Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Bread of Life

Dear People and Friends of Saint Joseph’s,

What does it mean for Jesus to say that he is the bread of life? Think about your body and remember that your life began conceived in your mother’s womb. The difference between you at that moment of conception and you at this moment is the growth of all those years.

Your body is the product of everything you have eaten. Every cell of your body has developed from what you have put into your mouth. That hamburger and fries you ate last week now forms different parts of your body. Human di-gestion uses the food we eat and transforms it into the differ-ent cells of the body. When nutritionists say, “You are what you eat!” they literally mean it. The person who eats junk food has incorporated into himself what he has consumed. If you want to be healthy, you eat a balanced diet. Chapter 6 of the Gospel of John explains how the Lord Jesus forms and shapes us as God’s children. Jesus shapes us by all his teachings and by his powerful example, showing us how to live as a child of God. His teachings pre-sent the challenges of Christian life. We must put God first; we must love our neighbor as our self; we must take up our cross and follow him; we must turn away from selfishness and self-reliance and trust in the Lord. Jesus has spelled out very clearly the path we are to follow to have the fullness of life.

Yet, Jesus goes one step further. In the Gospel today

Jesus answered and said to them. . . “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

Without a doubt, Jesus satisfies every true longing and need. Without Jesus, there can be no life; with Jesus we have eter-nal life. Jesus provides the very substance that sustains a son or daughter of God.

When Jesus says, “I am the bread of life,” he is saying that he will be so closely united with us that he will fill every cell of our body. You are what you eat. If you want to be holy, to have peace, to be joyful, to be a child of God, eat right. Eat the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ, who feeds us with his Body and Blood in Holy Communion.

In the Peace of Christ,

Fr. Allan F. Wolfe
