Happy Holidays to all! By the time you get this, the 25th Anniversary Castle Rock Craft Show Extraordinaire will be over and that means we can all breathe a sigh of relief, take a little rest, and then gear up for the holidays and the anticipation of a new year. Being an empty-nester and living far from extended family, I love Christmas when my whole family does whatever it takes to be together. This year we are all going to California, so I get the blessing of being a guest rather than a host.
I am grateful to have family to be with, but I also know that many seniors don’t have that good fortune. I encourage you to invite someone who is alone to join you for a holiday dinner, as that is what this season is all about. There is no time like the present to bring joy to someone else. What other things do you do to making this a season of giving, whether it’s for your family, friends or even total strangers? I’d love to hear from you, so stop by some day and tell me.
This time of year is also one of gathering together, singing songs, eating great food and being a part of something special. We’ve got opportunities for you to do that all month long, from our annual Holiday Potluck where we’ll be singing along with a group of Dickens Carolers, our Secret Santa Reveal Party where we find out who is giving us gifts, a trip to the Governor’s Mansion to see the decorations, and the holiday Mystery Trip that Deb and I have been planning for a year. We hope you’ll join us.
May you all have the best holiday season ever! ~ Debbi

Mary Hudson has been selected to head up a team of fellow volunteers who will keep books shelved and organized in our lending library, along with sorting through the ongoing book donations, adding many of them to the lending library and boxing
the rest for the Book Sale at our annual Craft Show. Mary is originally from New Jersey and is retired from the Air Force. She has 10 years of active duty, 3 of those were spent in England. Mary also has 22 years in the Reserve which was very interesting
but challenging at the same time. Her daughter is military as well, and talked Mary into moving to Colorado. Mary loves all that
Colorado has to offer, saying that it is really the “best of both worlds.” There are many concerts and plays as well as hiking and other outdoor activities that keep her busy. When asked if she has any plans for the library, she said that she wants to keep the
nice selection, but make sure to keep bringing in a great variety of titles and genres to include history, spy books and large print. Most importantly, she wants to make the library more accessible to browse, and make sure that everyone knows there are no time
limits on returns.
Be a part of the fun changes in the
Library!
Come meet the new Librarian and see how you can be a library volunteer
at an informational meeting on
Tuesday, December 5th at 12:15 PM in the Library!

December Volunteer: Charles Holverstott V

A true Southern gentleman is a great description of our November
Volunteer of the Month. Charles Holverstott has been one of our
volunteer drivers for over 2 years. He drives for both our daily shuttle and
on some trips. He has roots in the South as he was born and grew up in
Ellijay, GA. He is the youngest of 3, with 2 older sisters. Charles’ caring
spirit initially led him to the field of respiratory therapy where he worked
in both hospital and home care settings. He eventually made a career
change and began working in the field of information technology (IT).
Even though he left the direct care side of the medical field, he stayed
within the healthcare arena. His work in IT found him managing large
mainframe information systems in medical centers. He received a bonus in
his career as it led him to meeting his wife Cherie when they worked
together at Porter Hospital. They moved from Colorado to Virginia, then
Alabama and settled back in Colorado upon retirement. After searching for
just the right place to live, they decided that Castle Rock met all their
needs. Charles and Cherie have a blended family; he has one daughter, Cherie has two daughters and
together they have 6 grandchildren.
Charles became a volunteer at the Center when he was looking for something that utilized his love of
people and driving. As a volunteer, he is compassionate, courteous and provides great attention to detail.
Charles shares his time and talents with additional organizations as he volunteers with Dumb Friends
League and Castlewood Canyon State Park and is a member of R.S.V.P.
Charles has an adventurous spirit and as a high school student was a volunteer fireman. Colorado is a
great setting for Charles to live and enjoy his love of the outdoors. He is a skilled skier who hits the slopes
whenever he can, and in the warmer months gets outside as much as possible. We are fortunate to have
Charles on our team of wonderful volunteers. Thank you Charles!

I started thinking about the word “tradition” the other day - probably because it's coming to that time of year where we remember many special moments. By definition, tradition means: the handing down of information, beliefs, or customs from one generation to another, according to Mariam-Webster. Of course, traditions aren't only referring to the holiday time, but often the important ones are around time spent with family and friends.
Growing up, on Christmas Eve, after having dinner and my brother and I washing and drying the dishes (no dishwashers yet), we would then get to pick one present from under the Christmas tree and open it. You never wanted to pick the best present of the few under the tree that had your name on it as you really wanted to save that for the next morning...anticipation was half the fun then as it still is today. I am sure that each of you have your own vision of a tradition that is not necessarily a big one, but is important to you. Another one of mine would be that every weekend we met at my grandparents’ house in the country and the adults played cards and the kids played games - did I mention I had almost 50 first cousins? There was always enough for two sides of a team to play baseball or football. Yes, with an older brother and cousins, even little girls played football.
Today, rarely a Sunday goes by where I don't watch a football game, (#1 Packers, #2 Broncos). Do I know every signal and position? Probably not, but perhaps I still connect, watching now to reminisce about childhood weekends of endless play without a worry in the world surrounded by people that cared for you. I am thankful for those memories that intertwine my traditions of the past with the current, and hopefully into the future. The current generation is used to instant gratification and has amazing technology skills. However, you each have a gift to share with them of a story of a tradition, and even though it may not seem to have an effect now, perhaps you have planted a seed.
PS: My 18-year-old daughter still has us each open one gift on Christmas Eve.

How You Can Be a Part of
Colorado Gives Day
Colorado Gives Day is THE day to give to selected
non-profits throughout the state because donations
made online at www.coloradogives.org that day are
included in the $1 Million Incentive Fund – so
donations go further. Our senior center is fortunate to
be included in this. Many of you have children,
grandchildren or other friends or neighbors who
know what this Center means to you. This event is
the perfect opportunity for them to make a donation to
us – in your honor. They will join with thousands of
others who are giving on December 5th. They won’t
give unless you ask, so please pick up the phone
and ask them to make a tax-deductible donation to
the Castle Rock Senior Center on Colorado Gives
Day. They can even designate that it is in your honor.
Everyone at our Center thanks you for participating in
this way.

IREA HOLIDAY LUNCHEON At the Douglas County Events Center Wednesday, December 13 from 11:30 AM - 1:30 PM no charge The Senior Center will be closed during the IREA Holiday Luncheon. This is an incredibly popular outing for seniors during the holidays, and so generous of the IREA. It is, however, limited to the first 300 who sign up, so make sure you call the front desk and get your name on the list until it is filled. Names will be checked at the door. Doors at the Douglas County Events Center don’t open until 11:30 AM.

This is a tremendous meal you don’t want to miss. After lunch, you’ll be entertained with your favorite holiday songs by “A Bit O’ Dickens Carolers.”
OUT TO DINNER - The Perfect Landing Thursday, December 28 at 4:30 PM $6 ($12 non-members) The Perfect Landing now has an elevator, so you don’t have to walk up the stairs. WEATHER CLOSURE INFORMATION
We occasionally close the Center to keep everyone
safe and off icy and snowy roads, not always
following the school closures.
Sometimes we may delay our opening.
There are 4 ways to check to see whether we are closed or opening late: 1) Call the Center and listen to the
message - if there is no special message, we are open; 2) Watch 9NEWS, CBS4 and Fox 31. Our information will be scrolled across the bottom of the screen; 3) Check the homepage on our website as we will post it . You must
actually go into the website, not just look below the map if you Google it; 4) Like us on Facebook and you will
receive notices. We try to have these announcements in place by 7:00 AM, although please understand that
occasionally we have technology issues. Also, in the event of a delayed opening, please check our phone
message before coming to the Center, just in case we have to close. Thank you for understanding as we make
decisions regarding your safety.
LEAP stands for Low-Income Energy Assistance Program.
It is a federally funded program that operates from November 1 through April 30 and is designed to help low income households with winter home heating costs. To be
eligible you must pay home heating costs to an energy provider, fuel dealer, or as part of rent. You must be a
permanent legal resident of the US and Colorado, or have household members that are US citizens. Also, the
maximum family household income must fit within certain guidelines. To find out more about LEAP, and to get a LEAP
application, call 1-888-775-5327. The applications are also available at local public assistance agencies.
Download from the web at https://sites.google.com/a/state.co.us/cdhs-leap/
Help is available so check it out. The program re-opened November 1, 2017.

Our 16th Annual Golf Tournament, which was in
September, raised a profit of more than $12,000 for the
Senior Center. We had a committee that worked diligently
for an entire year to make sure that it was successful.
Thank you to Jim Weglarz, Phyllis Tumey, Jim Johnson, Jim Osbourn, Gordon Rollins and Bob Barber. We had
101 golfers, 21 paid sponsors (more than any other year)
and many donors of items for prizes and our auction. We
had dedicated volunteers who worked to make it run
smoothly, thanks to Fran Cason, Beverly Frindt, Sherry Fogleman, Kathleen Cooledge and Dave Meyer. Plans
are already underway for next year’s tournament on
September 13, 2018 at Black Bear Country Club in Parker.

October 10, 2017 Castle Rock Senior Activity Center Attn: Debra Santy Castle Rock CO 80104 Fax #303-814-1035 It is with much regret, to inform you, that the Douglas County Lions Club has to cancel our Annual Senior Christmas Party, scheduled for December 02, 2017. Like most all the service clubs, our membership continues to decline. Last year was our 55th year and we struggled to make subject event a success; in fact, five Lions from three Denver area clubs came to assist us. When calling members to remind them of the scheduled date, I was shocked to learn that six were spending the month of December in Arizona. This does not leave us enough bodies to cook and bake for the expected 150 attendees. This was a very difficult decision to make; we wish everyone a safe joyous Holiday. Respectfully, PDG Jack Beckfield, Sect.
After a fantastic outdoor season of pickleball on the town’s 7 new outdoor courts, with upwards of 100 people getting into the fast-growing senior sport, pickleball is now moving indoors to just 3 courts at the Rec. Center. Because of limited available playing time, players must register for time slots during the sessions: session 2 will run January-
February & session 3 is March-April. Time slots are from 7:00-
8:30 am or 8:30-10:00 am, Monday-Friday. Jim Johnson will be providing instruction for people who would like to learn on Fridays. Rec Center fees for pickleball are $4 each time, or Rec. Center membership, or free with Silver Sneakers membership. Sign up for 2018 sessions, or register for instruction by emailing Scott
Smeeton, Recreation Supervisor, with the Town of Castle Rock at [email protected].

Bob Dunn won the Dining-to-Donate
contest in October, which was at Angie’s Restaurant. Angie’s just happens to be Bob and Sara’s favorite restaurant!
Gail Adams won the Dining-to-Donate contest in September, which was at Duke’s Steakhouse Restaurant. You, too, can be a winner by putting your name on the certificate on page 6 and going to our restaurant of the month.
35 people submitted the correct answer having found the candy corn on page 6. We then drew a name from all the winning entries to win a gift certificate. Congratulations to the winner, E.J. Crumrine.
