“Homecoming — Healing the Homesickness of the Soul”

Fall Sermon Series

Whether we realize it or not, deep down we all yearn to come home to God. This is what St. Augustine was referring to when he wrote,

“Our heart is restless until it finds rest in Thee.” There is an empty spot in our hearts and lives that only God can fill.

Come explore coming home to God in Worship this Fall — October 13: “Come on Home to Healing” (Luke 13: 10-17)

October 20: Pastor Matt preaching October 27: “Come on Home to Generosity” (Luke 6: 45-49)

Home Street Middle School

Outside Basketball Courts

Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary effort of the people of The United Methodist Church, putting our faith into action to end preventable deaths by Malaria in Africa, especially the

death of a child or a mother. Malaria kills an estimated 800,000 people a year. When Imagine No Malaria was launched in 2010, a child died every 30 seconds from Malaria.

Today, thanks to the commitment of people like you and me, deaths have fallen by 50%. A donation of just $10 will provide a bed net and education to a family.

Learn more at IMAGINENOMALARIA.ORG or at bishopumc.org .

Combine a love of basketball with changing the world — Shoot hoops and raise funds to fight Malaria on the continent of Africa! Join the fight to eliminate this killer disease by 2015

through bed nets, prevention, treatment, education, communication and advocacy.

We will gather on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at 1 pm at Home Street Middle School — outside Basketball Courts. Please bring your basketball (some basketballs will be available.)

Participants will be divided into age categories and will attempt 25 free throw shots each. Open to Elementary, Middle School, High School students (male & female) and to all Adults.

Friendly competitions encouraged and side-line cheerleaders are welcome!

Winners in each category will be recognized with certificates. The real winners will be families in Africa whose lives will be saved with receiving the

protecting bed nets and the work done through the Imagine No Malaria campaign.

To participate — get a donation envelope from the Church office.

Get sponsors and donations from family and friends. Practice your free throw shooting, grab your basketball

and join us Sunday afternoon, October 6 at 1 pm at Home Street Middle School.

To donate — Donate online at bishopumc.org

(click on Shoot for No Malaria link) OR Sponsor Pastor Kathleen (a donation per free throw

she makes — best of 25 shots. So $1 per shot could be donation of $25)

Pastor Kathleen’s Corner

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." — John 3:16

Quick Quiz -- If you were going to memorize only one verse of Scripture, which one? It would most likely be John 3:16. It is the verse most often heard in the simplicity & beauty of a little child's voice, proudly reciting it from memory. It shows up on large placards at football games & other sporting events. This is a verse spoken by many older saints as they breathed their final breath. It is the entire gospel in a nutshell — the gospel in one verse. John 3:16 has been referred to as “salvation’s formula.” It contains four very insightful truths —revealing salvation’s cause, its cost, its condition, and its consequence.

Salvation's Cause "For God so loved the world" The motivating factor behind God’s redemptive plan for every man and woman is His love for us. God not only loves us, He SO loves us! God’s love for you is the motivating cause of salvation.

Salvation's Cost "that He gave His only begotten Son" Our salvation, the free pardoning of our sin, and the promise of abundant and eternal life in Christ did not come without cost. Freedom is never free, Jesus not only spoke of His love for us, "but God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). Our salvation in Christ came at a great cost: God "gave His only begotten Son."

Salvation's Condition "that whoever believes in Him" Salvation is not spelled “d-o,” but “d-o-n-e.” It is already purchased for us with the blood of Christ on the cross. Our part is to believe, to transfer our trust from ourselves and our own efforts to Jesus’ finished work on the cross of Calvary.

Salvation's Consequence "should not perish but have everlasting life" What a consequence! What a promise! This comes not from our own human efforts, morals, or good deeds. The promise is that God’s love reaches down to us, was made possible through the payment of Christ, and is received by grace through faith alone; believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. Good news! Take a look at John 3:16 again and commit it to memory. Think about the fact that love is always something you DO and remember that “God so loved the world that He GAVE.” Yes, God knows you, loves you, and has a wonderful plan for your life!

Blessings! Pastor Kathleen

Our Missionary Rev. Paul Jeffrey

Paul is coming to town — will be here in Bishop on Thursday, November 14!

“Every three years, United Methodist missionaries take a few weeks to visit congregations that

support our ministry. During October and November, I'll be on the road doing that, sharing some images from where I’ve been and talking with you about what mission means today in your

community and around the world. I look forward to being with you all.” — Paul

Join us on Thursday, November 14 at 6 pm for a very special time with our missionary, the Rev. Paul Jeffrey!

He will be sharing his powerful photos and stories from around the world and challenging us about what mission means today!

Great program to invite friends (esp. those who love photography or media!)

We’ll start with a Baked Potato Bar Dinner (with all the toppings!) at 6 pm and Paul will speak right afterward. Join us in the Methodist Center.

Check out Paul’s blog & photo gallery “Global Lens” at kairosphotos.com/blog

With fall seemingly upon us, we know that Christmas will be just

around the corner … YIKES! Now is the time to think about

helping with Advent activities and especially the decorating of our sanctuary. If you are willing to

participate in the planning for this special time, please notify Pastor

Kathleen, Donna Turner or Sue Camphouse. Thank you

for prayerfully considering this responsibility.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

“For you created my inmost being;

You knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

— Psalm 139:13

Pastor Kathleen shared this passage in “Time with the Children” on Sunday, September 22 — as well as sharing

some updated information about our Prayer Shawl Ministry, coordinated by our “Knit Wits.”

Here are the facts and figures: Prayer Shawls have been created and blessed for

50 church members and 73 persons beyond our church. That is 123 prayer shawls total!

Prayer Shawls have gone to Maine, Oklahoma, Iowa, Virginia, Pennsylvania and all over California.

And after Worship that Sunday, 2 more prayer shawls were requested and blessed

and headed out to bring our prayers to others! (If you are counting, the new total is 125 prayer shawls!)

To find out more about this ministry

or to request a prayer shawl for someone in need, contact Donna Turner or Penny Kehus.

UMCOR, providing Christmas gifts to local children in need,

and two local ministries overseen by the United Methodist Social Services

at the various organizations’ tables. Printed cards will be available

Keep the Walk to Emmaus Weekends In Your Prayers

The Walk to Emmaus is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. It is sponsored through “The Upper Room” and the General Board of

Discipleship. Please keep the upcoming Weekends in your prayers El Shaddai Men’s Weekend – October 10-13 and El Shaddai Women’s Weekend – October 17-20

Pastor Kathleen will be one of the Clergy on the Women’s Weekend. The Walks take place at Wesley UMC in Riverside.

Additional information can be found at www.upperroom.org/emmaus

Interested in learning more? Please talk to Pastor Kathleen. Several folks from our church have participated in the Walk to Emmaus

and would love to share their experiences with you!

Carpet Fund Update — We reached our Goal!

Our Adult Lounge will be receiving new carpeting in mid-October! (as well as the hallways on either side of the

main entrance into the Methodist Center.) It is a high quality, commercial carpet that should last.

Our thanks to all who donated — we received $3,502.00 for this project. Thank you for your support and generosity.

NEXT PROJECT! Our Trustees and Combined Committee continue to explore options for replacing the flooring in the Methodist Center. Even though the carpet was

commercially cleaned at the end of 2012, it is showing multiple spots and stains from the heavy usage of our facility over the years.

At the September meeting, it was decided to proceed with replacing the Methodist Center carpet with a commercial epoxy floor coating.

Durability, ease of cleaning and appearance are the main priorities for this next project. The estimate for this is $13,000. Based on the size of the Methodist Center,

this breaks down to $35 per square yard.

In October, a poster will go up and you will be invited to donate a square yard (or multiple square yards!) Samples and pictures of the epoxy coating will

also be available. When all the funding is in, we will proceed with this project.

Like to contribute to this project?

Please make your donation out to the church and designate Flooring Fund. Your input is appreciated (as well as donations!) Thanks!

Want to be blessed? Join the Choir! Or the Bell Choir!

Choir Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7 pm in the Sanctuary. More info? Email Chris Lanane, Choir Director, at lanane,[email protected]

No audition needed — All are welcome!

Hosanna Ringers Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 4 pm in Sanctuary. Michael MacArthur is our Interim Director.

The Bells will play in Worship on October 20.

Come learn what it is possible for your health care to look like at the October event of the UMW,

featuring a program entitled

Who Needs Good Health Care?

This will be an introductory overview about a health care system that would provide

comprehensive, quality, cost-effective health care for all California residents as proposed in SB810.

All church and community members are invited to attend this program to be held on

Tuesday, October 8, 2013, at 6:30 P.M.

Refreshments will be served at 6:30 P.M. At 7:00 P.M. the program will begin,

and will include a short video presentation, followed by a question and answer period provided by Jeanne Ertle, Vice Chair of California OneCare, who will be with us

by telephone from Chico, California.

You are encouraged to attend and invite your friends and neighbors

to this educational program.

Sometimes the issues United Methodist Women study have “hot” political aspects to them. That means we need to be even more considerate of each other’s viewpoint, whenever we discuss a hot topic. With this in mind, I want to assure you that our October event (see article elsewhere) is intended to be for information only. If you’ve ever wondered what people mean when they use the phrase “single payer insurance,” you might want to attend. We also plan to have some material available that will help you find answers to questions you might have on how the Affordable Health Care Act will affect you.

Meanwhile, UMW continues to help us develop our faith. In the current issue of response magazine, the Bible Study is on John 9, in which Jesus “challenged the status quo when injustice was considered normal.” Copies of this magazine will be in the Adult Lounge soon.

UMW helps give others hope, through supporting UMCOR, in places such as Colorado and Syria. We’ve heard more in the news about both places recently, because of the terrible flooding in Colorado and the use of Sarin gas in Syria. The conflict in Syria, according to New World Outlook, has claimed over 70,000 lives and caused great suffering. In Syria UMCOR is providing hygiene and school kits to communities through November, 2013. We know that UMCOR will continue to provide assistance to those in Colorado in the months (perhaps years) to come.

Now you have the opportunity to be love in action by signing up for one of the “Faith In Action” projects scheduled for Sunday, October 6th!

More UMW News…. UMW Spiritual Development: Sue Camphouse

As I write this we are in VA visiting seminary classmates of our daughter and on our way to MD to participate in Super Storm Hurricane Sandy repair and rebuild projects. We have had the privilege of visiting several pastors and a bunch of churches. I have felt the presence of the Holy Spirit; I have been blessed by loving relationships; I have been observing and learning and growing.

I have been thinking about Spiritual Development. In the institutional setting – our UM churches – we focus on forming disciples in order to make/develop disciples of others. Spiritual Development is a way of intentionally growing one’s faith. As Methodists we look at individual spiritual development in five ways. These are: FELLOWSHIP – corporate relationships, WORSHIP – individual and group experiences, PRAYER – the “ACTS” Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication, STUDY – reading God’s Word, and SERVICE – mission, outreach, and sacrificial giving.

What a joy it has been to be around others all across

our country engaged in spiritual development. (We have basically been following Interstate Hwy #40 east.) We have been made aware of those feeding the poor in towns here in the US and those going to India to do the same. We visited a health clinic and a preschool. We have been encouraged by the ways we have seen God’s love being shared. We have been able to participate in several different formats of worship services. We have learned about fundraising. We look forward to meeting more folks next week when we reach our destination in MD. We just found out that there will be missioners there from Brad and Pastor Diane Mettam’s new congre-gation in Eureka, CA. Sometimes our world seems very small indeed.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in

Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” -- Acts 1:8
