OFFERTORY Lord of the Small Dan Forrest

Praise to the Lord of the small, broken things, who sees the poor sparrow that cannot take

wing, who loves the lame child, and the wretch in the street, who comforts their sorrows and

washes their feet. Praise to the Lord of the faint and afraid, who girds them with courage

and lends them His aid; He pours out His Spirit on vessels so weak that the timid can

serve and the silent can speak. Praise to the Lord of the frail and the ill, who heals their

afflictions, or carries them till they leave this tired frame and to paradise fly, to never be

sick, and never to die. Praise Him, o praise Him, all ye who yet live, who’ve been given so

much and can so little give, our frail, lisping praise God will never despise: He sees His

dear children through mercy-filled eyes. SCRIPTURE READING Matthew 16:13-20 Dr. Gorman Houston (Pew Bible, NT, p. 18)

WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS Rev. Randy Allen

PRELUDE “Overture” from Phantom of the Opera Andrew Lloyd Webber

CHIMING OF THE HOUR The sounding of the three chimes symbolizes the presence of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

*HYMN OF PRAISE NO. 577 God of Grace and God of Glory CWM RHONDDA

Stanzas 1, 2, 4 God of grace and God of glory, on thy people pour thy power; crown thine ancient church's story; bring her bud to glorious flower. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the facing of this hour, for the facing of this hour. Lo! the hosts of evil round us scorn thy Christ, assail his ways! Fears and doubts too long have bound us; free our hearts to work and praise. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, for the living of these days, for the living of these days. Save us from weak resignation to the evils we deplore; let the search for thy salvation be our glory evermore. Grant us wisdom, grant us courage, serving thee whom we adore, serving thee whom we adore.

*PASSING OF THE PEACE Rev. Randy Allen

OFFERTORY PRAYER Rev. Randy Allen

OFFERING OUR GIFTS TO GOD Please give the attendance slips to the usher as the offering is received.

O pera singer Christine triumphs at a gala on the occasion of the old man-ager’s retirement. Her old childhood friend, Raoul, hears her sing and re-

calls his love for her. At this time, there are rumors of a phantom living at the Paris Opera who makes himself known to its managers through letters and malevolent acts. After the gala, and against the Phantom’s wishes, the Paris Opera performs “Faust,” with the prima

donna Carlotta playing the lead. During the performance, Carlotta loses her voice, and the chandelier plummets into the audience. Christine is kidnapped by the Phantom, and is taken to his home in the cellars of the Opera, where he reveals his true identity to her simply as Erik. Erik plans to keep her there for a few days, hoping she will come to love him. She causes Erik to change his plans when she unmasks him. To the horror of both, she beholds his noseless, lipless and sunken-eyed face. Fearing that she will leave him, he decides to keep her with him forever. He agrees to release her, on the condition that she will wear his ring and be faithful to him. Later, Christine tells Raoul about her abduction, and Raoul promises to hide her where Erik can never find her. She, however, has pity for Erik and will not go until she has sung a song for him one last time. Neither is aware that Erik is listening to their conversation, and has become ex-tremely jealous. During a performance of “Faust,” Erik kidnaps Christine, and tries to force her to marry him. He threatens to use explosives to destroy the entire opera house if she refuses. Christine refuses, but then realizes that Erik has trapped Raoul in a torture chamber. To save Raoul and the people above, Christine agrees to marry Erik and become his “living bride.” Erik eventually rescues Raoul from his torture chamber. When Erik is alone with Christine, he lifts his mask to kiss her on the forehead, and is given a kiss in return. Erik reveals that he has never been kissed, not even by his own mother. He is overcome with emotion. Erik allows Raoul and Christine to escape, though not before making Christine promise that she will visit him once on his death day, and re-turn the gold ring he gave her. He also makes her promise that she will go to the newspaper and report his death. Indeed, some time later Christine returns to Erik’s lair, buries him, and returns the gold ring. Afterward, a local newspaper runs the simple note: “Erik is dead.”
