From the Director I love this Irish toast and would like to extend it to all of you! March is packed full of fun. I hope the luck of the Irish is on your side and you get to participate in as many events, activities and outings as you

wish. I hope the weather stays on our side as well.

If you haven’t heard, Motospa has discontinued the discount car wash fundraiser. This was a great program for us. We are looking at other ways to replace this fundraiser and we will let you know when we have something new in place.

One BIG way you can help support the Center is by selecting the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center as your charity of choice with your King Soopers Community Rewards Card. Another is by shopping through Amazon Smiles. Neither of these cost anything nor will they raise your shopping bill. Both businesses give us a rebate based on your shopping totals. These funds are paid by the businesses, not by you. You still receive your rewards, discounts, fuel points, etc. King Soopers funds this program by their sale of gift cards. They charge the businesses a percentage to sell the cards at their stores and then King Soopers pays it forward through the Community Rewards program. King Soopers pays out more than $2.5 million each quarter as a whole. The maximum payout for an individual organization is $125,000 per quarter. Currently we have 79 households supporting the Center and last quarter we received $960.11. Can you imagine what those numbers would be if we could get just half of our membership (570 members) to select the Center as their charity of choice? This program is nationwide, so you can get your kids, grandkids and friends to select us and shop at any of the Kroger family affiliated stores in their areas. Please see www.thekrogerco.com for all their store names. We have some dates set up this month to help you with this registration. You can also stop at the customer service desk right where you shop. Bob Halvorson, Executive Vice President on our Board, is happy to help and will come by your home if you need. (Please see page 6 for details.) undershirts, bibs & burp cloths, sleepers & gowns, socks, booties, blankets, sweaters

& clothing (newborn-3 month), baby wash/shampoo/powder/lotion/oil.

Items must be NEW Not accepted: pacifiers, bottles or formula

The collection box will be set out from 3/16-4/13 by the front desk. Stop by and

grab a flyer for additional details.

You may not realize it but Rita and Gary Spreeman bring a touch of Hollywood to the Center. “Always take an evening gown,” Rita suggests, saying you never know what stars you’ll meet or events you may attend. Our story begins in southeast Michigan. Gary and Rita met when she was working at her parents’ bar that was the “hot spot” in town. Rita knew Gary’s brother and sister, but not Gary who had been serving in Vietnam. He came in with his friends on the night she told her parents she would fill in so they could have a night out. She served Gary a beer and he came back later that evening to ask her out. They’ve been married 47 years and have three daughters, Heather, Kelly and Sarah. They also have 5 grandchildren (two boys and three girls), ranging in ages from 21 to 12. They all live nearby so they have fun shopping, vacationing and going to sporting events. Gary still owns a 550-acre family farm in Michigan. “They didn’t get the memo,” Gary says of finding the wonderful state of Colorado. Rita and Gary arrived in southwest Denver in the early 1980s and to the Castle Rock area in 2002. They also lived in Scituate, Massachusetts, where Rita says the nor’easter winters were terrible. Gary’s career working for Commonwealth Theaters, eventually acquired by United Artists, is what took them across the country. Gary worked in supply for mall multiplexes so he made sure theaters had everything they needed from seats, the right size screens, sound systems, projection and automation. He was a member of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He

was nominated for an Oscar in technological achievement for creating a sound system, used in UA theaters, rivaling the popular Dolby System. This award is an honorary award given to those whose technical accomplishments have contributed to the progress of the motion picture industry. Throughout his career, Rita and Gary have met stars such as Sofia Loren, Sylvester Stallone, Warren Beatty, Burt Reynolds and many more. Gary also has met Ronald and Nancy Reagan along with George and Barbara Bush. Rita’s family has a unique story. Her father was from Kentucky where they taught “reading, ‘riting and Route 23” to the automobile plants in Michigan. Her mother was a third-generation Japanese-American who lived at a Manzanar internment camp. She was sponsored by a hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and that’s how she arrived in Michigan. Her mother told her that her dad “was the prettiest man she’d ever seen.” Rita had a 35-year career working in department stores and retired from Macy’s. Gary retired first and wanted Rita to retire so he bought her a diamond ring as an “early retirement gift.” To get her excited about the possibility of retirement, Gary signed them up for a Restaurant Week event at the Senior Center. “We enjoyed the company so much we looked for ways to join,” Rita said. Now, Rita teaches several craft classes from chocolate molds to bath bombs. She also serves as a host for events and has learned to make balloon animals, which are a hit at ArtFest and our Craft Show Extraordinaire. She also is a substitute Zumba dance instructor at the Rec Center and is one of the leaders of the Knit & Crochet group. “We’re kind of a set,” she said of Gary. “He helps with whatever I’m doing.” They are instrumental in doing set-up and tear-down for ArtFest and the Craft Show. This month we roll out the red carpet for Rita and Gary, our superstar volunteers! ~ The Staff

Do you remember the Super Bowl commercial with the Budweiser Clydesdales playing

football? These beautiful huge horses came galloping up and formed two opposing lines. The

first one was a center and kicked the ball back, the next held the ball while another huge hoof

kicked it over the telephone pole goal posts. We recently toured the Budweiser plant in Fort

Collins and were disappointed that those famous horses were not there as they are only in

residence a couple times a year. But they told us a great story. To teach those gentle giants

how to kick a football took a lot of training and repetition and they were successfully able to

shoot that commercial. Only one problem - when the horses were done and returned to their

normal activity, they started kicking everything that they could. Several of those horses were

taken out of the limelight and retired so they only needed to worry about running around

pastures and were able to kick whatever they wanted.

Habits - how long does it take to form a habit? There are many answers to this, but the average

is 66 days – or about two months. We are a few months past our New Year’s resolutions, but

it’s always time to think of something positive for your life that you can turn into a habit. What

about eating an apple a day? Or, how about stretching ten minutes in the morning to start your

day? Maybe coming to the Senior Center one day a week to join others at a Volunteers of

America congregate lunch. Don’t worry, you won’t be “put out to pasture” if you pick up a new

habit!

Treasure Trove Boutique

Come by and check out the Treasure Trove Boutique (pictured above), stationed by the Front Desk.

Nancy Harrison and Sandy Hendricks, along with other volunteers, put in many hours to curate the beautiful,

seasonal selection. All of the items that come back from our Craft Show are displayed and new items are

added all of the time. You can get those Easter baskets filled, start shopping for Mother’s Day and get items to

brighten up your home for spring. Our senior artists make and donate everything from embroidery and

sewing, pottery and woodworking to leather tooling. The beautiful earring selection starts at only $3

(including Swarovski Crystals). You won’t be disappointed.

WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION

We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone safe and off icy and snowy roads, but not always following

school closures. Sometimes we may delay our opening.

There are several ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the message

- if there is no special message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS, CBS4 and Fox 31 - our information will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen; 3) Check the homepage on our website as we will post it - you must actually go into the

website, not just look below the map if you Google it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will receive notices; 5) All

members who are signed up to receive email will receive one that morning. We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM; although please understand that occasionally

we have technology issues. In the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone message before coming to

the Center, just in case we have to close. Thank you for understanding, as we make decisions regarding your safety.

TRIP - Snowshoeing at Mt. Evans, Echo Lake Tuesday, March 3 8:30 AM $19 ($29 nonmembers) The altitude at Echo Lake is 10,600’. However, once you get there, you will be snowshoeing around Echo Lake which is flat terrain. Your Activity Fee will include transportation only. We will stop for lunch after the snowshoe trek, but it is not included in the fee. You must also bring your own equipment/snowshoes, water, snacks, sunglasses, winter boots and appropriate clothing. It is strenuous exercise even on groomed trails. Please watch for an email prior to the trip for continued updates and details. Doris Rollins will be leading the trip, and there is a maximum of 12. BUCKET LIST TRIP - Dog Sledding Snow Mountain Ranch Wed., March 11 5:30 AM $57 ($67 nonmembers) This package includes a dog sled ride on a 2-mile trail that winds through open meadows with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and a presentation following. You must be able to stand, balance and hold on tightly. The experience is similar to skiing. Your Activity Fee includes transportation and dog sledding. Yes, the bus really will leave at 5:30 AM. The dog sled experience will be from 8-11 AM. They must run early in the morning when the temperature is colder. However, the trip is dependent upon the weather and snow. It can be cancelled if there’s not enough snow. In that case, we will credit your payment. Bring money for lunch as we will stop after sledding at the Aspen Dining Room on the premises, where they have a buffet-style lunch with salad bar and bakery. Lunch will be in the $ price range. THEATRE TRIP - “Arts in the Afternoon: A St. Patrick's Day Celebration with Colcannon” Wednesday, March 18 12:45 PM $28 ($38 nonmembers) Let’s head to the Lone Tree Performing Arts Center. Authentic, joyous Irish music, traditional with a touch of chamber music and music hall, Colcannon’s concerts are renowned for its energy, for singer/frontman Mick Bolger’s irrepressible sense of humor and sly wit, and for the music that expresses flights of joy, deep sorrows and an unquenchable zest for life. Arts in the Afternoon is a series of weekday afternoon concerts and performances designed to transport you out of the ordinary. You will arrive back at the Center by 3:15 PM. VOA LUNCHES - Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays 11:30 AM The Volunteers of America host an on-site lunch at our Center, with a nutritious hot meal for a suggested contribution of $2.50 (for those 60 and older). REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS - “Korean Conflict” with Bill Hartline Friday, March 6 1:00 PM No Activity Fee Bill Hartline was a marine and served during the Korean Conflict, Battle of Chosin Reservoir. The battle took place about a month after the People's Republic of China entered the conflict and sent the People's Volunteer Army 9th Army to infiltrate the northeastern part of North Korea. TRIP - Moonshine Distillery & Lunch Thursday, March 19 11:15 AM $25 ($35 nonmembers) We’ll start the afternoon with lunch at La Casa Fiesta New Mexican Restaurant in Monument where lunch will be on your own. Then we’ll head to 3 Hundred Days of Shine, a distillery and tasting room. Their products are made in Colorado's Rocky Mountain Front Range using methods that predate prohibition. There will be a 1/2 hour walking tour of the distillery. We will be broken into 2 groups, lasting a total of 1 hour. You’ll get 1/4 oz. tasting and 1 cocktail. This would even be fun for the non drinkers as they offer an array of non alcoholic drinks. This tour is not accessible by wheelchairs as it’s a tight space. You will arrive back at the Center around 4:00 PM. Difficulty=The Geri-Actives. This is a ticketed event.

TRIP - CBS Denver News Studio Tour

Monday, March 23 10:00 AM $12 ($22 nonmembers) We will tour the CBS Denver News Studio. See how it’s really done! After the tour, you will have lunch at The Copper Pot and the lunch menu is priced in the $ range (see the Legend on Page 12). If you signed up for the trip last month and were on the waitlist, you are not registered for this trip. You need to sign up again for this one. This trip will be run again in the Fall & is ticketed.

TRIP - Olympic Training Center & Lunch Tuesday, March 24 8:30 AM $25 ($35 nonmembers) The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Complex in Colorado Springs is the flagship training center for the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee and the Olympic & Paralympic Training Center programs. They provide housing, dining, training facilities, recreational facilities and other services for more than 500 athletes and coaches at one time on the complex. After the 45 minute tour, we will head to The Mason Jar Restaurant for lunch. They serve comfort food that never goes out of style. Lunch is not included in your Activity Fee, and there will be an automatic 18% charge for gratuity on your separate check. You should arrive back at the Center by 2:00 PM. Town Council Meetings

The Castle Rock Town Meetings are 6:00 PM on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. They are held at the

Town Hall Council Chambers (second floor) 100 N. Wilcox St., Castle Rock, 80104.

Registrations can be turned in at any time to the Senior Center for the 9-hole or 18-hole Senior Golf leagues or for substitute players. Remember that all golfers must also be current members of the Senior Center. Registration forms are available at the front desk or there is a link on the Events Page of our website for a fillable registration form - fill it out online and you can save and print it. Sign the bottom and bring or send to the Senior Center with your payment. The Golf League runs from May through September, playing on Tuesday mornings at Red Hawk Ridge in Castle Rock. There is a kick-off meeting of the golf league on March 31 at 9:00 AM at the Senior Center. You can also register at that time.

This is an all-levels class that is designed to decrease joint pain, increase mobility and muscle strength, and improve the general health of your

body and mind. Anyone at any age and shape can improve his or her general health with the smooth

and gentle movements of Tai Chi. Wear flat, well-fitted shoes, loose clothing and bring a bottle of

water. You must commit to all 6 classes when signing up. Each class is limited to 18 people, so you

must sign up in advance. Tai Chi is taught by Evelyn Garbo.

Senior Property Tax Exemption Check it out,

as you might qualify

Applications are available on the Douglas County website or at the Douglas County Assessor’s Office.

The Senior Property Tax Exemption for senior citizens was created for qualifying seniors and the surviving

spouses of seniors who previously qualified. Taxpayers 65 years and older as of January 1st, who have owned and occupied the property as their primary residence for at least 10 consecutive years may qualify for the

Senior Exemption.

The exemption reduces the actual taxable value of qualified residential property by 50 percent of the 1st $200,000 of taxable value. The state is responsible for reimbursing the County Treasurer for the lost

revenue. Once approved, the exemption remains in place until there is a change in ownership.

An applicant or married couple can apply for the exemption on only one property. That property must be

his or her primary residence. Married couples and individuals who apply for the exemption on multiple

properties will be denied the exemption on all properties. The application deadline for the Senior

Exemption is July 15.

AARP provides free tax preparation on Mondays and Wednesdays until April 15 in the mobile unit behind the Center. Appointments are available from 9:00 AM through 2:30 PM. The schedules are

already available and you can now make your appointments online. Spots fill quickly.

NOTE: AARP will be doing the taxes on a new computer system, so they will NOT have access to old records, even if they had done them here previously. You’ll need to have current picture ID and Social Security number, as well as past tax forms, along with all

current paperwork.

Click on Sign Up to create a username and password to access the system. After signing in, click on Make or Change

appointments.

“Sugars” Presentation

Andrea Rockwood, a Registered Dietitian with the Nutrition and

Aging Services Division of Volunteers of America, will be

presenting on sugars: what they are, where they are found and

what they do. She will also provide a short explanation of

prediabetes and diabetes prevention. Take advantage of this free information!

Do you have a meal restriction and/or sensitivities to certain foods? Many people do, and it’s becoming more common. We will do everything we can to accommodate you on our trips. We work with

restaurants and caterers who are very helpful and knowledgeable. Sometimes, however, certain changes are not possible, but we will outline what will be available for you in the newsletters. Help us help you. When signing up for a trip where a meal is provided, contact Shannon Rutt at 720-733-2290 once you’ve registered to inform her of any food issues. You don’t need to do this for regular out-to-dinner and out-to-lunch trips. You can do that when you arrive and order. Happy eating!

Where to Look for Activities Etiquette

Dear Seniorita, When I was in the Senior Center lobby I let someone go through the inside doors to the Rec. Center. It was so cold outside. I was told that I shouldn’t be doing that. Why is that? —Door Dasher

Dear Door Dasher, We need to respect the Rec. Center rules. It is their policy that the patrons must check in at their front desk so they have appropriate counts for their programs. However, the number 1 reason for the policy is safety, in that they have childcare on the premises. If you need any help or run into this, please redirect the patrons to the staff at the Front Desk.

Dear Seniorita, I came to watch the movie here with the other Seniors. I had to leave halfway through, because the person next to me decided to take a phone call. I couldn’t hear what was going on. —Busy Signal

Members are encouraged to nominate outstanding individuals for one of two special membership designations.

Lifetime Members are those members who have dedicated a great deal of personal energy and time to the mission of the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center, serving on the Board of

Directors or leading supporting activities. This is a permanent designation.

Honorary Members are non-members of the Center, and the designation is usually reserved for government officials or others who have provided ongoing support to the Center.

Their status will be reviewed annually.

Nominations for candidates to be considered for either of these classifications will be accepted annually from January 1 through March 31. They will be reviewed and voted upon

by the Executive Board, with the presentations of honorary and lifetime memberships made at the Volunteer

Appreciation Event in May.

Nomination forms are now available at the front desk or on the Membership page of our website. Turn them in to the
