The Pastor’s Pen…. St. Matthew, so organised as he is with his particular point to make, puts all of Jesus’ parables about the Kingdom of Heaven/God into one chapter (Chapter 13) that is plumb centre of his Gospel. Not so with Mark, though this won’t come as a surprise to you given the nature of his ‘front line' reporting style of the Jesus story. This weekend, as Jesus was speaking to the crowds, we get two parables about the process and unfolding of God’s Kingdom. These stories with meaning are taken from ordinary life in rural Galilee. They have to do with farming and actions with which everyday folk were familiar. The farmer scatters his valuable seed across the land. The seed and its processes of growth and maturation never rest, even if the farmer has to. It dies to what it was, splits, sprouts and grows until it produces the grain ripe for harvesting. Then the farmer gets to work bringing in the sheaves. The other image has to do with how small things grow to become big things. A tiny mustard seed is sown in someone’s yard. It seems inconsequential at the time, but over many years it becomes a large shrub offering shelter to the birds of the air and shade from the heat of day. The Kingdom of God is like this in the way it comes into being. The Kingdom is what Jesus came to announce and proclaim, and to inaugurate in a definitive and irreversible manner. All of His words and actions proclaim and launch the Kingdom in our midst. It’s still unfolding amongst us and in our world, working its way from under the soil of human living and history, out into the fresh air and sunlight of our words, deeds and daily way of life. In this process we have our own special, sometimes small, but nevertheless essential roles to play. The way we live in our homes, conduct ourselves in our society, participate in our Church and faith community and the things we do and say every day help, or hinder, the coming of the Kingdom of God. But, come about it will, if not with our help then despite us, for God and the working of the Holy Spirit will not be thwarted. St. John has some wonderful things to teach us about what God is aiming to do, and what the Kingdom means. In his Gospel John tells us that Jesus said that He came that we may have life and have it to the full. He also says that Jesus was sent to us not so as to condemn the world, but so that through Him the world might be saved. God aims at our good, nothing else, and that the entire world and its peoples might be saved from the self-destruction caused by greed, selfishness and fear, which is what we mean by the word, sin. The Plenary Council of the Church in Australia, upon which we’ve already embarked, put a starting question to us. I wrote about this extensively last weekend. You can find out what I said on our Parish website at http:// www.corindagracevilleparish.org.au Look under the Newsletter tab. The question we’re asked to think about and to discuss at every opportunity is; What is God asking of us at this time in Australia? We need to think about what God wants of our Nation at this time in its role in the world? We also need to consider the persons/groups we’re with as we ask this question; family, friends, churched and unchurched, Christian, other religion, no religion, and so on? Let’s keep recalling, thinking, asking and praying about this initial question as we go through our days. How we respond, and the feedback we give to this question when the time comes, will not only inform the discussions of the formal Council sessions. It will have a lot to do with the ways we can serve and promote the unfolding of God’s Kingdom and the continuation of Jesus work in our own time and place in the greater story God is writing with our lives.

You can find out what I said on our Parish website at http://www.corindagracevilleparish.org.au Look under the Newsletter tab.

Some Planned Giving envelopes are still ready to be picked up in the pigeon holes at the front entrances at both churches.

Please collect your envelopes this weekend. (Uncollected envelopes will cost the parish approximately $10 to post. Please save us this expense.)

If you wish to be part of planned giving, either via envelope, Direct Debit, or Credit Card, please contact the Parish Office for further details. Your support of the parish, its ministries and its maintenance is greatly appreciated.

One Community One People Celebrations in August: On the weekend 11th/12th August we’ll focus on the 50 years since the present St. Joseph’s Church was opened. At the 6.00pm Saturday evening Mass that weekend Archbishop Coleridge will be present to lead us and he will officially celebrate Fr Mark’s Installation as Parish Priest and Pastor. St Joseph’s School Community will also partake in this Mass. The Parish Choir will sing at both Corinda Masses that weekend.

The following weekend 18th/19th August we’ll focus on the 125 years since the Christ the King Church at Graceville was opened, originally as the Church of St. Michael and All Souls at Toowong. It was then brought to Graceville from there in 1930, some 88 years ago. On this morning, Christ the King School Community will gather with the parish for 9.30am Mass. The Parish Choir will also sing at this celebration.

Later that Sunday 19th August all are invited to come to the Sherwood Services Club for a Parish Luncheon as One Community One People. The gathering will commence at 11am. Details on how to book will follow in later newsletters.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal: continues this weekend. This is your opportunity to provide ongoing assistance to those in our community who are doing it tough. Please contribute to our appeal. If you don’t have funds with you today, please take an envelope and return it in the next few weeks, or drop it into the parish office. PLEASE pray for the members and our friends in the community who need us. And ask yourself whether God is calling you to serve your neighbour through membership of our conference. Members are always happy to answer your questions. “Chalice of Liberty - Protecting Religious Freedom in Australia” Book Launch: The place of religion in Australia has never been more contested than it is today. In this new and timely essay, Frank Brennan and Michael Casey draw on the Catholic tradition to explain why freedom of religion remains of vital importance for the way of life enjoyed in a secular liberal democracy such as Australia. Greg Craven complements Brennan and Casey’s philosophical analysis with an essay discussing how freedom of religion is currently protected in Australia, and what reforms are necessary in order to ensure its protection in the decades ahead. Where: Connor Court Bookroom Suite 2, 146 Boundary Street, West End. When: Thursday 21 June 2018 from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm. Who: Dr Michael Casey - Director of the PM Glynn Institute, Australian Catholic University’s public policy think-tank.

Plenary Council Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit of the great South Land.

O God, bless and unite all your people in Australia and guide us on the pilgrim way of the Plenary Council.

Give us the grace to see your face in one another and to recognise Jesus, our companion on the road.

Give us the courage to tell our stories and to speak boldly of your truth.

Give us ears to listen humbly to each other and a discerning heart to hear what you are saying.

Lead your Church into a hope-filled future, that we may live the joy of the Gospel.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord, bread for the journey from age to age. Amen.

Our Lady Help of Christians, pray for us. St Mary MacKillop, pray for us.
