From a Marianist Community of student brothers open to visitors for Sunday Eucharist, Queen of Apostles Community emerged as a non-territorial parish on August 28, 1973.

Continuing in the tradition of the Marianist Charism, we come together each week as a family of Catholic, Christian believers, to worship our God in the Eucharist with song & praise and to share in the breaking of the Bread. In so doing, we proclaim our willingness to build a community of love and to be the holy people God calls us to be.

If you are visiting and worshipping with us for the first time, we extend to you our warmest welcome. Our prayer is that your worship experience will be uplifting and Spirit filled. We hope you will visit us often and worship with us!

If you would like more information about us or are interested in joining our Community, please fill out the form on the back cover and drop it in the collection basket! NOTE: If the form on the back is missing, email [email protected] with your name, phone number, address and we’ll contact you.

Marianist Doxology May the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all places

    through the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

    Stewardship & Giving

Third Sunday of Advent: “Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:16 – 18. This scripture reading sums up Stewardship. “Rejoice always” means place your trust in God; He will provide all that you need. “Pray constantly” means prayer should be a running conversation with God throughout the whole day, every day. “Give thanks in all circumstances” means even in bad situations, thank God. Suffering a little bit helps build empathy for others in similar situations and shows our dependence on God.

Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11: The Lord’s servant has a noble and exalted task: proclaim God’s favor and vindication. We can depend on God to keep the promises made through the centuries: As sure as the earth brings forth life, so will all nations experience God’s perfect justice.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24: Christian joy is profound, deep, unshakable, permanent. And being a joyful Christian doesn’t mean that we cannot feel sorrow, grief or sadness. The truly joyful person feels these emotions very deeply—and expresses them without embarrassment. Paul speaks of the kind of joy that endures...the kind of joy that comes with Advent hope, the sure belief that God’s promises to us will be fulfilled.

John 1:6-8, 19-28: The gospel writer makes it very clear that the mission of John is: to prepare the way for the one who would baptize with more than water, indeed, with the very life of God. It is John the Baptist who cries out ecstatically, “Behold the Lamb of God.” It was John who knew that his only function was to “testify to the light.” Not the darkness of sorrow, guilt, and fear, but light!

    * * * COMMUNITY INFORMATION * * *

A PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION: Lord Jesus Christ, you promised to be with your church always, until the end of time. We long to experience your presence more deeply and more intimately, even when we cannot gather in person as church to celebrate Eucharist.

We believe that you are present when we gather to worship.

We believe you are present in your ordained minister and in your sacred word when the scriptures are proclaimed.

And we believe you are present when your sacred body and blood become our food and drink. Our relationship with you is truly grace.

When we are not able to be physically present at the Eucharist with the community, help us to strengthen and deepen our relationship with you as we seek to encounter and serve you, not only prayer but in all we meet, especially in the poor and needy of our world. Amen

PRAYER INTENTIONS: During this health crisis time, you are invited to email any prayer intentions to our Community. If you have intentions you’d like made known in a more specific way, let me know so Deacon Greg can share them with QAC and let him know whether or not you’d like your name included... email [email protected].

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS COLLECTION – TODAY! Today, many religious communities lack adequate retirement savings. Despite ongoing generosity to the annual appeal, hundreds of religious communities struggle to provide for older members. The National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO) coordinates the annual Retirement Fund for Religious collection and distributes the proceeds to eligible religious communities. It also offers educational programming,

LOW GLUTEN HOSTS are available at our Masses. If you are in need of the low gluten host because of gluten intolerance, come to the Eucharistic minister standing to the right of the tabernacle when Communion distribution begins.

services and resources that enable religious communities to evaluate and prepare for long-term retirement needs. Please give generously for all the sacrifices our retired religious have made for us through their lives of service. There is a collection box in the vestibule. Make checks out to QAC with ‘Retired Religious’ on the memo line. See Page 14 for more information.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SHELTER: As the weather cools, most needed are cold weather clothing (coats, boots, sweaters, gloves, warm socks, hats, long underwear, etc.) for children, men, and women. Additionally, COVID-19 drives a need to launder bedding in the shelters more often, so twin-size bedding is needed. Of course, they still have use for other donations like shelf-stable food [canned chicken, tuna or other fish, peanut butter, canned beans, canned vegetables (large #10 cans preferred) "cream" soups for casseroles (cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, cream of celery) regular ground coffee, instant mashed potatoes, and condiments (ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce)] and new or gently used clothing, towels, etc., and toiletries and underwear are also always needed.

GIVING TO ST VINCENT DE PAUL FROM YOUR HOME: For any of you who are attending QAC virtually but may still want to support St. Vincent de Paul of Dayton, they have a Wish List identified on Amazon. This provides the opportunity for any of us to make a donation at any time without having to wonder what they need the most or how to get it there. The Wish List has a card of 12 toothbrushes for $6.95 or 36 razors for $9.96, so they have selected items wisely. You can find the list at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2WKD1L4SC2TIN?ref_=wl_share Thank you!

INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK/SCHNEIDER HOUSE OF HOPE COOKING MINISTRY: Please Help! We are looking for QAC volunteers to join this cooking ministry. Specifically, we need at least two to three individuals/households to partner with existing cooking teams, whose members have moved on to other ministries.

This cooking ministry started in 2012. QAC Cooking Ministry teams provide meals at the shelter four weeks a year, each team taking one day of the week. Each team is usually made up of two households and meal plans are coordinated among the teams. The food is prepared at their homes and delivered to the shelter cooked and ready to serve around 5:30 p.m. This ministry provides an opportunity to serve and interact with those who have fallen on hard times. However, during this pandemic year, the food is delivered only to the side porch prior to dinner to protect everyone. Anyone who is interested in being part of this ministry, email [email protected].

RESERVATIONS FOR CHRISTMAS EVE MASS: Reservations will be taken for our Christmas Eve Mass. In order to stay within our guidelines for COVID precautions, only 75 people may be in attendance. The mass will be live streamed in addition. Please contact Marilyn Nagle at [email protected] to make a reservation as soon as possible.

ATTENTION AOL USERS: We have received a large number of “undeliverable” notices coming to the office from those who use AOL. If you are having trouble receiving email from QAC and use AOL, please add [email protected] to your address/contact list as this should fix the problem. Also check your Trash or Spam files to see if you have messages from QAC listed. We don’t want you

to miss out on any important events happening at QAC!

QAC MEMBERS AND THE PANDEMIC: We are now in the tenth month of direct impact of the pandemic. The Social Justice Committee has funds to help those in our community who may have been financially impacted such that they could use some assistance based upon the pandemic. Some members of QAC have made donations which have been designated by the donors to be dedicated to meeting needs of QAC members who have been adversely impacted by the pandemic. Social Justice Ministry is grateful for the kind donations.

If you are struggling to balance potentially increased expenses caused by the pandemic while suffering decreased income due to the shelter/isolate at home rules imposed for safety by the State of Ohio, we would like to help. If you need assistance with groceries, other essential needs, or if you are housebound and unable to purchase necessities as a sole caregiver, please let us know if we can help. If you think our Social Justice Ministry may be able to help, please contact the Community Ministry (either Chris Sitko or Sharie McKenny). Your situation will be held in confidence.

ADVENT GIVING TREE: Is in the vestibule. If you haven’t selected an “ornament,” there is still time. We are supporting Elizabeth’s New Life Center, the Dakota Center, Good Life Ministries Life Recovery Center, and the Malawi Scholarship Program (through Change And Be Changed). Gifts listed on Pages 12 & 13 for these charities can be returned thru Dec 31st. Contact Terri Blanken, [email protected] or Kevin Murnane at [email protected] for pickup.

GOOD USE FOR UNSOLICITED CALENDARS: This is the time of year when many of us receive enough beautiful unsolicited calendars to paper a room. Rather than throw all of those gorgeous but unneeded calendars in our recycling cans, bring them to QAC so that Mary Hallinan can use them in various programs she does in the jails. Reach out to others and help the earth – win/win! A marked gray bin is available in the Vestibule at the check in table. Thank you!

SUBSTANCE DISORDER SUPPORT GROUP: Meetings (open to all) - every Tuesday, 6:30-8:00pm, Si Lounge Family Room. Please contact Terri Blanken, 937-723-0151, if you have questions.

ADULT FAITH ENRICHMENT: Adult Faith Enrichment will present Advent Reflections.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DAYS ARE HERE: If anyone at QAC is upgrading her/his computers, we (Elisabeth & Thomas Hangartner) would love to have the old laptops for Malawi. Jack Simpson has been very helpful in the past by checking the machines out before we take/send them to Africa...so please see Jack if you have a computer or two for us! Thank you! Thomas & Elisabeth Hangartner

SONNET: My soul is shouting that the Lord is great,

my spirit is rejoicing: God is best! For he has seen me in my low estate,

from now on, everyone will call me blessed. For mighty God has done great things for me,

his mercy is for those who love his name, for he has shown his strength and majesty,

the proud in heart have all been brought to shame. The mighty have been toppled from their thrones,

the weak and feeble seated there instead: The rich sent off with nothing, all alone,

the poor and hungry welcomed in and fed. For God remembers what he said before:

His promises to Israel, evermore. From Amy Scott Robinson:

A LITTLE HUMOR: Q: What does Rudolph run to every December morning up until Christmas? A: His Advent calen-deer.

Q: How many Christmas trees can you plant on an empty farm? A: One, because then the farm isn’t empty anymore.

Q: What goes ho-ho whoosh, ho-ho whoosh? A: Santa caught in a revolving door

Q: Which Christmas carol do parents like the most? A: Silent Night

    AFFIRMATION Creed

    Please respond: I Believe

Do you believe in God, Whom we do not see, Whom we call Creator of all that is,

Whom the prophets saw – as one who nurtures us? /:R

Do you believe in this God Who we do not see Whose Son became one of us by the Virgin Mary

and was named Jesus. Who taught us by word and example the way of being neighbor, Who suffered, died and rose that we

    might have eternal life? /:R

Do you believe in the Spirit Whom we cannot see because of the Scriptures the Spirit inspired, because of people who live by that message and because we can hear the voice of

the Spirit in our silence? /:R

Do you believe that baptism makes us daughters and sons of God – brothers and sisters of each other. And do you believe in the Church we do see, with its saints and sinners, because it has

given us God’s Word and gathers us in the breaking of the bread and in the forgiveness of sins? /:R

Do you believe that Jesus, Who rose from the dead, is faithful to His promises, and one day we will rise from the dead

    unto life everlasting? /:R

This is our faith. We profess it in the name of Jesus. Amen

RETIRED FUND for RELIGIOUS: The NEED....Across the United States, hundreds of religious communities lack financial resources sufficient to meet the retirement and health-care needs of aging members.

Lack of Funds - Many elder religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a large gap in retirement savings. At the same time, fewer religious are able to serve in compensated ministry. Of 542 communities providing data to the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO), only 33 are adequately funded for retirement.

Historically, Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests—known collectively as women and men religious—received small stipends that just met the needs of the day. Any surplus funds were reinvested in ministry and the education of younger members. As a result, hundreds of US religious communities lack adequate retirement savings. At the same time, the income available to support older religious is decreasing. Currently, earnings from the ministries of younger religious cover a significant portion of eldercare expenses, but the number of religious able to serve in compensated ministry is rapidly diminishing

Rising Costs - Like many Americans, religious communities face the monumental challenge of funding eldercare. Currently, the average annual cost of care for women and men religious past age 70 is $47,000 per person. Skilled care can reach more than $69,000. The total cost of care for senior women and men religious in the United States has exceeded $1 billion annually for each of the last 11 years.

Changing Demographics - By 2029, retired religious are projected to outnumber wage-earners by nearly three to one. During the early and mid-twentieth centuries, the Catholic Church in the United States experienced a surge in vocations to religious life, with numbers peaking in the mid-1960s. Care for elderly members was provided largely by younger ones. Over time, however, the number of vocations decreased while lifespans increased. The result is far fewer younger members available to support the retirement and eldercare needs of senior members. In 2019, 72 percent of the religious communities providing data to the NRRO had a median age of 70 or older.
