When we make a commitment to Jesus the Messiah,Wearing a cross shows the world who we are,

but it also reminds us of who the world needs us to be.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

PRELUDE “Méditation” from Thaïs Jules Massenet

*GREETING

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.And also with you.

Our help is in the name of the Lord,Who made heaven and earth.

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN Now Thank We All Our God No. 102

*OPENING PRAYER

O God, you made of one blood all nations that dwell on the face of the whole earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to them that are afar off and to them that are near. Grant that all people everywhere may seek after you and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Proclamation of the Word

*GOSPEL Matthew 16:21-28 NRSV

From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.” But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life? “For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Please join us on Wednesday evening, September 6, for the kickoff of HBUMC’s Wednesday night dinners to hear Raleigh native Scott Ma-son of WRAL-TV, better known as the “Tar Heel Traveler.” As the Tar Heel Traveler, Scott takes us to fascinating places across North Caro-lina and into the lives of memorable characters. His stories are warm, poignant, witty, interesting and inspiring - suitable for all age groups.

Scott has won more than 100 journalism awards, including Na-tional Edward R. Murrow Awards, regional Emmys, and two North Carolina TV Reporter of the Year Awards.

He has authored three books: “The Tar Heel Traveler: Journeys Across North Carolina,” “Tar Heel Traveler Eats: Food Journeys Across North Carolina,” and the soon to be released “Faith and Air: The Mira-cle List.”

U2Charist: Music, Communion, Compassion 7 PM • Friday • September 8, 2017

Hayes Barton UMC presents a U2Charist service on Friday, September 8, at 7 pm in the HB’s Casper Holroyd Hall. The U2Charist service orig-inated in Baltimore in 2003 and has since spread throughout the world and into different denominations. The Hayes Barton LightHouse band will perform songs from U2’s canon throughout the ser-vice which features Holy Communion. The songs of U2 speak of spiri-tual yearning and worship of a sovereign God, and resonate just as meaningfully today as they did 30 years ago when the iconic The Joshua Tree album was released.

Songs include: Vertigo, 40, Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Pride (In the Name of Love), With or Without You, Where the Streets Have No Name, One, All I Want Is You, Angel of Harlem, Magnificent, and Beautiful Day.

This service will focus on the ripple effect of our actions as Christians and activists. Participants will be challenged to seek global reconcilia-tion and fight for justice for the poor and oppressed. In that spirit, a love offering collected that evening will benefit Raleigh’s Carroll’s Kitchen, a non-profit restaurant dedicated to ending homelessness for women: www.carrollskitchen.org

For more U2Charist information, contact Stephen Howell, Director of Contemporary Worship, 919-832-6435 x1141 or [email protected].
