Psalmody and Canticle

The Cantor sings the Antiphon, then it is repeated by the choir; the verses are then chanted, alternating between women and men; the * sign indicates a pause. At the end of each psalm, all stand and sing together “Glory be to the Father…” The choir concludes each psalm with the Antiphon.

Psalm 120 (121)

Antiphon: Dominus custodite ab omni malo, custodiat animam tuam, Dominus. (The Lord will guard you from every evil. He will guard your soul.)

Women: I lift up my eyes to the mountains * (pause) from where shall come my help? Men: My help shall come from the Lord * who made heaven and earth.

Women: May he never allow you to stumble! * Let him sleep not, your guard. Men: No, he sleeps not nor slumbers, * Israel’s guard.

The people stand and bow

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit *

The people rise

All: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Antiphon: Dominus custodite ab omni malo, custodiat animam tuam, Dominus. (The Lord will guard you from every evil. He will guard your soul.)

All sit. A period of silent reflection is observed

Psalm 129 (130)

Antiphon: Si iniquitates observaveris, Domine: Domine, quis sustinebit? (If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive?)

Women: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, * (pause) Lord, hear my voice! Men: O let your ears be attentive * to the voice of my pleading.

Women: If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, * Lord, who would survive? Men: But with you is found forgiveness: * for this we revere you.

The people stand and bow

All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit *

The people rise

All: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Antiphon: : Si iniquitates observaveris, Domine: Domine, quis sustinebit? (If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt, Lord, who would survive?)

All sit. A period of silent reflection is observed

Canticle: Philippians 2: 6-10 Antiphon: Sicut Pater suscitat mortuos et vivificat, sic et Filius quos vult vivificat. (As the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to anyone he chooses.)

Cantor: Though he was in the form of God * Jesus did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped.

Choir: He emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

Cantor: And being found in human form * he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.

Choir: Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name.

Reading Romans 5:5-11 The Rev. Dr. Benton Martin Pastor, Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church

Brothers and sisters: Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. For Christ, while we were still helpless, died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. How much more then, since we are now justified by his Blood, will we be saved through him from the wrath. Indeed, if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son, how much more, once reconciled, will we be saved by his life. Not only that, but we also boast of God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

The people remain seated.

Anthem

Sanctus (Requiem Op. 9) Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cæli et terra gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: heaven and earth are full of thy glory: Hosanna, in the highest. Blessed is he that commeth in the name of the Lord: Hosanna, in the highest.

Reflection The Most Rev. Gregory J. Hartmayer, OFM Conv. Roman Catholic Bishop of Savannah

Canticle Magnificat (Song of Mary) Eighth Psalm Tone falso bordone by Grassi Sung by the quartet

My soul glorifies the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God, my Savior. He looks on his servant in her lowliness; henceforth all ages will call me blessed. The Almighty works marvels for me. Holy his name! His mercy is from age to age, on those who fear him. He puts forth his arm in strength and scatters the proud-hearted.He casts the mighty from their thrones and raises the lowly. He fills the starving with good things, sends the rich away empty. He protects Israel, his servant, remembering his mercy, the mercy promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his sons for ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The people stand and bow Quartet: Glória Patri, et Fílio, et Spirítui Sancto,

The people rise Quartet: Sicut erat in princípio, et nunc, et semper, et in sæcula sæculórum. Amen.

The people remain standing.

Prayers and intercessions

Rev. Dr. Martin: Let us pray to Christ who gives us the hope that our mortal bodies will become like his in glory. People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.

Dr. Martin: Christ, Son of the living God, you raised your friend Lazarus from the dead; grant life and glory to the faithful departed, redeemed by your precious blood. People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.

Dr. Martin: Compassionate Savior, you wiped away all tears when you gave back to the widow of Naim her only son; comfort those who mourn because the one they love has died. People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.

Dr. Martin: Christ, our Redeemer, destroy the reign of sin in our mortal bodies; let us not receive the wages of death but the reward of eternal life. People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.

Dr. Martin: Christ, our Savior, look on those who live without hope and do not know you; let them believe in the resurrection and the life of the world to come. People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.

Dr. Martin: You restored sight to the man born blind and opened the eyes of his faith; reveal your face to the dead who have not seen your glory. People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.

Dr. Martin: For those who have gone before us, marked with the sign of faith, especially those for whom we now pray: Silence

Dr. Martin: We pray: People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.

Dr. Martin: Lord, be merciful to us when we leave this earthly dwelling; make for us a home in heaven that will last for ever. People: Lord, you are our life and our resurrection.
