In a broad sense, any person/event/thing through which you experience God’s presence in a new or deeper way could be called a sacrament.

Sacraments are highly symbolic. They were all instituted by Christ himself.

Sacraments “do” what they symbolize◦ Ex: Baptism symbolizes the soul being cleanses of

original sin. Which is what God is making happen.

7 Sacraments

Baptism◦ Washes away original sin which was committed by

Adam and Eve. ◦ Also, your first initiation into the Catholic faith.

Sacraments of Initiation #1

Christ has called his death and resurrection a baptism.

Baptism is usually initiated by parents on behalf of their child. Godparents are chosen to help raise the child in the Catholic faith.

Baptisimal promises are made by parents and Godparents for us.

Eucharist (Communion)◦ When we take part in the

Eucharist, we do three important things. Celebrate God’s love and

faithfulness Offer all that we are to God Commit ourselves to be at peace.

◦ Recall: Transubstantiation, consecration

Sacrament of Initiation #2

Confirmation◦ When you are accepted into the Catholic faith as an

adult.◦ The Holy Spirit comes to strengthen the gifts you

received at Baptism◦ Performed by the Bishop.

Sacrament of Initiation #3

When you are confirmed, you are saying that you fully understand the responsibility of being a Christian, and that you accept Christ and his teachings.

The word confirmation means strengthening

The person being confirmed chooses a sponsor, someone who will help them in their journey through the faith.

#1. Laying on of the Hands◦ The bishop asks the Holy

Spirit to enter into that person.

The candidate’s forehead is blessed with the sign of the cross. A special oil called “chrism”. It is a symbol of strength.

Reconciliation The priest offers Jesus’ forgiveness to those

who have sinned and repented The point is to heal the relationship Sign of hope and wholeness

Sacrament of Healing #1

Anointing of the Sick Offered to all those who

are seriously sick to help heal them of things that hurt “on the inside” when they suffer

Helps sick people find God in their suffering

“Oil of chrism”.

VOCATION: A call from God to give one’s self for the sake of others

Everyone is called by God to use our gifts & talents for the benefit of others

The Sacraments of Service are given to the Church by Jesus to help us remember what it means to love generously and to help us teach the world about love

Marriage A man and woman make a covenant (a lifelong

commitment) Brings together a man and a woman as “one

flesh” – no longer separate, but one Establishes best possible atmosphere for having

& raising children The love of husband & wife is an image of the

absolute and unfailing love of God Married love is meant to be faithful & last

forever

Sacrament of Service #1

Holy Orders Involves a calling to dedicate your life to

God and His Teachings◦ 3 levels: Bishop, Priest, Deacon◦ 3 vows: Poverty, Chastity, Obedience

Seen as legitimate leaders with the Church Emphasis on dedicated, faithful service

Sacrament of Service #2

Clergyman who assists the bishops and priests

Ordained to service, not priesthood Ministers in different setting – parish, prisons,

hospitals, juvenile detention centres, etc Cannot consecrate the Host 3 fold role of service

◦ Charity – service to the community◦ Word – proclaims the Gospel, preaches homily◦ Liturgy – assists at Mass, Eucharistic minister,

administers Baptism, witnesses marriage, leads funeral services

Deacon

Community leader, messenger of hope & spiritual guide

Can celebrate all sacraments except confirmation (unless special dispensation granted)

Priests orders involve:◦ The call – answer of their own will to the vocation◦ The Instructions – the obligations of a priest◦ The Bestowal of the Order – process of becoming

a priest◦ Prayers – asking for guidance and strength

Ordained minister who holds the fullness of priesthood

Spiritual leader to the diocese Can celebrate all the sacraments Duties of a diocesan bishop include:

Religious Brothers◦ Lay Christian who commits himself to Christ &

Christian community◦ Lives in a religious community that centers his life◦ Cannot celebrate a sacraments, but can take part in

Religious Sisters (Nuns)◦ Catholic women religious who spend their life

servicing Christ and caring for those in need◦ Nuns: take solemn vows & are cloistered ◦ Sisters: take simple vows and live a life governed
