Technological quantum leap needed

• Increasing global demand for mineral resources

• Decreasing discovery rate

• Deposits in challenging environments

• Decreasing grades

• Complex and fine-grained ores

• Demand for ‘new’ metals

• Environmental impact and public acceptance –

Sustainability

• Long project development pipeline

Key Challenges for the Resource Industry

Background Vision

The institute will become the national (European)

centre for researching and developing

technologies designed to assure and safeguard

the steady supply of mineral and metalliferous

raw materials for the German (and European)

economy.

Goals

• Development of new technologies

• Contribution to environmental protection and

sustainability

• Establishing meaningful economic relations

between European industry and resource-

rich countries

• Training of a new generation of resource

industry professionals for industry and

academia

Building Research Competence

• Founded August 2011 as a Helmholtz Institute being part of the Helmholtz Society

• Funded by national government (90%) and Free State of Saxony (10 %)

• Currently 16 staff members – aimed to expand to 100 by 2015

• Analytical and technical infrastructure currently shared with TU Bergakademie

Freiberg and HZDR – own infrastructure available by end of 2013

Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg

The Resources University. Since 1765.

Selective Bond

Bioleaching at Talvivaara Mine, Finland:

• Prod./a.: 33 kt Ni, 1,2 kt Co, 10 kt Cu,

60 kt Zn

• Duration: 5 years

• Recovery: 98%

Potentials of Biosorption:

• High selectivity

• Environmental friendly

• Coupled with bioleaching ?

Opportunities for Collaboration

For research institutions and universities

• Large research projects (funded by public research grants or by industry)

• Exchange of academic staff and students (funded by HGF, DAAD)

• Use of unique infrastructure (funded by HIF, HGF, or DAAD)

For industry

• Research projects of fundamental character, capitalizing on unique

expertise and infrastructure

• Development of innovative technologies

• Strategic technology advice
