During the NHL draft, hope-fuls sit patiently with their families, as names are called, with players in the later rounds watching from home.
Excitement gleans from the
faces as players walk to the stage to don their future NHL team’s jersey.
The Western Hockey League Bantam draft carries much less fan fare, with most of the play-ers sitting in school and trying to learn — the key word is “trying” — as they wait to see if a western team will retain their rights.
May 7 was a historic day for Dawson Creek, when three play-ers, Wyatt McLeod, Riley Krane and Tanner Bahm were taken in the 7th, 8th and 9th round con-secutively.
Only one player in the 20 plus year history of the WHL Bantam draft had ever been taken from Dawson Creek, goalie David Readman, who went to the Red Deer Rebels in the 6th round of the 2009 draft.
McLeod had his named called in the 7th round of the 2015 draft, the first position player from Dawson Creek to ever have his named called, and was se-lected to one of the closest WHL teams to the area, the Edmonton Oil Kings.
“It’s a pretty neat feeling knowing that there haven’t been many [players] from Dawson Creek,” McLeod said.
“And it’s just a result of hard work and I was fortunate enough to have great coaches through-out the last five years who have really pushed and developed me
as a player and as a person.”McLeod added that he lost
all focus on his math homework when he heard the news.
“I wasn’t even watching the draft,” he said. “I was doing math and my buddy from school called me and said I was drafted … about five to ten minutes later my phone blew up.”
The 15-year-old had a stand-out year in the Edmonton Rural Alberta Bantam Hockey League, with 65 points in 30 games. He was sixth among all players in points and first in defenseman scoring. His Dawson Creek Ban-tam team also finished second in tier two provincials.
Last weekend he had the opportunity of a lifetime — a chance to hit the ice at Rexall Place with several other hopefuls last weekend.
“I figured out how hard I have to work to have a chance at the team next year, that’s for sure,” he said. “It was a great feeling know-ing all the hard work I put in this year and then getting rewarded and get to practice on the same ice that Wayne Gretzky played on — me and my dad went down there and it was a pretty neat ex-perience for the both of us.”
Riley Krane went in the fol-lowing round of the draft, 168th

Up to 90% of pregnant women experience nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Symptoms usually start around the 6th week of pregnancy and stop around the 12th week. Some women however, will continue to experience nausea and vomiting throughout their entire pregnancy. Contrary to popular belief, nausea and vomiting can occur at any point during the day, not only in the morning.
CausesThe exact cause of this ailment is unknown.
Many believe that it is triggered, at least in part, by hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy.
Although symptoms interfere with daily activities (family, professional and social activities), nausea and vomiting do not, generally speaking, harm the fetus or the mother. Nausea and vomiting are more common in rst-time mothers, teenagers and women who are overweight.
PreventionTaking multivitamins before becoming
pregnant appears to reduce the risk of su ering from this ailment. However, the iron contained in multivitamins may worsen symptoms in some women.Although there are no guarantees, certain lifestyle strategies may help reduce symptoms:• Before getting out of bed in the morning, eat a
few crackers or some bread• Wait 15 minutes before getting out of bed and
get up slowly• Eat small meals or snack often so your stomach
is never empty• Avoid strong odours - the smell of lemon and
ginger is said to alleviate symptoms• Avoid spicy and fatty foods• Rest, since fatigue worsens symptoms• Get some fresh air and avoid heat

• Eat what you feel like eating and eat when you are hungry
• Avoid drinking while eatingTreatmentAlthough meditation, hypnosis,
acupuncture and acupressure (wristbands that apply pressure to the wrist) are harmless, their e ectiveness has not been scienti cally proven.
In Canada, safe and e ective medication is available to treat nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. It is recommended that you seek treatment for nausea and vomiting as soon as possible to avoid complications. That said, do not hesitate to consult your healthcare provider for a prescription.
What to be aware ofWhen nausea and vomiting aff ect you to the
point where you are skipping meals day after day, if you cannot tolerate any food or drink, if you are losing weight or feel dehydrated, it is important that you consult with your healthcare provider as soon as possible.
If nausea and vomiting only appear after the 9th week of pregnancy, or if it is accompanied by headaches, abdominal pain or fever, consult your doctor. It is likely that your nausea and vomiting are not related to your pregnancy.
There is no reason for you to feel alone, ask for help and support from family members and loved ones. Also, do not hesitate to consult your healthcare provider to talk about treatment that will help relieve your symptoms and allow you to enjoy your pregnancy.

Continued from Page 2‘overall to the Regina Pats and
after returning from Pats spring development camp last week-end, Krane is looking forward to improving his game this season at the Okanagan Hockey Acad-emy.
“Just have to get bigger and stronger to play at that level,” he said.
Krane was in school during the draft, but that didn’t stop him from finding out the minute he was selected.
“I was in school, the teachers were getting mad at me for pull-ing out my phone every two sec-onds watching it,” he said over the phone from Penticton earlier this week. “I was watching the whole thing online. I was pretty happy when I went to the Pats because I know it’s a great orga-nization.”
Krane had a stellar year with OHA, recording 54 points in 53 games. He is also one of 40 for-wards to be named to the U16 provincial roster that will com-pete at a camp from July 16-19 in
Nanaimo. Tanner Bahm was also named
to that U16 roster and was select-ed in the 9th round, 180th over-all by the Kamloops Blazers after McLeod and Krane. He took a bit longer to find his game, but still managed 34 points in 51 games at OHA this season.
“I was in science class at the time,” he said. “It was pretty hard to focus on the work. Had the phone out for sure.”
Bahm hasn’t had the chance to workout for Kamloops yet, but recognizes the opportunity it could provide to one day put on a Blazers jersey.
“Dawson Creek is a small town, not very many guys [have come out of there],” he said. “Just have to work hard, that’s what it all comes down to.”
Former Dawson Creek resi-dent Kip Noble, who now coach-es Krane and Bahm at OHA and coached McLeod in Dawson Creek, said just for the three play-ers to be selected is an awesome stamp for the city.
“We started from an early age and what we did was just work on skill development stations,” Noble said over the phone from Penticton. “For a small town I guess that’s a pretty big deal with these guys going. We have seven kids at the Okanagan Hockey Academy from Dawson Creek, five of them could have been on that Bantam team this year … it’s a neat thing [for them] to be rec-ognized for sure … they are defi-nitely role models up in that area [Dawson Creek].”
Noble went to explain that for the two players he coached this year he saw a steady develop-ment in two areas of their game.
“Overall improvement as far as those two boys go was the strength and their speed,” Noble said. “That took off — ten months ago it wasn’t bad, it was okay. Af-ter being at the academy, work-ing every day on the ice and off the ice their overall strength and speed is what got them to the spot they are at today.”
The three players are well aware of the long road ahead of them, but in their selection know they have already accomplished a small step towards their ultimate goal and maybe even helped draw a little bit more recognition to hockey in Dawson Creek.

The Dawson Creek Fire De-partment responded to an ear-ly morning house fire on 114th Avenue on June 5 at around 3:30 a.m.
The house is unoccupied, according to Deputy Fire Chief Bob Fulton.
The cause of the fire is not known.
"It was a real difficult fire to fight," Fulton said. "Not only with multiple layers of roof-ing material, but multiple roof lines within the structure."
Firefighters believed the fire to be under control before 6 a.m., but by about 8:15 a.m. the department was back on scene in response to a flare up in the attic of the home.
“There must have been some embers trapped in between the different roof lines that reignit-ed with the wind and got up and
going again,” Fulton explained.By about 9:15 a.m. firefight-
ers reported having the blaze back under control, but contin-ued to battle the fire from both inside and outside of the struc-ture.
“We had to do a little more demolition inside to expose where it was burning and even-tually we got it put out,” Fulton said.
Clean up will commence on the site shortly, Fulton con-firmed, and an investigation will begin as soon as it is safe to enter the building.
“Right now the basement is full of water. Until that gets drained and until we can as-sure that we’re safe entering the building we can’t really do much more than what we’ve done now,” Fulton said.
The Fire Department hopes to know more about what caused the fire next week. [email protected]

People of the Peace: Eva Wicha
Finding solace in charity work for NepalWhen a 7.8 magnitude earth-
quake struck in late April, pock-ets of Nepal were plunged into a daily struggle for survival.
For Eva Wicha, her struggle be-gan in Jan. 2014 after separating from her husband.
This Hungarian-born Daw-son Creek resident’s fate was tied to that tiny nation at the base of the Himalayan mountains when she began to find solace in her charitable work for Nepal, which helped her find a way out of de-pression.
That work ramped up in the wake of the quake — the nation’s worst natural disaster since the 1934 Nepal–Bihar earthquake — Wicha continues to give back to the country that gave her new life.
“When I fell into a deep de-pression, I became a hermit. I pulled in the curtains, and was sitting on my couch crying all the
time,” she said. But, after meeting a Nepalese
friend (who wished to remain anonymous for this story), she became involved in several initia-tives.
Much of that work focused on education, specifically at the Glory English School in Bhakta-pur, where her friend’s brother is a teacher.
It was a natural fit since she taught at Dawson Creek Second-ary School before taking a leave of absence.
First they sent computers, then she began passing on her experiences as a teacher to the teachers in Nepal.
“I have always been into social justice my entire life,” Wicha said. “But I felt I wanted to transfer the knowledge I have gained as a teacher to some people who are less fortunate.”
It turned her life around.“It helped me as much as I
helped others. This was my life-line while I was going through my own tempest.”
Wicha connected with a teacher at the school through her friend’s brother, and later through Facebook. Soon, she made even more friends at the school and
started having almost daily con-versations about what the school needed and how she could help.
She shared her struggle with Continued on Page 12

Life On The North's Longest Wait ListPat Petersen was ready to go under the knife. Early on April 15, the 74-year-old sat in a wait-
ing room at the Dawson Creek Hospital, prepped for knee replacement surgery. Then, hours before her scheduled procedure, word came down: the hospital had no beds available for Petersen's post-
surgery recovery. "I was in my gown and ready to go, and they told
me at 8 a.m. to get dressed and go home," she said. The surgery was tentatively rescheduled for June 3, but on Tuesday, Petersen learned the procedure was being delayed yet again.
Petersen is one of three frustrated patients who shared concerns about knee replacement surgery
cancellations in Dawson Creek with Alaska Highway News.
Petersen is sitting on one of the lengthiest surgery wait lists in the Northern Health system. According to a Ministry of Health database, 44 patients are in line for knee replacement in Dawson Creek, with an aver-age wait time of 47 weeks. The Dawson Creek Hospital is the only public facility in Northeast B.C. that per-

Local NewsKnee replacement waits, cancellations grind on Dawson Creek patients forms the surgery.
The three said a lack of beds and staff were among the reasons given for the cancellations. On Wednesday, Petersen’s daughter Kathy said they were still try-ing to find a reason for the latest cancel-lation.
“They didn’t say why, it was just can-celled,” she said. “The head of the hos-pital didn’t know. It’s a waste of taxpayer money getting [her mom] prepped for these surgeries. She has to have blood work and a pre-admission clinic and then it’s cancelled. Then you have to do it again.”
While Dawson Creek’s wait times are frustrating, they’re no worse than aver-age knee replacement waits in B.C. (53 weeks) and the rest of the Northern Health Authority (51 weeks). Across Northern B.C., 295 people are waiting for knee replacements. At 85 weeks, the Vernon Jubilee Hospital had the worst knee replacement wait times in the
province. On Monday, the provincial govern-
ment announced it would spend $10 million to tackle surgery wait lists across the province. The money will be target-ed at patients who have been waiting more than 40 weeks for a surgery, and will translate to around 1,000 extra pro-cedures this summer.
It remains to be seen how that mon-ey will impact the backlog in Dawson Creek.
For Marvin Kindermann, 69, the waits are worse than they were ten years ago when he had his first knee surgery. He said he was told in November that he would need a replacement.
“The more you walk, the more it swells, the more it swells the more pain you get out of it,” he said, describing the feeling in his left knee.
“On Monday, I went to see my doctor and he said ‘you’re looking at a year and a half, I would strongly recommend you
find another hospital or go private,’” said Kindermann. He said hospital staff told him elective (non-emergency) surgeries were on hold at the hospital, though a Northern Health spokesper-son said that was not the case.
Don Johnston, 64, who had a knee surgery cancelled in January, agreed limited beds seem to be a factor. He had waited since September for the original surgery, which he eventually got in Feb-ruary.
“They’ve only got a handful of beds, and if somebody walks off the street after an accident, they’re going in,” he
said. Knee replacement patients tend to
wait longer for surgeries than people needing other procedures. Thirty-three weeks is the average wait time for all surgeries across the province. Among the longest waits in Northern Health are for varicose vein surgeries (47 weeks), hernia repairs (39), vaginal repairs (38), shoulder surgeries (33) and hip replace-ments (33).
For now, Petersen is struggling with pain.
“Oh yes, it hurts,” she said. “If I bend Continued on Page 10

She’s also worried about the impact can-celled surgeries has on morale at the hospital, saying administrative problems put stress on nurses and surgeons.
“If [medical professionals] come up here and it’s short-staffed all the time, and you’re treating people like they’re nothing, working in the trenches until they drop, they’re not go-ing to stay,” she said.
According to a 2014 Patient Care Quality Office report, there were 57 official complaints about access to health care in the Northern Health authority last year. The province spent $19.6 billion on health care last year, around 42 per cent of all government spending.

Continued from Page 5 depression with her new-
found Nepali friends, and they responded in kind with helpful advice based on East-ern philosophies. Not being able to talk about her problems with her friends in Dawson Creek gave her perspective.
“I just realized when I went on medi-cal leave how damn hard it is to talk about mental health problems,” she said. “Some days I wish I had cancer so people would feel more comfortable comforting and em-pathizing with my situation.
“When coworkers asked why I went on leave I did not know what to say, and when I told them it was depression, they did not know what to say.”
While fighting this battle, Wicha con-nected with another friend, Rene Sterling, who helped with the Glory English School fundraiser. Together they secured local handmade crafts from Nepal and set up shop at the Dawson Creek Farmers’ Mar-ket, donating all the proceeds to the school.
To get the handmade goods, Wicha withdrew $2,000 and sent it to a person she hardly knew, half a world away. To her amazement, they came through.
“I was standing at the Western Union counter with the money in my hand think-ing I must be going crazy, but I sent it any-
way,” she said.Sterling and Wicha now had a direct,
continuous revenue source for their fund-raiser on behalf of the Glory English School.
When Sterling moved to Grande Prairie though, the fundraiser for the Glory School fell squarely on Wicha’s shoulders, right at a point when depression had her in its grips.
“I had to go out of my comfort zone. Every week on Saturdays for five hours. I had to go and be among people,” Wicha remarked.
“I really cared about the fundraiser, because otherwise at that point in my de-pression, I hardly left the house, I did not answer my phone or check my emails. I wanted to help them, so I had to get up, get dressed and go to the market no matter what.”
She made new friends there with other vendors among whom she found a new support group.
“That’s why I go to the market every Saturday,” she said. “I don’t even go for the sales because some weekends are pretty low. [I go] to meet my little ‘farmer’s market family’, and that includes the regular visi-tors too.”
When the earthquake struck, that new family had her back, and so did local busi-nesses.
From donations, she was able to col-lect $3,000 worth of goods in just half a day from businesses in Dawson Creek and Peace River, Alberta, thanks to the help of a contact there. She sent these donations to Nepal with a friend who was travelling home.
“He had like 60 kilograms overweight, but the airlines let him on free of charge,” she said.
The Glory School was used as a tempo-rary shelter during the days immediately
following the earthquake.Right now, its biggest hurdle is to find
the money it needs to get back into opera-tion. Money Wicha will try to gather here and send. Every little bit helps. One Cana-dian dollar is worth about $83 Nepalese Rupees.
Eva and her daughter, Fanni De Maio, plan to travel to the school in July.
“This story never ends for me,” she said cheerfully.
