Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT:

Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ

It was a very blessed weekend for us as we had the “Bishop’s Confirmation Retreat” at Camp Mokuleia

for the Hawaii District Youth on September 22-24, 2017. There were over 130 people who were there to learn,

praise and serve together.

The praise music helped us to open our hearts and minds to God as well as to our brothers and sisters who

were there. Messages from the Bishop and the District Superintendents inspired us to learn more about God and

compelled us to respond to God’s call for his people in our community and beyond community. Joyous games

brought us together and helped us to share laughter that demolished the boundaries of race and fear between us.

Three workshops: Baptismal Identity, Prayer, and Social Justice were uniquly different. It taught us who we are

and whose we are and how to pray and how to involve social issues for serving for our brothers and sisters who are

marginalized in our society though our concious involvement and sensitivity.

Yes, we had a foretaste of the Kingdom of God through the retreat. God’s spirit was there to lead, teach and

bless us. The retreat created the Moment, God’s moment to our young people. The mission of our local church is

that we need to creat more moments which will lead into the movement for our young people. The movement will

guide their lives to be a faithful disciples of Jesus Christ for transformation of the world. I hope this experience is

not only a one time mountain top moment, but a life lasting movement for them and the church.

Here is a poem that tells us how to find happiness in the journey of life:

"Dance, like no one is watching you. Love, like you've never been hurt before.

Sing, like no one can hear you. Work, like you don't need money.

Live, like heaven is on earth.”

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT LAY LEADER

Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christ of the Hawaii District United Methodist Church!

How is it with your soul? In the past 8 days, I’ve attended three memorial services for friends’ parents

and a spouse. In the past few weeks, our faith has been challenged to deal with the devastation of Hurri-

canes Harvey and Irma, and President Trump’s announcement to work toward rescinding Deferred Ac-

tion for Childhood Arrivals in six months. Through this, we know that God is with us, that He wants us to make loving,

merciful and just decisions in whatever we do. Praise Him for the lives of loved ones who reside in Heaven with Him

now, and for the generosity and compassion of people and organizations who are helping the victims of Harvey and Ir-

ma. Pray for our President and Congress to make bridge-building decisions that impact our communities and our be-

loved country. In all things, pray unceasingly!

And now…continuing on, as I mentioned in the previous Ka Leo article, in support of Bishop Hagiya’s

vision for our Cal-Pac Conference and our local churches. Please allow me to share some ideas and quotes of Pastor

Ron Edmondson, who leads a Baptist church, is a church planter, and wrote an article for the website Ministry Matters.

In encouraging new, young leaders, he suggests that instead of assigning them tasks to complete, give them a vision. He

writes, “Leaders want to work towards a vision more than they want to complete a set of tasks. Leaders want to join a

great vision, then help develop the tasks to accomplish it. Leaders get excited about faith-stretching, bigger-than-life,

jaw-dropping acts of courage. …So if you want to create a successful organization and recruit leaders, hand people a

big vision with lots of room for them to choose on the implementation side.”

What’s your local church’s vision, and how are you working toward achieving it? As an “auntie” to a

niece and nephew who went to Christian nursery schools but who, as teenagers now, don’t attend church, I pray for their

future. They know of God and Jesus, but they don’t know God and Jesus. I ask myself, “How will their faith be devel-

oped and nurtured? How can I interest them in learning more about God and Jesus?” Can my local church work toward

visioning how to attract the unchurched like my niece and nephew? What do you see around you that would help your

local church work toward a vision?

From September 22 to 24, I have the privilege of being a counselor at the Bishop’s Confirmation Re-

treat. I’m excited and thankful for this opportunity. It will be interesting, to say the least, to be around young people

who attend church and are facing doubts and at the same time, affirmation, of their Christian faith. Thanks be to God for

this retreat and for the opportunity it brings to transform the lives of our young people! And Praise the Lord for our

Young Adults who are coordinating and assisting with the programming of this retreat!

“Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imag-

ine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21).

The Kingdom of God By Rev. Andrew Lee

Cambodia is famous for a lot of things. Besides Ankor Wat, the famous historical temples in Siem Reap, each province has products that are special to their region. I was told that if you visit Svay Rieng (a region that is close to the Vietnamese border) in March-April, you’ll be greeted with the world’s best mangoes ever. I visited Svay Rieng in the last week of July to visit some of the Methodist churches there and in one of the churches, I was greeted with a big mango tree. It was out of season so no mangoes were visible but it did offer a great shade from the blazing heat of the afternoon. Rev. Ouksaroeun of the church told me that 20 years ago, a visitor gave him $20 to buy and plant some mango trees. He planted small mango trees that grew big enough to provide not only won-derful shade from heat but also delicious fruit when it’s in season. This reminded me of the parable of the mustard seed from Matthew 13. The picture of a small seed that grew to provide fruit as well as shade. This is the pic-ture of the Kingdom of God. When Jesus started his ministry, he started off in a small village with a small number of people. Despite the magnitude of his pow-er, he was humble and peaceful that his love, hope, and peace flowed out quietly to touch many, many

lives… even us in the year 2017. It’s been 2 months since my family and I arrived in Cambodia. It is my prayer to partake in ministry here with the love and heart of Jesus. I want to be faithful and genuine in all that I do. Just as a small mango tree grew to be a big and fruitful tree, I have no doubt that God is working in this country to bear much fruit for His Kingdom. Please continue to pray for Cambodia
