From the PrincipalMs Belinda Provis

It was one of the highlights of my professional learning experience to participate in 2015 in a masterclass in Singapore with internationally-renowned academic, Prof. Yong Zhao, and so I am delighted that All Saints’ College is now, as a result of that experience, hosting Prof. Zhao as our academic-in-residence next week!

Known across the world for his expertise in educational reform, Prof. Zhao is particularly acclaimed for his work in several areas, including creativity and entrepreneurship, technology in education, Chinese-language learning, and globalisation and education.

We are very much looking forward to having Prof. Zhao work with our students, staff and parent communities and, in particular, seeking his feedback on our recent work in innovation and entrepreneurship, for which the College is becoming increasingly well known across Perth and Australia.

In the masterclass in which I participated in 2015, Prof. Zhao focused on why schools need to be fostering entrepreneurs – young people ready for a future community, an innovation-economy – rather than merely preparing students to become employees, which requires a compliance and an outdated knowledge-economy mindset.

Prof. Zhao spoke about the need for schools to be fostering creative thinkers who see problems as opportunities, and who demonstrate highly refined social and emotional skills.

In relation to this, I was reading recently an article about the work of another educational expert, Tony Wagner, who – following comprehensive interviews with industry leaders and a study of the global workforce – has identified seven “survival skills” of the future, “skills and mindsets young people absolutely need in order to meet their full potential”.

To read Wagner’s report, click HERE.

I look forward to sharing with you, next Thursday, 27 July, our special evening with the very special Prof. Yong Zhao! To secure your seat, click HERE.

Professor Yong Zhao - Thursday, 27 July – 7.00pm – 8.30pm in the CPA

An internationally renowned scholar, author, speaker and Foundation Distinguished Professor from the University of Kansas, Prof. Zhao will work with our community, focusing on how we best nurture within our students the essential 21st century skills of innovation and entrepreneurship, and how we cultivate independent thinkers who can make a positive difference in a globalized society. In addition to working with our students and staff, Prof Zhao will host this special evening with parents. We urge you to come along and hear from this most engaging and compelling speaker.

TOPIC: What skills will our sons/ daughters need in the future? How can we best support them in developing their creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit?

SYNOPSIS: How can we prepare our students to be global, creative, and entrepreneurial? What kind of schools cultivate these talents? Massive changes brought about by population growth, technology, and globalization demand that we create opportunities for “mass entrepreneurship”. Entrepreneurship extends to social entrepreneurship, policy entrepreneurship, and intrapreneurship. To cultivate these creative talents requires a paradigm shift in education—from employee-oriented education to entrepreneur-oriented education, from prescribing children’s education to supporting their learning, and from reducing human diversity to a few employable skills to enhancing individual talents.

This is a FREE event – please book by clicking HERE.

The third All Schools Regatta of the 2017 rowing season brought with it somewhat trying conditions which tested all of the crews rowing on Saturday, 15 July. The All Saints’ rowers were more than up to the challenge and represented the College and themselves very well. With a slightly reduced squad, there were fewer crews and a number of first-time combinations on the water, which allowed the rowers to expand their rowing experiences. Many of the younger members of the squad volunteered to row in crews in older age-categories, and their courage and willingness to support their teammates was commendable.

At the end of the day we finished with some pleasing results, with specials mentions going to the following who took home medals for winning their respective events:

It was great to see our students and parents return on Tuesday after the three-week holiday break and join teachers for Three Way Interviews. The teachers were pleased with the manner in which the students approached the interviews, taking the opportunity to think carefully about their learning and set future goals.

For all class groups, the beginning of the term includes revisiting the class Code of Conduct to confirm the group’s culture and agreement of behaviour. As part of this, our College values are considered in the context of the group and the increased maturity that the students have as the year has progressed. This is an important process in welcoming everyone back after the holidays, particularly in welcoming any new students. A sense of belonging is important for every student in order for them to optimise learning and enjoy positive wellbeing. Our commitment to inclusion and celebration of diversity of culture, gender, learning styles and abilities is recognised in each class charter.

We are looking forward to our inaugural Wellbeing Day in the Junior School, which will take place on Thursday, 3 August 2017. This will be a day in which students and staff participate in activities that aim to promote and teach how to look after their wellbeing. More details will be included in the Junior School email next week.

The Years 3 – 6 Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Morning, is on Friday, 18 August 2017. This year we will be trialling a slightly different format. At the conclusion of the Assembly in the Centre for Performing Arts at 9.30am, guests will have morning tea, following which guests will be guided to visit classes and studios, and then be free to leave when ready. We are looking forward to warmly welcoming our grandparents and special guests to the College on this day. Please note: RSVPs are essential for this event.

There are seven new job clusters and more than 1 000 different occupations in Australia. This might seem like a bewildering choice for a young person starting their career, however many of these jobs are related in the sense that they involve similar skills, day-to-day tasks and work environments.

By using a first-time methodology for analysing millions of job advertisements, these occupations can actually be grouped into just seven clusters.

2017 CHAMPION SCHOOLS ORIENTEERING

On Wednesday, 21 June selected Year 9 students and all Year 11 Outdoor Education students competed at the Western Australian Champion Schools Orienteering held at Whiteman Park. All of the students were outstanding representatives for All Saints’ College. This was highlighted by their performances and behaviour on what proved to be a challenging and successful day.

Year 9 students competed in pairs, navigating around a 3.5 kilometre course, whilst Year 11 students competed individually, tackling a 4.0 kilometre course as part of their assessment for General Outdoor Education. Students used a variety of skills taught in Outdoor Education – such as compass navigation, taking a bearing, thumbing the map and using prominent features on a map – to help them complete the course as efficiently as possible. The following results are a pleasing reflection of the depth of students’ knowledge and their ability to apply it in pressured outdoor environments. The results below show those students who finished in the top 10 in their division.

YEAR 11 OUTDOOR EDUCATION NAvIGATION EXPEDITION

On Wednesday, 14 June both Year 11 Outdoor Education classes set off on a challenging and rewarding overnight expedition into the bush roughly an hour and a half south east of Perth. Students worked extremely hard throughout Term 2 to plan and prepare to practice their leadership skills and lead the entire group through different sections of the expedition. The students successfully navigated their way through some very dense terrain to various areas using their maps, bearings, pacing and natural features as a guide throughout the two days.

The group enjoyed the magnificent views from the top of Mt Vincent, Mt Cuthbert and Mt Randall. Using marker trees, access roads and the Bibbulmun Track as markers, all students rotated through the various roles to ensure their group was successful in their navigating. Throughout the trip, each small group had the opportunity to brief the rest of the group as to the upcoming logistics for their particular section, practising their communication skills and displaying all of the planning, preparation and knowledge they had worked on throughout the term.

There were some outstanding performances throughout the two days, and all students are congratulated on their performance. The entire group did extremely well, demonstrating leadership skills, effective group functioning and survival and navigation skills in an outdoor environment, making the expedition a very successful one.

YEAR 7 GRANDPARENTS’ AND SPECIAL FRIENDS’ MORNING

Grandparents and special friends play a very important role in our community and we would like to invite them to a special morning at All Saints’ College.

This is an exciting opportunity for grandparents and special friends to spend some time with their grandchild in Year 7 and share a bit of what life is like for them at school.

We are very conscious that many families may not have grandparents nearby who are able to share in the children’s daily experiences. If this is the case in your family, please feel free to invite an aunt, uncle or close friend.

WHEN: Friday, 25 August 2017 (Commencing at 9.15am and concluding at 11.00am)

WHERE: Centre for Performing Arts, All Saints’ College (Parking in the Chapel car park through Gate 3 off Ewing Ave)

RSVP essential before Friday, 18 August – please visit www.trybooking.com/292825

An approximate plan of the morning is as follows:9.15am – 9.50am Special Assembly: Centre for Performing Arts

9.50am – 10.20am Shared Morning Tea with the students: Centre for Performing Arts Foyer

10.20am – 11.00am Classroom visits and tour
