Dear Parishioners and Extended Family Members, Praised be Jesus Christ! Well, it’s that time of the year! I am referring to Valentine’s Day. Much has been made of this holiday, so I thought that I would share with you one of its proposed origins. According to one of the legends, everything began with the Christian chaplain Valentine. The origin of Valentine's Day dates back to around 269 and the existence of the Roman Empire. Due to an extreme lack of soldiers for fights against enemies, the warlord was convinced that the stumbling block for his ambitious plans was marriages because a married legionary thought much less about the glory of the empire than about how to manage the family. That’s why, in order to save the warrior spirit in their soldiers, the emperor issued a decree, forbidding the soldiers to get married. However, the soldiers didn’t stop falling in love because of that decree. The history of Valentine's Day tells that, fortunately, there was a man who, despite the prohibition, started secretly performing marriage ceremonies for the legionaries. That man was a chaplain named Valentine. Apparently, this man was a real dreamer as his favorite pastimes were to be a go-between for quarreling lovers and to help the soldiers write beautiful love notes. When the emperor found out about this, he ordered the execution of the chaplain. The tragedy of the situation was also the fact that Valentine was also in love. The day before his death, the chaplain wrote a goodbye letter to the beloved one, where he told about his feelings and signed it, "Your Valentine." The date of the execution coincided with the Roman celebration in honor of Juno, the goddess of love, February 14. Again, this is one of a number of legends. Since none of them can be substantiated, St. Valentine was removed from the Church’s calendar. While this is the case, he still rules in many a heart. I think that we can all agree that it is important to celebrate love, romantic or otherwise.
Gratefully yours in Christ, Fr. Steve
from This Week In Church Signs: Do not criticize your wife’s judgment - see whom she married.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
Have you ever thought about becoming Catholic? Would you like to know more about God and the Church? Or, are you already baptized but still lack the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Confirmation? If so, RCIA is for
you! RCIA is a process of learning about and experiencing the Catholic faith with others in a friendly, small-group setting. It can lead to full membership in the Church through the Sacraments, but is also an open-ended process of asking questions and exploring. Come, discover what you've been missing! If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact Fr. Gregory directly or call our parish offices.
The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated immediately following the Mass on
Saturday, February 29 at 4pm at St. Jude. The primary aim of the Sacrament of the Sick is the
healing of those who are sick. It may involve physical healing. It may involve spiritual healing. It may promise
restoration. Or, it may guide one to resurrection into God’s kingdom. That belongs to God to decide.
The Sacrament of Anointing is open to all who have health problems due to illness or
age, or have impending surgery. Through the Sacrament of Anointing, the
Church supports the sick and elderly in their struggle against illness and continues
Christ’s work of healing. The sacrament expresses the sharing that
each one of us has in the suffering of others. Even if you have participated in the past,
we urge you to join us for this moving liturgical event.
Friends and relatives are encouraged to attend this communal celebration.

February 9 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Winter’s darkness still enfolds us and so the theme of light and darkness in today’s readings is very apropos for us to
ponder. In the first reading, Isaiah gives us an antidote, reminding us that performing works of mercy can bring light into the darkness. In the Gospel, “Jesus said to his
disciples… You are the light of the world…. your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." Are your words and
actions pointing people to Jesus? If they are not, what will you do to be a light in the darkness this week?
Exploring the Sunday Reading Every Wednesday morning after the
9:00AM Mass at St. Jude, a group meets informally in a small room
off the sanctuary to explore the upcoming Sunday scripture
readings. No preparation needed. All are welcome-
Please join us for coffee and sharing!

EDWARD PRAYER REQUESTS: Just a reminder, that there is a binder on the table in the Narthex in which you are invited to place the names of all those for whom you ask us to pray. You are most welcome to enter names in this booklet in order that prayers may be offered for your loved ones.

St. Edward/St. Jude Book Discussion Group The Father’s Son
Despite a traumatic and difficult childhood, 39-year-old Boston executive, David Kelly, seems to have it all. While building a life of achievement, material success, and professional respect, an
unexpected friendship with Tom Fitzpatrick starts him on an emotional and
courageous journey that allows him to confront the truth of his past and the impact it has had on his life and
relationships. The Father’s Son (written by local author, Jim Sano) is a highly engaging and inspirational story that offers insights into Catholic teachings and will make you think about faith, family, friendship, forgiveness, redemption, love, and truth,
and may prove to profoundly impact how you look at life itself.

will be cancelled.
Guatemala Mission/Vision Trip, Let's Support the Building of a School:
This June, fifteen St Edward’s high school
students will travel to Guatemala with Cross Catholic Outreach to help build a school in
Santa Rosa de Lima, an impoverished area where hundreds of
students are taught in a single classroom crumbling building. Education provides the best path out of poverty. The new school
will allow the children in Santa Rosa de Lima and the surrounding area a better chance to
end the vicious cycle of poverty, provide them with access to a better future, and a reason to hope.
As a group, they need to raise $7,000. The students offered to donate any funds they earn through
babysitting.
If you are looking for a sitter, please consider hiring one of our mission trip teens: they will donate their time,
and whatever you would otherwise pay your sitter will be donated to the Guatemala School Project.
Babysitting checks or donations can be made out to St. Edward with "Guatemala School Project" in the memo
section of the check. Please email Tricia Buzgo:
[email protected] with St. Edward’s Sitters in the subject line to coordinate a babysitter.
One Family Knitters received this lovely thank you note from
The Nativity School in Worcester.
