THE BEST CARPET WOOL

Wool carpets have a historic reputation for quality because as afibre it is known to withstand pressure and have excellentappearance retention properties. The best wool for carpetproduction is ‘strong’ wool and this is grown on sheep breeds foundin Britain and New Zealand. Most carpets will contain both BritishWool and New Zealand Wool because British Wool is more bulkyand resilient and offers texture and unique heathery shades tocarpet, whilst New Zealand wool is softer and whiter andparticularly good for plain, lighter shaded ranges. Combining the twowithin a blend for carpet yarn gives manufacturers the perfectqualities for carpet.

100% wool or 80/20 – 80/10/10 wool richWool has yet to be matched by any man-made fibre; it has superiorstrength and does not need other fibres to improve itsperformance. However manufacturers choose to use syntheticfibres within the yarn blend for a number of reasons. These includefibre flexibility, dyeing, heat setting, stain resistance, durability andcost. These wool rich compositions offer industry standard carpetswhich will perform well in the home.

THE BENEFITS OF WOOL CARPET

PracticalStrong and Resilient – Wool carpet will provide superior performanceover many years as it can offer unique resilience and long lastingdurability. The natural crimp of wool offers valuable ‘bounce-back’ so thatpile compression is resisted and the effects of tracking and shading arereduced – maintaining good appearance over many years.

Easy care – Wool is a natural fibre that has an inbuilt resistance to soilingdue to its natural oils and its outer surface of microscopic scales and as aresult additional anti-soil treatments are not necessary. Simply vacuumingthe carpet will keep it looking good and whilst wool initially repels spills, prompt and complete blotting with white paper towels or an absorbentcloth is advised and will address many household spillages.

ComfortSoft and Warm – Wool carpet adds luxurious underfoot comfort andwarmth to the home and acts as an insulator improving heat retentionand energy efficiency.

Peace and Quiet – Wool carpet absorbs sound and cushions the homeagainst echo and room to room noise transfer.

SafetyFire Retardant – Wool is naturally fire resistant, has a slow ignition rateand tests show that it is self extinguishing within seconds. It meets manysafety regulations without additional treatments and is favoured incontract locations for this reason.

Fall Friendly – Carpet cushions and so provides a softer floor whichprotects against serious injury in falls by the very young or the elderly.

Internal EnvironmentIndoor Environment – As a natural ‘smart’ fibre with a complex physicaland chemical structure, wool helps to create a balanced atmosphere inthe home. It breathes and absorbs humidity in the air, releasing it whenthe atmosphere becomes dry and helps improve air quality by absorbingairborne toxins in indoor air.

Anti–allergy – The minute scales on the fibre’s surface will hold fine dustuntil vacuumed which helps to reduce floating particulate in theatmosphere. Wool does not give off harmful emissions or promote thegrowth of bacteria and wool is not a food source for dust mites.

Eco/Environmental Natural and Sustainable – Grown on sheep, which graze freely, wool isboth 100% natural and fully sustainable. As shearing is a necessary part ofanimal husbandry this means that every year there is a fresh supply ofwool available for the carpet manufacturing industry.

Energy Efficient – Wool is energy efficient in the home and also in carpetproduction.

Biodegradable – Wool fibre is biodegradable in soil and will producenitrogen, sulphur, carbon dioxide and water which are all plant nutrients.

Environmentally Assessed – Wool is an environmentally responsible fibrethat has been measured in terms of its ecological impact. A Life CycleAnalysis study carried out by Leeds University to ISO 14040 standard forBritish Wool concludes that it compares favourably when measuredagainst man-made fibres.

Flooring factsheetCarpet care guide from WOOLSAFE maintenance • cleaning • spot removal • protection • inspection

Entrance or walk-off matsThe use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to

the house is highly recommended, as they will

significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will

soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street

dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be

cleaned regularly themselves.

Regular MaintenanceRegular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and

maintain its appearance. Vacuum clean regularly and

thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can

damage the fibres.

Deal with spillages as soon as possible,

preferably the moment they occur.

Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres,

including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have

the WOOLSAFE Mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet

manufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing

liquids, soaps or other cleaners recommended for

general household use. Although they may clean the

carpet satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause

problems such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or

other damage to the pile or backing of the carpet.

Use only WOOLSAFE approved products

WOOLSAFE-approved carpet

care products have been

independently and

scientifically tested and are

safe and effective for

COLOUR MATCHINGCarpets are produced in batches - known ascreels - and usually each batch produces between500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending onthe creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyerremains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colourreproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to theoriginal or master sample to ensure that thecolour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.

This process if not an exact science and acommercial tolerance is subjective butnevertheless is usually the professional judgementof the head dyer based on his/her experience.

A greater level of tolerance is required onblended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfectcolour matching it is advisable that a single widthbe used in any installation requiring exact colourmatching.

N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travellingin different directions, even though they be fromthe same batch will appear not to match.

For further information please check with themanufacturers recommendations.

SAMPLESThe samples held by individual retailers may notbe from the same batch as current productionand therefore should be used as a guide and notan exact colour match.

SHEDDINGAll cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which iscreated during production when spun yarn is cutfor tuft formation. These fibres fall onto thesurface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff ’.

The effect varies with yarn type and may beremoved without detrimental effect upon thecarpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre isonly a small fraction of the total fibre contained inthe carpet.

PULLED LOOPSPulled loops occur only in looped pile carpetwhere one or more loops in the continuous pileis pulled through the primary backing of thecarpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in aloop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loopsare easily dealt with by trimming the offendingend level with the rest of the pile. They should notbe left as this could result in further loops beingpulled and developing into a ladder.

SPROUTINGOccasionally an odd tuft or two can work its wayto the surface and stand proud of the rest of thepile. This is probably due to one end of the tuftbeing longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuftinstead of V shaped. Remedial action merelyrequires that the offending tufts be scissortrimmed level with the rest of the pile. Theyshould never be pulled out.

SHADINGShading occurs because the pile of the carpet hasbecome crushed, flattened or brushed in adifferent direction to the natural lie of the pilewhilst in situ. This causes light reflection atdiffering angles resulting in the creation of lightand dark patches on the carpet. This will occur onall pile fabrics but can be more noticeable onplainer carpets because the shadows created bypile pressure will not be disguised by a heavypattern or design.

STATICCarpets do not produce static but like otherhousehold fabrics and objects have the capacity tostore it. Static is caused by the build up of staticelectricity upon personnel in a dry environmentand is discharged when a person makes contactwith an object which can conduct electricity (i.e.door handle or filing cabinets, etc).

The static charges will vary in intensity dependingupon the individual, air humidity and the contactmaterials. Static is more usually associated withsynthetic materials as they do not retain moisturevery well but it can and does occur with wool invery dry room conditions.

Preventative measures include the introduction ofmoisture into the room or in situ carpettreatment.

FADING ON WOOLCarpets made from wool can and do fade in use.The degree of fade can vary depending on thecolour chosen and the local conditions to whichthe carpet is subjected.

Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violetlight which is found in daylight, but is acceleratedwhen sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. Thishas the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” thecolour just as exposure to sunlight will lightenhuman hair. Wool is after all animal hair.

Protection should be given to carpets exposed tosuch conditions just as you would protect otherfurniture or fabrics.

A complaint on fading would be consideredjustified if it failed to meet the required shadestandard when tested to the British StandardBS1006 (1990).

PILE REVERSAL(SEE SHADING)

Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap ofthe carpet changes direction and thus reflects lightat different angles showing the effects of shadingwhich can become permanent. It is also describedas ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpetconstruction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, HandWoven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even CoirMatting. Like shading it can be more apparent onplain carpet because heavy patterns can disguisethe effects. It can occur quite quickly afterinstallation. A tremendous amount of research hasbeen carried out over many years by manyinstitutes to determine the cause of thisphenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturingprocess which can cause or cure this phenomenonand therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. Forfurther information please check with individualmanufacturers recommendations.

INDENTATIONSWhen a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it isunreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent.Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longerwill be the time for the pile to recover. In the caseof very heavy loads in place for a considerabletime, the recovery time can be very considerable.

It must be remembered that it is not only the pileof the carpet that becomes indented. the underlaywill also indent and the backing of the carpet mayalso distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some lesswell depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc.

The use of cups below furniture legs can spreadthe load and the net result is a larger area of lessdeeply indented carpet.

The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavystatic load can be measured in the laboratory, usingthe test method described in BS 4939 and manymanufacturers will have data on this aspect ofcarpet performance. In this test the carpet isloaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery ismeasured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since thereare so many different underlay’s however, it is veryrare for the recovery from a heavy static load tobe evaluated on carpet and underlay.

Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning witha rotating brush machine) will speed up recoverybut in the case of serious indentations the use ofan iron and damp cloth or a steam iron togetherwith a blunt darning needle to carefully tease upthe pile can be beneficial. Care must be take notto over wet the carpet, of course.

FLATTENINGFlattening will occur as a result of traffic whicheventually flattens the pile particularly in the mainareas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greateror lesser degree dependant on the amount oftraffic to which it is subjected and the construction(tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of theproduct concerned.

SOILINGSoiling is usually the result of some local conditionto which the carpet has been subjected to, ormaintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do toprevent soiling in use. There are several types ofsoiling which are quite common:

Spillages - Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials orany drink which contains sugar, particularly hotdrinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.

Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave stickysoap residues in the fibres which can result in thesoiling reappearing quite rapidly.

Dust - which is carried on draughts can soilcarpets in various ways, apart from the obvioussoiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggestairborne dust vacuum-drawn through poorly fittedfloorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboardscan be seen quite clearly. Air borne dustsometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, thisis due to the air carried on a draught under thecarpet escaping through minute holes both in theunderlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited onthe pile much like a filter action. In suchinstallations, the use of a lining paper is essential asa preventative measure.

It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise theconsumer when the carpet is measured of anypoorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards andthe consumers responsibility to ensure anyremedial work to seal draughts, is carried outbefore the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaintis to be avoided.

How to decide whether to join a buying

group – and which…

• Evaluate all buying groups as they all work differently

• Talk to the main marketing contact and/or a member

of the committee

• Get a list of members and call up two or three for a

‘real-world’ view

• Establish your territorial exclusivity – where’s the next

nearest member of each buying group

• Ensure you understand the financial arrangements, any

fees that would relate to your membership, how the

bills are paid and whether your fees are refundable if

it doesn’t work out. Ask the buying group for a

consultation to estimate your potential savings

• Review all the extra benefits and services to see what

you would actually use

• Check out the product ranges offered including the

own-label options and the UK/European mix

• Ensure you understand any rules that may limit your

flexibility to run your business the way you want

Why join?Buying groups have been a highly successful feature of

the floor retailing scene in the last decade or so, giving

independents the extra edge they need to compete

effectively with the retail park chains.

More than 1000 retailers are now members of one of

the several buying groups which operate in our sector

and the numbers are slowly, but steadily growing.

While the benefits of bulk buying power are self-evident,

the resistance to the buying group concept among non-

members appears to be centred on fears of

surrendering some control to a committee – and most

particularly compromising long-established relationships

and negotiated terms with current suppliers.

The bottom line is the bottom line. A retailer selling

across a broad range of products is likely to improve

margins within a buying group – but you don’t need a

leap of faith to join up. Ask the buying groups for answers...

Key benefitsIncrease margins

• Group purchases to get beneficial rates

• Rebates

• Exclusive higher-margin products

• Special promotions

One of the key reasons to join a buying group is tobenefit from the discounts they negotiate as a bulkbuyer from manufacturers. The way discounts andrebates are passed on to members varies betweengroups so make sure it’s absolutely clear how this will bedone. You’ll need to work out how this compares withdiscounts you have already negotiated locally withpreferred suppliers.

Increase sales

• ‘Best of both worlds’ proposition

• Wider ranges and exclusive products

• POS, displays and merchandising support

Your customers will like the proposition that you areindependent but with the buying power of a group –this gives them (and you) the ‘best of both worlds’ withpersonal service and competitive pricing. Most groupswill also offer you ‘own label’ ranges and support withpoint-of-sale, merchandising and displays. Centralstockholding may also be on offer.

Access professional services

• Business services

• Financial services

• IT and internet support

•Training and workshops

• Professional bodies

Some buying groups offer an excellent range of otherservices which may be valuable to your business.Financial services include invoice factoring, credit, loansand insurance. Some of the more sophisticated groupsoffering marketing packages, software systems to helpyou run your business operations and customisedwebsites ready to use. Relationships with professionaland training organisations can also offer discounts.

Network with other independents

• Members-only exhibitions with preferredmanufacturers

• Regular meetings

• Regional workshops

• Supplier presentations

• Helpline

A lot of retailers enjoy the buying group environment ofbeing independent but not alone out there on the HighStreet. Groups hold regular meetings and some havetheir own trade shows, regional meetings andworkshops to help you develop your business. Thenetwork gives you someone to call when you needadvice on, for example, an unusual installation, a technicalconsumer complaint, legal issue or business dilemma.

Flooring factsheet

Good underlay will...

• Improve underfoot comfort

• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening

• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear

• Improve thermal insulation and warmth

• Increase sound insulation

• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections

• Last the lifetime of the carpet

Poor or old underlay will...

• Feel hard and unwelcoming

• Reduce carpet life

• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots

• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly

• Not meet British Standards

How thick?

A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with

gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy

traffic will need a thinner, denser pad. The combination

of thickness and density is all important as a thick

underlay with low density may not perform well.

Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will

need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations

with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.

In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and

laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best

opportunities to add value to every sale - with good

profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are

understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.

But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!

Retailers should create an assumption that new

underlay is always required, the only decision is which

type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.

Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can

walk on samples with different grades of underlay and

feel the difference has shown excellent results - some

manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.

Underlay

Sponge rubber

The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat orwaffle patterns in a wide range of weights for differentapplications. It performs well for comfort and has adurable spring retention.

PU (polyurethane) foam

PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typicallymade from recycled foam offcuts. The foam providesexcellent comfort and performance levels with lots ofthickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use.

Crumb rubber

Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort(and very good over stair nosings).

Laminate underlay

There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminateflooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floorand helping the boards float above any imperfections inthe sub-surface.

Combination

A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a goodcombination of protection, durability and comfort. It alsoallows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.

Underfloor heating underlay

Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturersoffer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with acombined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which meansthe underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.

Felt

This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay ismade from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - tocreate a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.Still a very popular choice among contractors whenstretch fitting woven carpets.

Pre-tackified underlay

A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefeltand PU. A removable system for heavy use whencomfort is desired.

Best-selling products at every price point

Large group stock-holdingExtensive tufting expertise Effective service systems Fast delivery fleet

As a UK manufacturer and distributor, Furlong’s objective is

simply to offer its customers the best of all worlds in terms of

price, service and quality - a partnership that retailers can rely

on and a comprehensive product range that consumers will

respond to.

Furlong’s wholly-owned manufacturing company,

Regency Carpets, is one of the UK’s top three tufters with a

modern plant located in Bangor, Northern Ireland.

A long-term programme of substantial investment has created

a major production facility for both 4m and 5m wide carpet

and the new backing plant commissioned last year is now fully

on line.

As a result, the company can produce hundreds of thousands of

square metres of carpet every week, covering all the key sectors

– stain resistant polypropylene, wool twist, wool natural and

many others.

Being in control of its manufacturing means Furlong can control

the cost base and the quality to provide a range of products

that is competitive at each of the price points. Manufacturing

also means they can manage stock more closely and respond

to changes in demand so that the right carpet is always ready

for dispatch.

Furlong’s nationwide distribution network operates across threedepots – London, Preston and Newport – using a dedicatedfleet to carry rolls and cut lengths to our customers usuallywithin 24 hours.

Furlong’s product development team has created a portfolio ofproducts matched to the diverse needs of different customergroups, rooms styles and performance requirements. Regency’sstain-resistant ranges use their own ‘Carefree’ fibre which isbleach cleanable and offered with a warranty for absoluteconfidence. New ranges are introduced several times a year tokeep the offering fresh and interesting and respond toconsumer trends and colour shifts.

Furlong have paid particular attention to the presentation oftheir product range to consumers with market-leading point-of-sale systems incorporating the latest video technology.

Furlong believes in working in partnership with their customers toprovide products and services that ticks all the boxes.

Investing in quality and service

the aim is simply to offer customersthe best of all worlds in terms of price, service and quality

Kirstie Allsop, the TV home-decorating guru, is back on our TVscreens this autumn, with a new series of the popular Kirstie’sHomemade Home and turned her attention to the transformationof a shabby Victorian hallway and staircase in a recent programme.Crusader of items which are hand-crafted or second hand, sheworked wonders with solid brass Hanover stair rods fromStairrods (UK), which she contrasted with a chic, bordered runnerfrom Crucial Trading.

The programme featured Victorian town-house owners, Shaun andGemma, who were completely overwhelmed at the thought ofsorting out the hall and staircase of their three-storey home. Instepped Kirstie, with her practical no-nonsense approach todecorating, who immediately spotted the beauty of a stained glasswindow halfway up the stairs, and chose runner and rods toaccentuate it, in so doing creating a classic look, which reflected theperiod feel of the house and yet appealed to its young owners.

For anyone looking for inspiration the programme is proving hugelypopular, and with over 2.25 million viewers the trade can hope for arush on runners and stair rods this winter. For anyone wanting toreplicate the look: Stairrods (UK) supplied solid brass, Hanover rodsin polished brass.

Water works for Axminster

Axminster Carpets has been announced as a runner-up in the ‘Cleaner Water’category at the inaugural Environment Agency Awards. The ‘Cleaner Water’award recognises companies that have achieved outstanding results inpreventing pollution or improving water quality in rivers, seas or lakes.

The awards were judged by a panel of environmental professionals led by theEnvironment Agency’s Director of Environment and Business Ed Mitchell. Amongthe judges were Nicci Russell, Policy Director at Waterwise, Dax Lovegrove,Head of Business & Industry Relations at WWF and David Acres, Policy &Environment Manager at EDF.

In late 2009, Axminster Carpets officially unveiled a revolutionary WaterRecycling Plant after an investment of some £2 million. The plant converts wastewater back to a level where it can be completely reused: 95% of AxminsterCarpets’ waste water, over 2 million litres per week, is piped back into the plantprocesses without entering the eco-system after having all the contaminantsremoved. The residual waste is being converted to bio-fuel with the long-termplan to use this to power the company’s lorry fleet and the manufacturing plant.

“The commissioning of our water recycling plant was an ongoing part of ourstrategy to minimise the environmental impact of our yarn spinning and carpetmanufacturing processes,” comments Josh Dutfield, Group Managing Director. “Ithas helped us to radicallyreduce our output ofwater with contaminantsand has allowed our wateruse to become muchmore efficient, asrecognised by our positionas Runner Up in theCleaner Water category.”

The awards werepresented at theEnvironment Agency’sannual conference,Environment10, whereEnergy Secretary ChrisHuhne MP, praised thecalibre of entries.

Polyflor A-list stars

“Brands often flaunt the generic BRE ratings of theirtype of product but we can provide customers with amore accurate reflection of a particular product’sgreen credentials” Polyflor continues to lead the way in environmental progress after allfive of its Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) ranges received a positive assessmentfrom the Building Research Establishment (BRE).

Expona Design, Kudos, Bevel Line and the Camaro Flooring Collection allreceived BRE A+ Global certification (ENP 429) for major use areas whilethe Colonia Homeline range achieved an A rating for domestic use.

These ratings are significant for the vinyl flooring market because it is thefirst time that specific LVT product ranges have been individually assessedby BRE Global.

“Brands often flaunt the generic BRE ratings of their type of product butwe can provide customers with a more accurate reflection of a particularproduct’s green credentials,” explains Simon James, Polyflor’s marketingmanager.

“Our LVT ranges have always been popular because of their aestheticquality, durability and best value prices. Now they are backed by the mosthighly recognised environmental accreditation in the UK, so customersdon’t need to compromise and are getting the complete package.”

Polyflor LVT products can be recycled through the Recofloor Vinyl Take-Back Scheme, of which Polyflor is one of two founder members, tofurther reduce the carbon footprint of a project. Taking wool opportunity forward...The opportunity for 2011 is still in the process of being unpacked, itis the Christmas gift that has not quite made it out of the box! “Butwhat is important, is that we build on the success of the last year,”Bridgette Kelly at the BWMB said.

Importantly, the trends that are set by the interior publications mustbe taken advantage of and carpet retailers should watch for newcolours and designs and see how they can offer their customers thiswithin their store. Several large trade exhibitions have made it clearto British Wool that they see wool carpet enjoying a genuine revival.

“I talk to people from a broad cross-section of industry and withinthe media and there is a consensus from those that take the leadon directing the trends that the combination of wool as a naturalfibre and carpet as a design feature is growing.

“But the multi-capable message of wool as the carpet fibre thatoffers more than any other is something we need to promote aswell. Trends are the perfect opportunity to sell but explaining theadded-value can ensure that the customer learns and returns to buywool carpets and rugs for their floor next time,” added Bridgette.

British Wool showcased in the Country Homes andInteriors Calendar. Carpet by Cormar.

The price of success

The British Wool column

Higher wool prices at auction do not always go down well with industry. Success for one side often results in profit hits for another.

But the reality is that higher wool prices based on demand havepushed wool yarn and wool manufactured product prices up.Securing the supply from original source – the sheep farmer andlooking after our UK textile industry is vital to the prospects ofthe whole wool industry. Viable returns are based on woolprices going up but undoubtedly the speed of price increasesover the last twelve months has posed difficulties for many,” IanHartley acknowledged.

“These raw wool prices are governed by the market itself, whichresponds to demand and of course, currency fluctuations. Woolis a superior fibre with a long segregated production process andultimately, it has to be positioned by all as something worthpaying for – an investment in quality. This secures the sheepfarmer and the UK textile industry which we must preserve.”

Naturally Green is the messagethat makes wool superior forcarpets.British Wool range from Penthouse Carpets

Looking back...looking forwardThe launch of the biggest cross-industry promotional effort to raise the profile of wool in all its shapes and forms made 2010 a great year forwool. The Campaign for Wool (CfW) with its Royal Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales, certainly caught the attention of the media. Homeinterest magazines and national press put their forceful might behind the key messages and published many large product features over thosekey textile buying months of September, October and November. Editors responded with personal gravitas to make the wool message strongand stylish. These magazines had beautiful and inspirational room set images that were intended to motivate and set a wool trend.

“But what is most heartening, is that they liked the story of wool and its natural beginnings. The farmer and his sheep appeals to them andtheir readers too,” Bridgette Kelly at the British Wool Marketing Board says. “So you had sheep peering out from the pages of Country Living,Country Homes and Interiors, Ideal Homes, House Beautiful, Your Home and many others, all bringing this unique product story to life.”

On the high street and in the store, there was an amazing surge of support from all types of retailer and brands - big and small and high endto artisan and niche. Stopping the traffic on Savile Row and letting the flock of Exmoor Horn bring a sedate, somewhat surreal atmosphere tocentral London was a stunt that received much media attention too.

And yet in reality, it was the many and varied smaller gestures that made Wool Week the event that pushed wool up the agenda. The POSbranding on wool carpet in carpet stores all over the UK with the Carpet Foundation’s ‘Wool Rich’ campaign was a simple but strong effort tohighlight wool in-store.

Schools, craft groups and museums held events and there was a whole week of events held in the Shetland Islands focusing on their historicconnection with knitting and textiles. It was clear that whilst support for wool had perhaps been a little sleepy and quiet, in 2010 it foundits voice.

“Steve EvansContemporary Life

“The purchase experience for the consumer can be pretty poorin comparison to other big ticket items”

Voice of the trade

Was 2010 better than you thought?Yes it was. In difficult times we have managed to continue ourgrowth pattern, consolidate our trading partnerships andenhance our brand offer with our Drury Lane acquisition.

How bad do you think the coming year will be forfloor retailing?I think it will be very tough, especially for those manufacturersand retailers with business infrastructures heavily gearedtowards a cost leadership / volume based business model. However none of us should forget that for many, adversity willalso bring opportunity.

Has the recession been healthy for the industry toforce improvements in its effectiveness?Going back to adversity and opportunity then for some it willbe a fruitful time and for others a constructive period in thereforming of their business structures / policies. However Ican’t subscribe to the view that a recession can ever be healthy.

Do you think there will be more casualties in themanufacturing sector this year? Are there toomany people making carpet?Critical mass is everything and without doubt supply, homegrown and imports, still exceeds demand. We are all looking tojuggle offering the optimum in service and quality whilst stillmaintaining a firm hold on the solid business principles of leanmanufacturing and unfortunately many of us are still failing.

Possibly this is due to the age old battle of stock commitmentsversus service expectations, demands versus sales profile.

Rather than casualties I think there is a strong possibility thatstrategic partnerships could be struck to take advantage ofproduct cross platform and multi brand selling opportunities asper Headlam who are past masters in operating in this type ofbusiness.

When do you expect consumers to regain theirconfidence?I am not personally convinced that consumers have lost theirconfidence rather that they are brow beaten and dispirited bythe constant flow of bad news from the media and in myopinion this could reverse quickly with the first sign of positivecoverage. The problem is that without doubt ‘bad news sellsbest, because good news is no news’ – Kirk Douglas ‘Ace inthe Hole’ 1951.

Is the VAT rise going to make that much difference? Not in my opinion, + or - 2.5% or £25 in a £1,000 is not goingto influence purchase that much and if it were to become anissue then I cannot imagine a retailer sacrificing a potential salefor this percentage of discount.

What could make a difference is A) the loss of jobs in thepublic sector (our typical customer so to speak) as there is nodoubt that the private sector is not yet strong enough tocompensate and 2) the fuel duty / VAT impact on transportwhich is inflationary across all demographic profiles andbusiness sectors.

Is price winning over design/quality?Price is more influential now in all areas of purchase, whetherthe buyer is on a budget or not. However for those that wantdifferentiation and /or ‘the best’ and can afford it, then price isstill secondary to the demand.

How big a problem is the price of wool at the moment? In considering the pressure of price inflation and the need forcritical mass this is a big problem at the moment andpotentially an issue that we will need to get used to.

The strain on natural resource commodities such as cottonand wool is immense at the moment in both availability of rawmaterial and price control, especially with home grown demandfrom fast emerging markets such as the Middle East, China andIndia being so strong.

There is no doubt that this trend could leave a long lastingimpact on how carpet is priced and sold and the features andbenefits promoted when defining the sale.

What do manufacturers need to do better in 2011?Remain innovative and creative, manage stocks effectively, improve service, realise synergistic partnerships, gain bettercontrol of selling vehicles and above all ‘retain cash’!

What do retailers need to do better in 2011?More of the same, plus considering how to continually improvethe purchase experience for the consumer which at themoment is pretty poor in comparison to other big ticket items.

What’s the smartest change you’ve made to thebusiness in the last couple of years?Listening to the consumer first, considering fashion trendsother than those dictated by textiles when being creative andreforming strong partnerships with industry specialists likeWools of New Zealand.

The Wool Benefits Series from Wools of New Zealand

Natural Beauty, a key benefit of New Zealand wool, underlines why the natural whiteness of the wool makes it thenatural choice for dyeing all shades in the colour spectrum, perfect for the most stylish and fashionable interiors.

Viewing the floor as a canvas is a great way to inject individualcreativity into the home, and carpets can make as much of animpact as any other decorating medium – not only embellishinga room but also making a focal statement.

With winter well and truly here, cocooning and warmth areforemost considerations for the home. The revival of interest inArts and Crafts and the UK’s wool heritage underlines the keyrole carpet can play in our homes – not only creatively but in aninsulating and comforting way.

Colour plays a significant role inour subconscious andparticularly in the wintermonths. The association ofcolour with warmth andcomfort, ie. hot coffee, chocolate, home-made jam, mulled wine and milk puddingscreates a sense of cosiness andwell-being.

Based on the above, colours toconsider for winter 2011 include:

Shades of white from the cooler grey tones to thewarmer creamier hues work particularly well whencombined with shades of black – ink, damson, claret, evergreen, mahogany and blackberry to make amonochromatic yet smart and chic statement.

Shades of grey and shades of beige are a natural option. However, the combined shade of ‘greige’ is definitely theNEW neutral shade. A leaning towards the warm orcool tonality depends on the influence of grey or pink inthe dye. ‘Greige’ lends itself perfectly to texture – deeppile and chunky ribs – just the thing for the wintermonths. Carpets identify perfectly with this trend –creating interesting and lush floorcoverings to sink into.

Shades of purple are THE LOOK for winter – from

damson, grape and fig to eclectic lavenders, the key

influence being the greyed-off dusty depth of hue often

associated with the skin of the fruit or seed.

Colours should be rich and deep or slightly sludgy,

but not regal. This purple colourbank works beautifully

with the ‘greige’ tones providing you work with the

right degree of tonality – containing the same requisite

tones of grey or pink.

Celadon green, denim blues and teal are other

fashionable colours which harmonise beautifully with

the purples and grey tones.

Brian Shatford, who passed away on 26 November, aged 60, was a well loved character in the carpet trade.

After many years in the army and several sales roles outside the industry, Brian joined Tomkinson’s Carpets as SalesManager where he worked for 15 years and had dealings with buying groups such as Metro and AIS. He then set up hisown merchandising company, B.S.D Displays, working with several key carpet manufacturers including Ryalux to distributepoint of sale to retailers all over the country.

Brian joined Ryalux in Spring 2008 as Samples & Merchandising Manager, working alongside the Sales & Marketing teams tolaunch many key product ranges to market and notably, to successfully manage logistics for a series of national roadshows in2009.

Brian joined the sales team as North West Sales Representative in late 2009, and in that short time, had alreadydemonstrated a great rapport with his customers.

Brian will be sadly missed by his wife, son and grandchildren, as well as friends, colleagues and customers, and will always beremembered for his dedication and enthusiasm.

Obituary - Brian Shatford

Efforts by Carpet Recycling UK to divert carpet waste from landfill have showndramatic success over the past three years with more than half of the industry’s totalwaste tonnage recycled in 2009.

UK-based carpet manufacturing members of CRUK diverted 2,760 tonnes of the 5,197total waste tonnages from landfill – a 53% diversion rate. This is far higher than theaverage carpet industry landfill diversion rate of just 6% in 2009. Estimates for 2010indicate an increase in landfill diversion to more than 4,000 tonnes. This represents anincrease in the diversion rate to 64% from a total carpet waste figure of 6,265.

Managed by Axion Consulting, Carpet Recycling UK is an industry-backed association for the research and development of new methods forrecycling and reusing carpet. Axion’s CRUK Co-ordinator Jane Gardner comments: “These figures are a tremendous achievement, showing that UKcarpet manufacturers who are CRUK members greatly surpassed the sector’s average landfill diversion rate of 6% in 2009.” Landfill diversionopportunities created by Carpet Recycling UK for its overall 47-strong membership include outlets ranging across fibre recovery for felts, equestrian surface mixtures, plastic compounding and energy recovery.

Two top performing CRUK members are Penthouse Carpets and Brockway Carpets who estimate diversion rates of 83% for 2010, up from zeroand 17% respectively in 2008.

Recofloor’s unique, innovative and sustainable approach to the collection and recycling ofwaste vinyl flooring triumphed at the 2010 Chartered Institution of Wastes Management(CIWM) Awards for Environmental Excellence.

The UK’s first vinyl flooring recycling scheme won the highly-contested Innovative Practice inWaste Management and Resource Recovery (SME) category, just two months aftercelebrating the first anniversary of its nationwide launch in September. Recofloor wasfounded by leading flooring manufacturers Altro and Polyflor to tackle growing volumes ofwaste vinyl sent to landfill.

The award coincided with November’s record-breaking month of 20.25 tonnes collected in the first three weeks alone. Local authorities, distributors and contractors all benefit in terms of saving valuable landfill space, reduced disposal costs and accentuating ‘green’credentials.

Recofloor’s Project Manager, Jane Gardner said: “It’s a fantastic honour for Recofloor to be recognised in an extremely-competitivecategory which attracted a large number of quality entries. Naturally we are absolutely delighted that the hard work of everyoneinvolved in this successful scheme has been rewarded with this prestigious award.”

The Recofloor scheme is a unique example of two major competitors working collaboratively to promote the sustainability of theirproduct - a major achievement and an important step for the vinyl flooring sector as a whole. Vinyl flooring waste is diverted from landfilland recycled back into new flooring products as well as traffic management equipment such as cones and sign bases. Around 175 tonnesis projected for the coming year, representing a 15% increase year on year.

Flooring at the heart of furnishingThe National Exhibition Centre puts flooring at the

heart of the interiors industry between January 23 to

26 with the launch of an event that promises a new

audience for the business.

Interiors 2011 is the UK’s top event for furnishing with an

established track record of attracting 25,000 visitors to the

Birmingham venue and this year is a first for flooring with a section of Hall 2 allocated to the

industry.

The event already encompasses five halls split by furniture, soft furnishing, bedding, upholstery,

traditional and modern interiors and lighting so the involvement of floorcovering is a logical

extension to the portfolio.

More than fifty floorcovering companies are exhibiting. In the carpet sector, this includes Furlong

Flooring, Blenheim Carpets, Brockway, Bond Worth, Crucial Trading, KJC, MCD and Mercado.

There is strong representation for rugs with exhibitors including: Alpaca, Mastercraft, Oriental

and Plantation. In the non textile area, there is Novostrat Underlay, V4 woodflooring, Millennium

Hardwoods and C&H Distribution.

“We have had good support for the event and it is an exciting opportunity for us and the industry,”

says Andrew Vaughan, director of organisers UBM. “Visitors will be able to cross the halls to visit the

flooring section and there is excellent potential for crossover within the interiors industry.”

The event promises a new audience on two fronts. Geographically, the Birmingham venue

should attract visitors who are prepared to travel further North to the Harrogate Flooring

Show. But more interesting for exhibitiors is the large number of interiors specialists, designers,

architects and specifiers that the event attracts.

Flooring retailers who visit will get the chance to look across a broad spectrum on interiors

businesses to identify trends and ideas in flooringcovering and beyond.

Kingsmead Carpets have announced the appointment of two newterritory managers.

Ken Matthew formerly with MCD Wales will now look after the SouthWales territory as an agent.

Polypropylene carpet prices are set to rise by up to 7% as raw material

prices go through the roof, says the UK’s biggest retailer Carpetright.

The rise, expected in the first quarter of 2011, reflects a cost increasein polypropylene to approximately £1,200 per ton from £740 per tonin 2009, says the company.

“Everyone has got inflation going on,” said Lord Harris in a report onhalf year performance last month. “I think that carpets will be up 6 to 7 %in February, March and April. That will not be because of VAT, it will bebecause of the increase in raw materials.”

Carpetright, who run over 700 stores in the UK and Europe, werereporting a 28% fall in half-year underlying profits to £10m on saleswhich were 4% down to £248m.

Commenting on the prospects for 2011, Lord Harris added: “I think it isgoing to be a difficult year. The housing market is not going great andwe also have the public sector cuts.”

Add to increased wool prices, carpet inflation is set to out-perform theretail average.

The floorcoverings industry is bemoaning the scarcity of bank lending to

businesses but market analysts Plimsoll argue that the banks are right –

many companies in the market are just not worth the risk.

Recent high profile failures in other sectors such as the travel andconstruction sectors show the danger of operating on micro profitmargins and the same thing could be heading to the floor coveringsindustry in 2011. 657 companies in the market exist on low profit marginsof less than 1.5% with 457 of these making a loss. Any bump in the roadwill be enough to see them fail because they cannot rely on cheap creditto see them through anymore, says Plimsoll.

Of course, there are some perfectly good companies being turned downand it is essential that banks should play their part in getting businessmoving again. However, nobody should blame them for refusing credit tocompanies that might not be able to pay it back. It also seems that debtlevels have little to do with the ability to secure funding. Even companieswith minimal or no debt are struggling to get credit if they have thinmargins. There is simply deemed to be too much risk attached.

Although advances in technology has vastly increased

the choice of finishes available for laminate flooring,

the UK's favourite remains that of oak. This is not as

mundane as it seems, however, as suppliers have

introduced a number of effects to give their product

increased competitive edge.

Oak Bretagne from Faus is one example of this, incorporatingmarquetry design within its Wideplank system that allows the floorto be laid using the 'plank within a plank' concept (120cm x 140cm),eliminating visual linear joint patterns and allowing a more efficientinstallation.

The 8mm thick flooring is designed to give additional floor stabilityand, when combined with high durability of the product, allows thecompany to provide a 25 year guarantee. The patented Fausembossing technique has also been developed to create the Realfeelvisual and tactile effect. Further authenticity is also provided by thepatented Microbevel, giving additional emphasis to the plank strips.

Another option is Lamin8 from Kenton Floors, which includes Vintage Oakamong its choice of designs. The company has developed its Woodpeckerrange of flooring, which incorporates Lamin8, to provide an alternative choice

from the leading brands. This provides retailers with the option of improvedmargin, says Kenton Floors, when compared to brands that have reached thepoint of saturation coverage.

Lamin8 includes a wide range of colours in 7, 8 and 12mm thicknessin a variety of widths and styles, produced to AC5 heavy commercialrating. The company states consumers like the heavier feel of theproduct when comparing it to real wood alternatives.

Parquet Palazzo from Quick-Step recently impressed the judges inthe House Beautiful Awards, where it won the Gold award in theBest Flooring category. The judging panel included Jeff Banks, KellyHopen and House Beautiful editor Julia Goodwin, who chose theproduct over nominations from other leading brands.

Quick-Step international communications and sponsorship manager,Philiep Caryn attended the ceremony: 'The House Beautiful Awardsare always hotly contested and they are regarded as some of thefinest in the home interest market. It is an absolute delight to be onthe same plane as Gold winners such as well known internationalbrand names Sandersons, Bosch, NEFF, The Conran Shop.'

The ceremony attracted more than 300 guests and saw on stageappearances from Jeff Banks, Oliver Heath, Sophie Conran andTommy Walsh and was held at London's Royal Opera House.

Pergo has produced luxury laminate flooring for more than 30 yearsand states that natural oak has been one of its most popular designs. It offers over 90 oak designs varying from light to dark. Thepopularity of oak is due to its aspirational, clean, fuss-free aesthetic, allowing the wood to complement and blend with a multitude ofinterior designs, says the company.
