a little something afterwards. When the sacrament of

marriage is under so much pressure in our times, it is important to help and acknowledge those who, with the help of God, are in a Christian marriage.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD (Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19). Psalm — I will sing of your salvation (Psalm 71). Second Reading — If I have all faith so as to move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing (1 Corinthians 12:31 — 13:13 [13:4-13]). Gospel — No prophet is accepted in the prophet’s hometown (Luke 4:21-30).

ST. JOSEPH’S CHOIR “When you sing, you pray twice,” said St. Augustine. So, if you like to sing, perhaps you’ll have at least two good reasons to resolve to join the St. Joseph’s Choir here in the new year. The

only requirement is desire – a desire to serve the church within this ministry; a desire to commit to rehearsals on most Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 and attend the choir Mass at 10 am on Sundays; and a

desire to grow as a singer and musician. We’re a friendly bunch who feel honored and blessed to continue the strong tradition of music at St. Joseph’s. Whether you’re a teenager or a bit older, we hope you’ll join us. You will be welcome.

ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY Our monthly meeting will be Monday, February 4th, at 7:30pm in the cafeteria.

Tickets will be available at the meeting and also after weekend masses for the Fish & Chips dinner on Ash Wednesday, February 13th from 5pm to 7pm. Please note that no tickets will be sold at the door. Call Marge at 201-933-2796 for more information. In addition, please bring your donations of soda to the

meeting. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Hostesses for the meeting will be Joan Accordino and Lorraine Joewono.

PROJECT LIFE & LIBERTY Postcard Signing Day! Next week our parish will join Catholics across the country in sending a message to Congress: Please respect life and religious freedom. You have the opportunity to sign postcards to your U.S. representative and two U.S. Senators. Please plan to participate in this important event! February 9th & 10th!

EASY WAYS OF GIVING Many parishioners are giving in a new way

that is helping them and us. It is electronic giving, which is very convenient and makes parish giving more regular and saves us the cost of envelopes. Direct Debit Giving is used by

more and more people to automatically transfer funds from their checking or savings account to the church's bank account. As you can see from our collection totals each week, over 75% comes from those who use envelopes. If you would like to help in this way please let us know. Soon we will have a simple way for you to sign up for envelopes if you wish. Those who use envelopes will receive a statement from the parish of their giving at year end.

FAITH FORMATION-SUNDAY CONNECTION First Holy Communion

Hearing these words usually sets in motion a myriad of memories. Young girls in white dresses and young boys in suits process down a church aisle. As they get to the front of church boys go the right and the girls to the left. Parents and family members are already seated in Church, eagerly waiting for this special occasion. The scene is set. Soon in the spring, many parishes will celebrate First Holy Communion. Formal preparation for this “Most Blessed” sacrament begins with the gathering of children. Our parish families of 2nd graders will meet this week. Discussions revolve around not just how to receive communion and first penance but more important why we receive communion and confess our sins. Getting ready to celebrate this sacrament is not an individual event. The children need the involvement of their family and the church family. The Mass is the central experience of the Catholic family. We come together to be fed at the table of the Lord, praying as the Body of Christ We gather, listen, receive and are sent to follow in the footsteps of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Pass it on…

WHITE ENVELOPES There are white visitor’s envelopes in the entrance of our church and they can be used by

those who wish to sign up to receive weekly envelopes from the company (D.P. Murphy) that provides this service to us.

The envelopes come every two months so be patient. For example, in December the January and February envelopes were sent out, so if you sign up in January you will not receive them until March. We also remind you of the automatic giving options that are available through your local bank. We thank you for your support of our parish. May the Lord bless you.

LIFE, MARRIAGE & RELIGIOUS FREEDOM The Bishops of the United States have asked us to work and pray against the threats in our society against life, marriage and religious freedom. They suggest five specific things to do: 1. Starting in January and continuing until Advent of 2013 the last Sunday of the month we will have a Eucharistic Holy Hour from 11-12 noon. 2. Families and individuals are encouraged to pray a daily rosary for this intention. 3. On Sundays and Holy days, the prayers of the faithful will include petitions for these needs. 4. Abstain from meat and fast on Fridays. 5. Celebrate a second Fortnight for Freedom at the end of June and beginning of July. This will also emphasize the need for conscience protection in light of the August 1, 2013 deadline for religious organizations to comply with the HHS mandate, as well as religious freedom concerns in others areas, such as immigration, adoption and humanitarian services. Let us continue to do our part during this Year of Faith and to know that we are not alone in this effort.

Giving thanks to God by returning a portion of the blessings God has given you.
