Again thank you and I hope you all realize how much I have appreciated your feedback, concerns and support over thepast few years.  The Iowa Simmental Association truly is top of the class in my book.

2016 EXCITEMENT!! I am so excited for the opportunity that Iowa has been given to host the 2016 NationalClassic. This event is a great opportunity to support the next generation of Simmental breeders as well as showcaseour wonderful state. This National Classic will be one for the history books and if you haven’t planned to donate orvolunteer I encourage you to. Nothing is more rewarding then giving back to our youth and it will take ALL of us toensure that we pull this off. When our visitors left in 2010 they were very pleased with how the event went and wewant to make sure that they have an even better time this year. So, I am asking that each of you find a way to getinvolved as we can sure use your help. Mark your calendar July 9th- 15th.

Well as you all know I like to keep these short and sweet so in closing. As we start the New Year let’s take a fewminutes to remember those individuals that we unfortunately lost this past year and lets carry their love for Simmentalwith us as we go into 2016. I wish you all great health, great happiness, and may your pastures always be filled withgreat Simmental cattle.Best Wishes, Tammy Heaton ~Iowa Simmental Association President

Bill graduated from Collins High School in 1956 and enrolled atSimpson College, where he played basketball and baseball and was a member ofLambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He met Sue Ellen Goode at Simpson, and theywere married in 1960. Bill began serving as a student pastor in the MethodistChurch while a student at Simpson. Bill was ordained a deacon in the Iowa Methodist Church in 1963 and afull elder in 1965. Over the course of his 49-year career in ministry, Bill servedMethodist and United Methodist churches in Armel, Colorado, and manycommunities in Iowa. He served as a judge for many 4-H county fairs over theyears. A self-taught auctioneer, Bill helped carry on Goode Auction Service, founded by Sue Ellen’s grandfather in Lacona more than 100 years ago, andcalled numerous estate, equipment, and charity auctions over the years.

Bill is survived by his wife, Sue Ellen of Lacona; three sons, Bill (KimWalker) of Oskaloosa; Steve (Jennifer) of Iowa City; and John “Eddie” (Jodi) ofDes Moines; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren, a sister, threesisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Editor’s note: Bill was a man with many varied interests and activities, as youcan read above, we should be thankful we had this wonderful man as an activemember of our association. Bill was a generous and giving man...Some of myfondest memories of him were at the ISA Sale at the Iowa Beef Expo and at theAnnual Banquet taking bids for the ‘Prime Directory advertising’ and Juniorfundraising auctions. He was friendly and could talk to anyone about almostanything. When he was awarded the Christensen Elite Award last February, hehardly could say anything, as he felt so humbled by the honor bestowed on himby our Association.

Get to Know your Board Member - Sherrie MooreHi! My name is Sherrie Moore and I am the new Executive Secretary/Treasurer

for the Iowa Simmental Association. Our family has been a long time member of theassociation and proud to be a part of such a great organization! I started in the positionin June and am still learning the ropes as each day comes along.

I was introduced to the cattle business when I married L.E. in 1975. At that timewe were raising Shorthorns which was the breed of choice for the Moore/Stewartfamilies in and around Rose Hill, Iowa. In 1979 L.E. and I bought our first Simmentalbull from the Goode family from Lacona and in 1981 bought out Sam Bunting’s herd ofSimmental cows and thus started our journey in this great breed. We have seen a lot ofchanges over the years and Simmentals are gaining a foothold in the cattle industry as aleader in research, genetic information and boasts having one of the finest juniorprograms in the country.

My husband, L.E. and I live on the family farm near Rose Hill and run about 120head of cows. L.E. teaches Physical Education at North Mahaska High School in New Sharon and is also the girlsbasketball coach. We had the honor of winning the 1A Girls State Basketball Championship in 2012. What anadventure! I am a Realtor with Hawkeye Real Estate in Oskaloosa and keep busy on the farm. Our daughter, Ashley, grew up in the junior program and we were heavily involved at the local, state and national level. She attended everyregional and national from 1994 to 2005 and gained valuable tools for life as well as developing friendships fromaround the U.S. in our many travels. I would recommend involvement to any family as the benefits are numerous toeveryone! Ashley is now married to Bradley Warren and they live in Springfield, Kentucky with two of the cutest kidsthat call us Gammaw and Papa – McLane (2 ½) and Edwin (9 months). They are working on their own herd ofSimmental and Angus cattle. Our wish for everyone is to have a safe and prosperous calving season and we will be seeing you around the barnsometime this year!

Get to know Dr. Bert MooreBert Moore currently serves as an Area Representative and State Association

Liaison for the American Simmental Association. An Iowa native, he grew up on ageneral livestock and crops farm near Iowa Falls, Iowa. He lives in Indianola, Iowawhere he and his wife Millie are in the process of developing 75 acres of pasture andhay ground. After graduation from Iowa State he moved to North Dakota to do graduatework which grew into a 40 plus year career as a faculty member at North Dakota StateUniversity. During that time he coached 40 Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Teamsand taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in the Animal and Range SciencesDepartment and conducted applied research of sheep and beef. Following retirementfrom NDSU he moved to Omaha, Nebraska and spent four and one half years asexecutive secretary of the American Shorthorn Association during which time heinitiated Shorthorn’s move to the IGS multi-breed evaluation system.

Bert’s first exposure to Simmentals was during an Iowa State AgriculturalTravel Course to Europe and Great Britain prior to their introduction to North America. In the early 1970s NorthDakota State tested Simmentals in crosses with Herefords and then established a herd through donations from NorthDakota breeders. Their ASA membership number (1132) is the second lowest in North Dakota.

He has judged beef and sheep shows in 28 states and 4 Canadian provinces and given presentations in GreatBritain and New Zealand. In addition to the beef industry, he has had strong ties to the sheep industry, serving asfaculty supervisor to the NDSU sheep program where national champions were developed in both the Hampshire andColumbia breeds and multiple trait leaders in the Katahdin breed. His wife Millie also served as executive secretary ofthe Montadale Sheep Breeders Association for 39 years and since retirement from there, is part of the managementteam for the Midwest Stud Ram Sale which annually sells upwards to 2000 head of sheep from 40 state consignors thelast full week in June. His daughter Angi and grandson Cole live in Shoreview, Minnesota.Bert started as an Area Representative for the ASA in 2013 and in 2014 added responsibilities working with stateassociations. “It is a pleasure and a privilege to work for the ASA and with Simmental breeders and their stateorganizations. Having followed Simmentals since their introduction to North America, it is refreshing to now see theleadership position they have attained. Simmental cattle fit many markets and are major contributors through theirsophisticated approach to beef cattle improvement.”

Dave Nichols HonoredOn November 15, Dave Nichols,

a longtime Iowa Simmental breeder, past ISA Board member, and pastASA Chairman, was inducted intothe Saddle and Sirloin Hall of Fame,in Louisville, KY. Because of hisnational and internationalachievements and leadership in thebeef cattle industry, Nichols is a

deserving recipient of this supreme honor. He was a pioneer in beefcattle performance measures, as he adapted new technologies intohis family's purebred herds and championed the practices whileserving on state and national association boards. Across the board,Dave Nichols is held in high regard by beef cattle producers, educators and researchers.

In honor of prestigious award, Nichols Farms donated a 3-n-1-sale lot to the ASA Foundation to commemorate this event.
