Teen Tech Week (TTW) was celebrated at PFTSTA from March 10 to March 14

This year we included a battle of the books along with our other TTW activities.

School Library Journal (SLJ) selects the books, sets up the brackets, and picks

author judges for the 15 battles held in four rounds. At PFTSTA we held a Mock BOB,

but we sent SLJ updates to the books that the students selected as their winners.

These did not always match the choices of the author judges. SLJ highlighted the

school in several online articles which you can find here: http://brief.ly/~IAIha. We

are currently running Round 3 online, and the student defenders made videos to

champion their books. You can view the videos for Round 3 here:

http://bit.ly/1oq5NgS.

Below are some pictures from some of the different events held during TTW.

Mary Ann Yacoub presents her book in hopes that the audience will vote for it In Battle 4 of the Mock

Taylor Tigers Tour Nation’s Capital by Lisa Valence

Twenty-five students, five

parents, and two teachers

had a wonderful time in

Washington DC for four

days. Up at 6:30am and

returning to the hotel at

9pm, it was a non-stop

pace. Some of the

highlights were the

Smithsonian, Newseum,

Holocaust Museum, Mt.

Vernon, and many

monuments, which we

saw by moonlight.

Everywhere we went the

teachers, Mrs. Valence

and Mrs. Maher, were told

what great students we

have at Taylor. It was a

trip of a lifetime!

TALENTED IN THE ARTS by Linda Patrick

Many of the Talent Art students are participating in Louisiana’s Environmental

Awareness Student Art Contest with the theme “Watersheds: From My Back Yard to

the Ocean.” Students not only had to create compelling visual art for this endeavor,

but they had to express the large concepts involved: the unity of all life in

dependence on the earth’s waters, and the importance of everyone in keeping our

water clean. They really have shown their deep understanding as well as their visual

creativity with this project! When the artwork is returned I will be able to put it on

display.

Musings on MOOCs

In the August edition of Tidings from Taylor, I wrote about videonot.es:

http://www.videonot.es/ is a tool that allows you to load any YouTube video on the left

side of your screen and take notes on the right. What makes this tool even more

useful is that your notes are synced to your Google Drive, which allows you to

collaborate with others and also access your videono.es from multiple devices. A

large number of educational resources, including Khan Academy:

https://www.khanacademy.org/, TedEd: http://ed.ted.com/, and multiple massive

online open courses (MOOCs) offered by some of the top universities like Harvard

and MIT through entities like Coursera: https://www.coursera.org/,

Udacity: https://www.udacity.com/ , and edX: https://www.edx.org/,are hosting their

videos on YouTube.

MOOCs are open access, online courses that allow limitless participation. Anyone

who has an Internet connection and a will to learn is welcome. The courses offered

through MOOCs are numerous and diverse. Some are self-paced, while others have

a start and end date. Many offer choices in cost and involvement. For example, most

MOOCs offer a free to audit option, as well as a free or paid for certificate, and

sometimes college credit (assuming satisfactory completion of work on all required

assignments). MOOCs allow you to take a course that isn’t offered at your school or

supplement courses you are already taking.

One of my favorites MOOCs is Harvard’s popular CS50 course:

https://www.edx.org/course/harvardx/harvardx-cs50x-introduction-computer-

1022#.UzmJ_6hdUrX offered though edX. The course is self-paced and designed for

people who do not have any prior coding experience. The course begins with the

basics of how computers work before moving through the languages C, PHP, and

JavaScript plus SQL, CSS, and HTML. Other topics covered in CS50 include

abstraction, algorithms, data structures, encapsulation, resource management,

security, software engineering, and web development. Students who earn a

satisfactory score on nine problem sets and a final project will earn a certificate from

HarvardX.

If you’re interested in more information about MOOCs, you may want to watch “Why massive

open online courses (still) matter”:

National Honor Society by Nick Dang

The month of March has been an exciting time for the Patrick F. Taylor chapter of

National Honor Society. On the 13th, the chapter held its annual induction ceremony

for new members. The winners of each office for the 2014-2015 year were also

announced at this event. Fifteen sophomores were inducted into the society: Justin

Brown, Brandon Bui, George Evangeloulis, Jason Hall, Suliman Hamed, Kiara Horton,

Justin Lightsey, Vy Mai, Alexandra Miserendino, Marissa Nguyen, Madison Pierce,

Valerie Ruiz, Samuel Tejeda, Rayne Torry, and Ariel Walker. One junior was also

inducted: Sarah Allred.

The new officers of PFTSTA’s Honor Society are as follows: president, Sydney Monix;

vice president, Kayla Tarr; secretary, Edward Johnson; and historian, Jazmine Wells.

The new officers are excited and are already getting ready to lead the chapter into

the new school year. The chapter is still continuing their volunteering efforts with

several events lined

up for the end of the

school year. Mission

Ignition is continuing

and Patrick F Taylor

has had a strong

showing at each of

the weekend

“missions.” Also, the

new officers are

already planning to

participate in the

Rubber Duck Derby

to support Second

Harvest Food Bank

in May.

New officers from left to right: Sydney Monix, Edward Johnson, and Kayla Tarr

The newly

inducted

members

7th Grade Science News by Katie Higgins

Mrs. Higgins’ 7th grade Science students are making the final touches to their

Science Extravaganza projects! The Science Extravaganza will take place on

Monday, April 14th and Tuesday, April 15th from 9:30am-11:30am. Fourth grade

students from both the westbank and eastbank advanced academies will be

attending this event. They will be taught hands-on science demonstrations by the

7th grade students and participate in an interactive event in the library. Parents of

the 7th grade students are also invited to the event.

Ninth Ward Field Trip by Meghan Ritter

In February, seventh grade students read the Jewell Parker Rhodes novel Ninth

Ward, a fictional account of a young girl’s experiences during Hurricane Katrina –

with a supernatural twist. The seventh grade students of Van Meter, Iowa, a tiny

town with a population of only 1,094 as of 2012, also read Ninth Ward. Ms. Kahn,

Ms. Bordelon, and Ms. Valence established the connection between the two schools

in 2011, and Taylor and Van Meter students have been using technology to share

their thoughts on Rhodes’ Ninth Ward -- and the events and culture that inspired it -

- since.

As part of

their study

of Hurricane

Katrina and

the Ninth

Ward

community,

seventh

graders

took a tour

of the Ninth

Ward on

March 26th.

Some of the

sights the

students

visited and

photograph

ed were

Musician’s

Village, Brad Pitt’s Make it Right Houses, and William Frantz Elementary School, one

of the first all-white schools in the South to integrate. Students also visited Martin

Luther King Elementary, where Taylor students treated the first grade class to a

puppet show and ‘Reading Buddy’ activity. Throughout the trip, students recorded

their experiences using iPhones, iPads, cameras, and other devices. Students will

use these pictures to create a multimedia presentation, which will be shared with

the students of Van Meter.

Both the novel and the field trip have provided our students with a valuable learning

experience. Students, teachers, and chaperones all had a wonderful time. Thanks to

Ms. Bordelon, the books and trip were fully funded by a grant.

A Note from Maestro McCloskey

Greetings Taylor Tigers:

It feels like just yesterday that we were beginning the school year, and already April

is here. Before we know it, we will be on summer break. With the conclusion of

another school year comes a new beginning for our graduating seniors.

The band’s graduating class is a very special group of students. They are

hardworking, intelligent, and accomplished. I will miss these students tremendously,

and I wish them the very best in their future endeavors. This group of students has

been the glue that holds the band program together, and I am grateful for their

service to the band and the school.

For those of you who don’t know the graduating band members, they are Tameka

Aych, Ashley Moise, Alexandra Pollard, Madison Rolig, Celia Zaeringer, and our

resident concert pianist Seth Vicknair.

All of these students have earned various scholarships for school; however, three

students have earned music scholarships. Alexandra and Madison have both secured

music scholarships at University of Louisiana at Lafayette and will be performers

with the Ragin’ Cajun Band. Seth is the recipient of the Mildred Bevell piano

scholarship. Seth has not yet decided on a university, and he is expecting additional

scholarship offers.

I am extremely excited for all of these students and will miss them all very much. I

know they will do well, and I hope they come visit the band in future years.

It is the busy time of year, and here is what we have on our schedule for the rest of

the year:

Band Rehearsal Schedule (Practices are for non-beginning students):

During April every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday when school is in session, we

have practice after school.

For May we will practice Monday 5/5 and Tuesday 5/6

Performances:

May 7 6:30PM (Wednesday) - Spring Concert at PFTSTA (beginning students will

perform)

May 10 8:30AM (Saturday) Graduation at the Alario Center

All performances are in concert dress black and white: dress black pants or skirt and

dress white shirt or blouse. Black shoes and black socks (no socks with a skirt).

Please no jeans or tennis shoes.

If you would like a copy of the band calendar, band calendars have been handed out

to students and are available for pick up at the band room. For an electronic copy,

please email me [email protected]. Everyone have a wonderful

spring and I’ll see you at the concert.

Sincerely,

John J. McCloskey

Counselor’s Corner Jasmine Hernandez

Monday is a big day for our Taylor Tigers in middle school! iLEAP and LEAP testing

begins on Monday, April 7 and concludes on Thursday, April 10. The following tips

can be used by parents and family members to help their children stay calm,

confident, and focused:

• Make sure your child has a good night’s sleep and eats a well-balanced breakfast

in the morning.

• Remind your child that LEAP testing is important and encourage him/her to do

his/her best! Let your child know that you have confidence in his/her ability!

• Try to avoid potential conflicts and make the morning of test a pleasant one.

• Make sure your child has taken any needed medication.

• Ensure that your child is present during testing. Children generally perform better

when taking tests in their normal class setting than they do at make-up time.
