“Making broadcast radio like an app”

Page 6: The World’s Greatest Apps - Annika Nyberg

Why this project?

•Listeners want reliable, consistent and free radio from well known stations•Listeners want radio on their mobile devices•Broadcast Radio (FM, DAB, DAB+, HD) works, and broadcasters are committed to widespread networks•Hybrid (Broadcast Radio + IP connectivity) will deliver a much improved user experience

Smart Radio initiative – why?

1. Radio needs a broadcast backbone2. The future of radio lies in using the combination of

broadband and broadcast – not one or the other3. Radio has to be where the users are – above all in mobile

phones and tablets4. It needs to be there as broadcast – FM, DAB, DAB+,DMB - it

is so much more beneficial for the listeners

LTE-A in Holland (1,000,0000 listeners peak capacity): 38,500 transmitters to cover 31,000 km²

DAB+ in Holland (unlimited peak capacity):30 transmitters to cover 31,000 km²

NETHERLANDS

Page 9: The World’s Greatest Apps - Annika Nyberg

All radio listening each year in Sweden = 270 billion minutes (190,000 Terabytes).

That is more data than carried by all MNO networks in 2012.

The transport cost would be € 860 million (4.5 € /GB).

Compare that to the cost usingbroadcasting on the terrestrial network€ 10-20 million

It doesn't make financial sense to air the same content via LTE when it is already being broadcasted live via analogue or digital radio. Double distribution is costly and unnecessary.

On the receiver’s side…

Battery life, streaming via 3G:6 hours, 53 minutes.

Battery life, broadcasting via FM: 48 hours, 12 minutes.

= 7 times longer battery life. What if 50 million people stream?

The more data streamed via IP, the lower the quality…

-Arguments for MNO:s, politicians, mobile phone manufacturers-Most important – the consumer, the consumer experience and the promise to them

1. A lot of extra content 2. Free to air radio to their mobiles 3. Longer battery life 4. More bandwidth to everyone as live radio won’t consume it 5. A pocket device that will always receive info
