This course is specifically designed for FUTURE ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS.

COURSE ORIENTATION

It covers the STUDY AND APPLICATION of different approaches, methods, and techniques in using theater arts in language teaching.

It also includes various strategies and exercises in consonance with the PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL NATURE OF THE COURSE in teaching theater arts to aspiring language teachers.

WHAT DO ACTORS AND LANGUAGE LEARNERS HAVE IN COMMON?

Since the art of acting involves so much language learning, language learners can benefit from being students of acting.

Actors are students of language.

The goal of the Actors is to DELIVER EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE while Students’ target is TO COMMUNICATE THE INTENDED, APPROPRIATE MESSAGE.

WHAT DO LANGUAGE TEACHERS AND PLAY DIRECTORS HAVE IN COMMON?

Language Teachers and Play Directors handle the same sensitive aspects of Human Dynamics.

Ego and self-esteem are on the line in the language classroom much as they are in the emotion-charged drama rehearsal.

Direction:Read the information given in the different situations. Then with a partner, practice the dialogues between two friends . Use prominence and intonation to express the different meanings.

Both A and B are male. They are friends and are approximately the same age. A is pleased to hear that his friend is back from his trip.

SITUATION 1

A: So you’re back from your trip?B: Yes, I got back two days ago.A: Nice of you to call. I hadn’t expected to hear from you so soon.B: Oh, well, I thought I’d just call and see how you were doing.A: Fine, just fine.

SITUATION 2Both A and B are female. A is B’s mother. She’s a bit upset that her daughter hasn’t bothered to call her since returning from her trip.

A: So you’re back from your trip?B: Yes, I got back two days ago.A: Nice of you to call. I hadn’t expected to hear from you so soon.B: Oh, well, I thought I’d just call and see how you were doing.A: Fine, just fine.

SITUATION 3A is male; B is female. He and B have been in a serious relationship for over a year now. He’s slightly older than she is, and tends to be the jealous type. He’s furious that she didn’t call him immediately upon her return from her trip.A: So you’re back from your trip?

B: Yes, I got back two days ago.A: Nice of you to call. I hadn’t expected to hear from you so soon.B: Oh, well, I thought I’d just call and see how you were doing.A: Fine, just fine.
