The Need of Development & The

effects of an increasing population on the ecosystem

• Economic activities & development project lead to frequent human interference with the balance of nature

• The negative effects of hasty unplanned & unmanaged development various environmental problems.

• These environmental problems threaten our health, the management of resources & the ecosystems.

Page 3: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

• In order to reduce the negative effects of development, every economic activities or development projects must be balanced by efforts to manage the environment with the sustainable manner.

The importance of proper management of development

activities

• One way to balance the demand for resources with the need to conserve the resources is to carry out sustainable development

• A need to have continues development & improvement in the life of people

• This development can be sustainable without jeopardizing the recourses of the country.

Page 5: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

• Development activities must take into consideration & the environmental impacts that will follow.

• It is importance that short term gain be balances with the long term effects on the environment.

-sustainable development depend largely on the rate at which renewable resources are used.

-the goal in sustainable development is to exploit natural resources in a sustainable way.

Page 6: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

• Forest must be manage properly as they vital environmental function & enormous economic potential which can be tapped.

• Eg: sustainable development means that timber can continue to be harvested while the biodiversity of rain forest is protected.

1) Implementation of laws• The government has enacted legislation to

govern biological resources & the environment

• Many laws are design to control pollution which affect the quality of land, air and water.

-The environmental quality act, 1974 ,1989-The national forestry act, 1984-The pesticides act, 1974-The fisheries, 1985-The protection of wild life act, 1972

2) Use of Technologies

• Install catalytic converter in vehicles to clean up exhaust emission & convert the harmful gases release during combustion of fossil fuel to less harmful product

• Use unleaded petrol to reduce the emission of lead into the environment.

• Treat sewage in sewage treatment plants before it is discharge to reduce water pollution.

Page 11: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

2) Use of technologies-continue…

• Use microorganism to clean up the environment

• Develop hydrogen-bases fuel-cell vehicles to reduce the burning of fossil fuels

• Use technologies to reduce CO2 from power plant

• Reduce methane emission, a by product of cattle & other livestock waste

3) The National Forest

• The government has enacted legislation to govern biological resources & the environment

• Many laws are design to control pollution which affect the quality of land, air and water.

• The environmental quality act, 1974 ,1989

Page 13: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

4) Education on the Management of resources

• The public must be educated on the concept of 4Rs

R-Recycle old item eg old paper into new product

R-Reuse eg: bottle instead of throwing themaway

R-Reduce use of non-biodegradable item eg: plastic bag

R-Renew

Page 14: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

5) Preservation & conservation of soil, water, the flora & fauna of forest & the mangrove swamps

• Good agriculture must be practice:-crop rotation-contour farming-effective drainage & irrigation• Water sources & water catchments areas

must be preserved. Eg: not throw domestic & toxic waste into river

• Deforestation & forestation must be balanced

Page 15: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

5) The practice of biological control

• The use of natural predators to control the population of pest species

• Eg: the use of owl to control the population of rat in oil-palm plantation

• Biological control vs chemical control-effect of pesticide remain for a long periods-the concentration of pesticide amplified as they

pass through food-chain lead to its accumulation in final consumer.

-the cost of using pesticide is high-extensive use of pesticide pollute the

environment.

Page 16: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

6) The use of renewable energy

• Is the energy that occur naturally in the environment & can be harnessed for benefit of human.

• Eg: solar energy, wind energy, biomass, geothermal and so on.

• These energy are inexhaustible & do not pollute the environment

Page 17: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

7) The efficient use of energy • Reduce the burning of coal, petroleum & other

fossil fuels.• Substitute natural gas for coal at power plant.• Improve fuel efficiency in vehicles-use car that

run on energy –efficient engine• Use cleaner fuel by reducing the content of

sulphur in diesel & switching to gases• Improve energy efficiency in factor• Use more hybrid car which combine electric &

gasoline engine.

Use planning and management methods that address the connection between pollution problems on land, in water and in air.

Use planning and management methods that maintain, protect and enhance productive and sustainable forests, fisheries, and wildlife and other harvestable natural resources.

Page 21: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Prevent and, where practical clean up pollution of soil, water and air to ensure the stability of ecosystems, using innovative, cost effective voluntary or enforcement methods.

Maintain and restore terrestrial, wetland and aquatic ecosystems that support diverse flora and fauna, and that provide landscape scale ecosystem functions from flood control to groundwater recharge.

Protect and, where practical, reestablish endangered resources and habitats and work to eradicate or control harmful, non-native species.

Page 22: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Protect ecosystems through acquisition of land, easements or other innovative strategies.

Meet, and where possible exceed, the public vision for an environment that supports sustained economic, ecological, aesthetic, recreational, agricultural, and other uses.

Determine and plan for long-term state water quality and quantity needs to ensure ecosystem integrity, sustained development and economic stability.

Promote reduction, reuse and recycling of consumer goods.

Page 23: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

Environmental education should also be made part of the academic programmes in schools, colleges and universities to make everyone conscious about the environment and dangers facing mankind together with other living and non-living things if no immediate actions is taken.

At the personal level, everyone can play a part to conserve the Earth’s energy and resources by the recycling process in our daily lives.

Page 24: THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER MANAGEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES

• Non-governmental organisations(or private organizations plays a very important role in the fight for a better and safe environment. They call public attention to pollution problems and also put force government and industry officials to act on the problems.
