Sweetheart Dinner and Dance Saturday, February 14

Bring your sweetheart to the Sweetheart Dinner and support the Mission to Mexico all at the same time. Tickets are being pre-sold for $15 at the Information Center or can be purchased at the door for $20. Childcare is provided. The youth and Mission to Mexico travelers are serving.

Choice of Dinner: Filet Mignon, Salmon or Chicken Breast

All are welcome: singles, couples and groups. Come support those going on Mission to Mexico by enjoying a delightful evening of tasty food and dancing!

An Invitation to A Spiritual Journey from

Lent to Pentecost— 90 Days of Prayer and Discernment

Beginning on February 22, the first Sunday of Lent, you are invited to join in a Journey of Prayer for your own faith journey, to share and pray with others in our church family and to pray for the journey of our church, Salem First Chris-tian, into the future years.

We will be doing this Journey of Prayer in Triads—3 people to a group—who covenant to meet 7 times (every other week), at a time of their choosing, from Lent to Pentecost (February 22-May 24) to pray for each other and for the church. Ecclesiastes 4:12 says, “A cord of three strands is not easily bro-ken.”

This will be an opportunity to grow in your own spiritual life and to pray and listen for God’s vision and plans for our church’s mis-sion and ministry. Each triad meeting will have scripture and reflective questions to share and pray together.

Preparing for Week of Compassion from the Serving Committee Colorado: After the floods when the rains began in Colorado in 2013, no one expected what was to come. From communities as far north as Fort Collins to as far south as Colorado Springs, floods rushed through towns large and small. In addition to provid-ing grants to help those who were displaced, Week of Compassion and Disciples Volunteering began a con-versation with First Christian Church, Loveland, Colorado, about how to best partner and respond in affected communities. Though the long Colorado winter slowed down any organized response to the widespread flood damage, summer soon meant that local long‐term recovery groups could begin their preparations.

Through the support of WOC and Disciples Volun-teering, FCC Loveland adapted its facilities in order to host volunteers, forged relationships with commu-nity leaders, and local recovery organizations, and now stands ready to be part of the recovery of so many affected communities across the Central Rocky Mountain Region. Empowering these communities hit by disasters and empowering congregations to minister and respond: that is the work of Week of Compassion. That is how we can help these commu-nities reach a fair balance.

A Warm Welcome to Our Newest Members On January 25 Mabel Polley came forward along with Norma Stofiel at the 8:30 am service to trans-fer their membership to Salem First Christian Church. Mabel and Norma have both been attending for quite some time. Mabel first started coming with her late husband, then began bringing her friend Norma. Norma is now working with our Financial Resource and Counting Team. Also on January 25, during the 11:00 am service, Mert & Melba Phillips transferred their member-ship to Salem First Christian Church. They began worshipping with us a couple of months ago and almost immediately felt like they were "home."

Congratulations to Natalie Clark and proud parents Bob and Linda Olson! Natalie found out she is admitted into the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) National Benevolent As-sociation’s 10-month XPLOR program, which begins in August, 2015!

Through NBA XPLOR program, residents explore lives of faith and justice. Natalie and other NBA resi-dents will work hands-on in and among neighbor-hoods to empower local mission efforts while raising the awareness to systems of injustice. They will ex-plore spiritual discernment on vocation, striving through spiritual disciplines to discern their spiritual purpose. They will explore Disciples Leadership De-velopment, living out their Disciples identity, unleashing leadership capacity.

Natalie will find out in April where she will be serv-ing: North Hollywood, California; San Francisco, California; Texas, or Arizona.

Natalie will complete her senior year as an English major at Willamette University in the fall of 2016.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Thank you for the donations for our Helping Hands cupboard. We appreciate everyone who has helped our kids help our community.

And a big thank you to Kim Resch, Alex Rux and CJ Dyer for helping with January’s JYF event. We learned about a community who discovered generos-ity by learning to work together in the story, “Stone Soup,” and made our own version of “stone soup” for our lunch. The kids contributed to and then prepared their soup. While the soup was cooking, they worked together to make bird feeders for God’s creatures and people feeders for our neighbors. The kids decorated 15 bags with messages like, “Jesus loves you” and “God loves everyone,” then filled them with snacks for our hungry neighbors. I am very proud of our kids for helping to spread God’s love and taking care of His creatures.

Sunday School News: Did you know that Mrs. Kim works every Sunday to teach our young ones the Lord’s Prayer? Jesus taught us to pray in this way, and Ms. Kim teaches it to every Cherub who comes to her class. When the children can say the Lord’s Prayer, they earn a special cross pin. This is a tradi-tion Mrs. Lucille Battin started when she was a Sun-day school teacher for all her blessed years and Ms. Kim continues this tradition today. Ask your young ones to pray with you. It’s a good thing.

We are all precious in His sight because we are all God’s children. Thank you for letting me love these children.

Ramblings from Riane

Youth Update: Last Sunday, the youth began a series on prayer. Over the next few months, we will be exploring the importance and meaning behind prayer, learning and practicing various styles of prayer, as well as partici-pating in prayer triads each week. They will learn more about each other, gain confidence praying for others in a group, and grow in their personal prayer life. I am excited for this opportunity and am looking forward to watching the youth grow in their personal relationship with God through the power of prayer! Book Readers: The February book to read is "Undaunted" by Chris-tine Caine. At the "Women of Faith" revival, this book was recommended. Join us for the discussion of this book on Thursday, February 19, at 1:00 pm in the Library. All are welcome.

Check It Out! Knowing that Dr. Dornhecker was going to speak about the history of the Christian Church, I had set out the historical books of our Church on the back corner bookcase for your reading convenience. Sur-prisingly, the words that struck me from Dr. Dorn-hecker’s lips of those caught up in the 19th century movement founding the Christian Church was this – “They were longing to see Jesus as a more powerful authority in the Church.” Wow! – DYNAMITE!

Isn’t that what we are longing for in this Church and isn’t this what prompted the formation of prayer tri-ads? We are longing to see Jesus’ authority in First Christian Church and we are willing to join together and spend time in prayer to hear, see and perceive the power and transformation brought about by calling upon Jesus. Check out the books on the history of the Christian Church and the books on prayer displayed all over the library this month.
