Since 1997, the AthFest music festival has taken over the downtown Athens area, hosting local bands and raising money for charities that support local arts and music. Starting with just 60 bands, the festival has grown to become one of the premiere music and art events in the South.

This year, over 150 bands will converge on downtown Athens from June 25th to June 28th along with other events in the weeks leading up to the main event. The teaser events include several film festi-vals at Ciné and the Flagpoll Reader’s Choice Awards. The biggest change to this year’s format is two main outdoor stages. This is due in part to the loss of the Georgia Theater as a major venue. The fire that gutted the music hall last year happened just weeks before Athfest and caused a last minute scramble to find venues for the headliners who were supposed to appear there. This year the outdoor stages will be on Pulaski Street and Lumpkin Street. In addition to the music, there will also be a kid’s festival and a large outdoor art show/sale.

The outdoor festivals are free, and a wristband can be pre-purchased for $15 that includes access to all the indoor venues, provided the club is not at full occupancy and that the wearer meets the age requirements for each establishment (many of the venues are 21+). If you are interested in volunteer-ing, you can still register until June 14th.

Fun and Funky Treat: Glowing Jell-O

Green Goodness All Purpose Green Home Cleaner: 1 spray bottle 1 ½ cups distilled white vinegar 2 cups of water 10-12 drops of your favorite essential oil, i.e. lavender, eucalyptus, jasmine (optional) How To: Fill your spray bottle with all ingredients. Shake to combine (and give a little shake be-fore each use). Use to clean surfaces in and around the house like kitchen counter tops, refrigerator handles and appliances, to keep porcelain and fixtures shining bright. Follow with a clean cloth for a bright shine! You can use the above recipe for some of the following household duties. Tougher jobs may call for straight vinegar: 1. Clean and wipe down kitchen countertops, cutting boards and refrigerator and freezer handles. 2. Clean bathroom surfaces (If you need some scrubbing action, put some baking soda in a bowl and pour

some of the above mixture in, stir to combine and scrub away!) 3. For stubborn hard water deposits on faucets/shower heads, fill a plastic bag with enough distilled white

vinegar to completely cover the fixture and let it soak overnight or for eight hours.

Cleaning Tips

No matter what flavor/color of Jell-O you use, it will glow bright blue under the black light. This is the fluorescence of the quinine in the tonic water. Quinine also gives tonic water a distinctive bitter flavor which you will also taste in the gelatin. If you don't like the taste, you can lessen it by using half tonic water and half tap water in the recipe. Either sugar-free or regular tonic water works fine for this recipe. Make the Jell-O 1. Basically you just follow the directions on the package, except use tonic water instead of

water. 2. For a small package, the usual directions would be to heat 1 cup of tonic water to boil-

ing. 3. Mix the boiling tonic water and Jell-O until the powder is completely dissolved. 4. Stir in another cup of tonic water. 5. Pour the liquid into a pan or bowl. 6. Refrigerate the Jell-O until is has set. 7. You can use cookie cutters to make shapes out of the gelatin, if desired. 8. Shine a black light on the Jell-O to make it glow.
