We can assume that it was no different in the case of Jesus. Jesus learned to work and help his family generously. He obeyed his parents, trusted them, helped them and loved them. What an example Jesus gives to us! As God, He could have lived in a sumptuous Jerusalem palace and yet he freely chose to engage in humble daily work in the workshop and home in Nazareth. Family life can be difficult today and yet families are still called to strive to imitate the virtues of the Holy Family – virtues like simplicity, kindness, humility, charity, and diligence. In fact, the family is designed to be a school of virtue. It is the place where children are given a solid foundation on which to build the rest of their lives. Pope Saint John Paul once said, "The family is the first community of life and love the first environment where man can learn to love and be loved, not only by others, but also and above all for God." (John Paul II, Meeting with Families in Chihuahua 1990). The Holy Father tells us that spouses should orient their hearts and minds to God so that in their parenting, they would find grace and strength. Just as Jesus grew in wisdom and grace before God and men, our families should strive for the same. This means that children are called to learn to be kind and respectful to all and obedient to parents in a spirit of trust. Parents, of course, are called to love and pray for their children in a sacrificial way. As we celebrate this great feast, let us recall that "the world's salvation came through the heart of the Holy Family". The salvation of the world and the future of humanity depends on solid family relationships. May God give us the grace we need to build up our own families in love. God sets a father in honor over his children; a mothers authority he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother. My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins —a house raised in justice to you. Holy Family

At this time each year, the Church gives us the Feast of the Holy Family to hold up for us a model of family life. Mary and Joseph took care of Jesus. As good parents, they struggled and worked hard for their Son so that he was raised in a loving and sacrificial home. Joseph provided Jesus a model for what it means to work with one’s hands. He was a carpenter and shared that trade with Jesus who was therefore known as the “carpenter’s son”. Mary lovingly cared for the home. As was the custom at that time, the children helped their mothers grinding wheat and fetching water from the well.

God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons.

Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life;

kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins

Question of the day Q. I am Hopelessly confused by Holy Days of Obligations and

Sundays. How do the Holy Days work exactly, and do they carry the same weight as, or more than, Sundays? Where do solemni-

ties fit in all of this?

A. There are 52 Sundays in a calendar year. Every Sunday is a Holy day of Obligation, but not every Holy day falls on a Sunday.

There are 10 universal Holy days of Obligation that do not fall on a Sunday about six out of every seven years. And then there are 17 solemnities during the year: some of which are Holy days of Obligation. A “Solemnity” is the highest rank for a liturgical cele-bration, and such celebrations follows this order, in ascending order: weekday, memorial, feast Sunday, Solemnity. The sim-plest way to explain it is to list the feasts. Here are the 10 Holy

days of Obligations, all of which are solemnities:

Jan 1– The Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God

Jan 6– Epiphany

March 19– St. Joseph

Ascension

Corpus Christi

June 29– Sts. Peter and Paul

Aug 15– Assumption

Nov 1– All Saints Day

Dec 8– Immaculate Conception

Dec 25– Christmas

Here are the remaining solemnity during the year, four of which al-ways fall on Sundays and therefore count as Holy days of Obligation

Easter

Pentecost

Trinity

Sacred Heart

June 24– Nativity of St. John the Baptist

Christ the King

On Behalf of Deacon Armando, my staff and myself we wish you a Happy New Year! May the Lord continue to

Bless you and your family.

Y regresaron a Nazaret.

El que honra a su padre expí a los pecados, y se preserva a sí mismo por ellos. Cuando oramos, somos escuchados;

y, cuando ora, es escuchado. El que venera a su padre tendra larga vida;

el que obedece a su padre trae consuelo a su madre. Hijo mí o, cuida de tu padre cuando e l es viejo;

no le llores mientras e l vive. Incluso si su mente falla, se considerado con ellos;

Enero 6- Epifaní a Marzo 19- San Jose
