The community of HVOTP (Hawthorne Village on the Park) has quickly grown to be one of the largest connected communities in Milton. Between the local website, HVOTP.com, and the Facebook group, HVOTP has become one of the most tightly knit communities to live in.

If you’re reading this newsletter, you’re in Hawthorne Village on the Park!

In an effort to keep people informed of community events and developments we’re taking this newsletter digital! While we will continue to send out a paper copy monthly, we encourage you to check out the HVOTP.com/Newsletter to sign up for the electronic copy. In addition to receiving this via email each month, we’ll be able to send you reminders and notifications of local events.

We recently had a community clean-up day where residents helped clean up our local paths and parks. Events like this are a success when everybody gets involved and we send a big THANK YOU to those of you who joined.

Be sure to join us at the next event! Sign up for notifications today at HVOTP.com/newsletter or text/call Adrian at (416) 707-8401 for help signing up.

Staging for Success

KNOW THE RISKS No matter where you live, your region may be susceptible to one or more emergency situations or weather hazards,

surges and winter storms. Although some of these events—like winter storms—may provide some advanced warning, others—like earthquakes—are hard to predict. Most of these occurrences may lead to extended power outages; however, if you live in an area where they are likely, having a plan will help you prepare for the next event.

Other emergencies can happen at any time, such as a house

DECIDE ON AN EMERGENCY MEETING PLACEEmergency situations are chaotic. In the midst of the confusion,

a meeting place with your family ahead of time to reduce some of the initial stress. Choose three locations: one in the neighbourhood, one in your town and one out-of-town, and make sure everyone knows how to get there. Your safe area may vary depending on the emergency—for example, in the event of an earthquake, stay away from exterior walls, windows,

a desk or table and hold onto it until the shaking stops.

MAKE A PLANMake a plan that outlines all the information you’ll need to know in the event of an emergency. Not only will it help you get to a safe location, it’ll also allow you to let your loved ones know you’re safe.

1. Create a spreadsheet that includes:

• Names and nicknames of each family member• Phone numbers• Email addresses• Names of doctors• Places of work• Schools

2. Plan a safe evacuation route.

If you’re home when an emergency occurs, you may have to evacuate with little to no notice. Select several safe evacuation routes, and make sure everyone is familiar with them.

3. Assign roles.

and electricity, while another person packs the important documents and another grabs pets. Giving everyone a responsibility will ensure nothing important is left behind.

How to

Prepare for an EmergencyAlthough three-quarters of Canadians say they’re prepared to handle any emergency, the statistics say otherwise: 60% of Canadians have created a home emergency escape plan, 55% have a plan for getting in touch with their family members if they’re separated and 53% keep copies of important documents in a safe place.1 While it’s almost impossible to predict when an emergency or natural disaster will occur, creating a plan may help keep your family safe in the event of one. The better prepared you are, the more comfortable you’ll be if you have to put your plan into action.

We’re Going Digital!

One area that’s often neglected when preparing your home for sale is the closet!

Whether it’s your foyer closet, walk-in closet or linen closet, make sure that you take the time to neatly organize the shelves and reduce the amount of hanging items.

Cluttered closets suggest that there’s a lack of storage in the home while neatly organized and clean closets make the space feel larger and more functional.

Organizing things into decorative baskets, keeping like-colours folded neatly and reducing the amount of loose items is key to achieving the perfect look.
