Search starts for1st Pinoy to outer spaceBy Tarra Quismundo

IT WAS an o ut o f this wo rldprospect until now.A Filipino will travel to space

as the Philippines first astronautnext year, joining an internation-al group of 22 space tourists in atrip that had long been impossi-ble for a country with no spaceprogram.

Mens personal care brandAxe launched its search for thefirst Filipino space traveler yes-terday as the global groomingline, known for its quirky adver-tisements and novel productlaunches, kicked off its most am-bitious campaign yet with thespace flight.

We like to say that the sky isthe limit in Axe but this time,

we r e go in g be yo nd th e sk y,said Axe brand manager GemLaforteza.

There are two tips we giveguys on how to impress a girl:one is you have to smell reallygood all the time and two, you

have to be an astronaut. Thereare so few people who have everbeen to space and astronauts arereally the supreme heroes, andits really a rare kind of opportu-nity to do this campaign where

we get to send the first Filipino tospace, Laforteza told reporters.

The campaign launches Axesnew fragrance, Apollo, which

w as i ns p ir e d by th e U ni te dStates Apollo space program.

    Buzz Aldrin, the astronaut

who land ed on the moon withNeil Armstrong through Apollo11 in 1969, will lead the globalrecruitment for a delegate fromeach of 22 participating coun-tries.

The search is open to bothmen and women above 18 yearsold with the physical and mentalprowess to endure zero-gravityconditions in space.

    There are many qualifica-tions for astronauts and we tryto mirror that with our own kindof criteria. There is physicalprowess, mental toughness ands c i e n t i f i c a p t i t u d e , s a i dLaforteza.

As important is a personalityworthy of repre senti ng the Fil-

ipino in space in the once-in-a-

lifetime chance to bring thePhilippine flag beyond Earth.

Good at diplomacyThey have to be very good at

diplomacy because you neverknow who theyll meet in space.

And tha ts als o the cri ter ia ofspace pro grams aro und theglobe, Laforteza said.

All of this is being set upsuch that by the end of one year,

we l l ha ve th e be st pe rs on torepresent the Philippines and to

join that internationa l group ofpeople who will represent thebest in humanity, he added.

    For the entirely private sectorprogram, Axe tapped Americanaerospace firm XCOR Aerospaceand its sales agent, Space Expe-d i t i o n C o r p . , f o r t h e s p a c eflight.

Winning space travelers willfly, one at a time, aboard Lynxspace planes once Space Expedi-

tion Curaao begins operationalflights. The reusable space planesare designed to fly two peo-pleone pilot and a passen-gerto an altitude of 100 kilome-ters during suborbital flights, ac-cording to Space.com. The rocketplane is built to take off and landhorizontally on a runway.

    Caribbean islandSpace.com said Space Expe-

dition Curaao would overseecommercial Lynx flights from

    the Caribbean island of Curaao.

Tickets for a flight are set at$95,000 or nearly P4 million.

XCOR Aerospace is expectedto begin the first test flights of ahigh-altitude Lynx design some-time later this year. The firstpassenger flights could begin in2014.

The passenger will then stayin space for a still undisclosedamount of time for a suborbitalflight, or a trip where the ship

will not go into orbit around theEarth and instead travel up tospace and then back down.

Online votingThose who dare take on the

challenge may register their ap-plications on www.AxeApol-lo.com. Online voting will deter-mine a short list of 10,000 by

August, said Laforteza. They will then go through lo-

cal competitions to determinethe top two candidates who de-

serve to go to the Florida spacecamp. By December, AASA willannounce the final 22 spacetravelers, with the Philippinesassured of one slot.

    Love

    NotesJoe D Mango

    www.lovenotes.com.ph

Never fell deeply in love with any of his former girlfriendsDEAR Joe,Im Gian, 24 years old and currently working in one ofthe five star hotels in Manila. I decided to write to you be-cause Im confused. Nobody knows what Im goingthrough. You see, I had a number of girlfriends before andall of them have brought me happiness and good memo-ries. But I never fell deeply in love with any of them.

I never felt the real intensityof love until I met Lewis. YesJoe, you read it right! Lewis is aguy. I dont know where to be-gin but everything started whenhe became a co-worker. Whenhe was first introduced to me, Iimmediately noticed his goodlooks, his smile was just perfectbut those physical attributesdidnt impress me. I never likedhim at first.

Clich as it may sound I be-lieve that destiny drew us closertogether. We shared same inter-ests: smoking, drinking andnights-out. We usually go out asa group but we set a day where

we could bond together. Wewould go strolling, feast andeven watch movies together

which is very odd for two guysto do. More than his appear-ance, Im more impressed withhis kindness.

One time, we had a misun-

    derstanding. I texted him and

blamed him for our shallowfight. His reply surprised me,Joe. He said, Im sorry for ev-erything! I love you! I repliedby saying I love you, too. Wenever discussed the issue but he

would usually ask me to sleepover at his place. We share thesame bed but nothing sexualhappens between us. Therehave been moments where I

would just stare at his beautifulface while he slept. Thats whenI realized I was falling in love

with Lewis. At first I thoughtmy love for him was more of abrotherly love. But I was

wrong! Its beyond platonic andit has gone deeper without real-izing that his end of contract

was nearing. When his contract expired, I

lost focus. The person who gaveme attention and care wouldopen another chapter of his life

without me on his side. It

brings me so much pain and

frustration. He would text andcall me once in a while. I really

want to talk to him and admitmy real feelings but the fear ofrejection and possible humilia-tion prevented me from doingso. Just last month, he invitedus to come to his birthday. I de-cided to come together withseven of our common friends. Isaw he had many friends but I

wasnt surprised at all becausehe is a friendly and likable per-

son. One of his traits that mademe love him.

After an hour, I decided toleave. As I walked towards mycar, he hurriedly went to meand gave me a tight hug. I wasasking him if he was drunk

while slowly pushing him away.He said he wasnt and then heembraced me for the secondtime. While driving on my wayhome, I couldnt help but cry. Ihated myself for allowing this

    to happen.

Im trying to exert an effortto forget my love for him whichis very wrong to begin with. I

want to start my life with aclean slate. Life is really full ofsurprises. I never thought I

would be in this kind of situa-tion. How could I forget him,Joe? Please help me. May Godcontinue to shower you and

    your program with more bless-ings.

    With much respect,Gian

GIAN,Life indeed is ful l of surprises. Wejust don t know what will comeknocking at our doors next. Gi-an, you are not alone in thisquest for identity. I have heard

from many l ike you who are go-ing through the same dilemma. .It is diffi cult to come to a realiz a-tion that there exists within usanother person unexpectedly andtotally different from us. It is likea mysterious flame glowingthrough cold ash.

I have always said that it isnot in loving a person that wecommit sin but it is what we dowhen we love beyond the limitsof reason that makes it wrong.Gian, your moral censors made

you aware of the implication ofsuch rel ationships. The hardshipyou are going through reflectsyour internal conflict but yourability to rationalize means that

you are still capable of changingthe course of your life.

If you really want to forgethim then you have stop thinkingabout him. He may not be in

your face but you have all owedhim to remain at the back of

your mind. An d the mind i s verypowerful. The people who we donot remember are the people whomean little to us and the peoplewe love are those we do not for-

get. I f we stop loving a p ersonthen we can start forgetting. But

for as lo ng as our hearts are con-nected then all efforts to rule

    over our emotion will meannothing.

Gian, we become who wethink and believe we are. Be

yourself and reme mber that wecan only be truly happy when weare at peace with our inner selvesand when we are in harmonywith the people we love and the

    people who l ove us.H e a r d a n d s e e n o n

Compostela Valley Gov. Arturo Uy lauded the organizationsefforts. I give my gratitude to Tzu Chi Foundation for coming to ourprovince to have this medical mission program. We know that theconditions after the typhoon lead people to become susceptible to

illnesses. So it is a big help to my constituents that their medical needsare addressed, he said. The medical mission served 991 residents.

Vilma Santos: Politicsdirtier than show biz

Heres my tte--tte withthe star for all seasons.

What are your immediateplans this 2013?

Im excited to shoot my firstindie movie. We are in the plan-ning stage. Its good that I haveto shoot only for nine days be-

cause I cant be absent in Batan-gas for so longI owe it to myconstituents to serve them 100percent. The story is so interest-ing because, for the first time, I

will be portraying an extra. It

will be quite a learning experi-ence for me to know what itfeels like to be a bit player for achange.

Any apprehens ions for thecoming elections?

By Gods grace, I think itsgoing to be a breeze for me. I

just pray that there will be nomore senseless killings. A per-sons life is worth more thanpolitics.

    Whats dirtier, politics orshow biz?

I guess politics because to-toong buhay ito (its about reallife). In show biz, intriguescome and go. After two weeks,

youre old news and theres anew issue already. As governor,I have to serve the people,

while in show biz, Im the onebeing pampered. When I was

just new in politics, I almostwanted to quit. I missed being

spoiled as an actress because inpolitics, I got no special treat-ment. But I challenged myself,so I learned how to stomach thesystem.

How are your sons?Luis is very happy with Jen-

nylyn (Mercado). I dont givehim unsolicited love advice. Aslong as I see that hes happy, thats more than enough for me.Im ready for the day that hesettles down.

Ryan is turning 17. He hasno girlfriend yet but he hangsout with a lot of his friends whoare girls.

Do you and Ralph clashover political issues?

We hardly talk about politicsat home. We sometimes clashabout our son Ryan. Hes mak-ing Ryan get into so manysports so I tell him that heshould also let our son havetime for himself.

But as a whole, Ralph and Iare rock-solid. We celebratedour 20th wedding anniversarylast Dec. 11. All in all, wevebeen together for 27 years since

we were on for seven years. Icant imagine starting a new life

with someone else. How are things between

you and Edu (Manza no)?Weve always been cool. We

consult each other when itcomes to our son Luis.

    Whats more important to

    you, awards or box-office suc-

    cess?

Both are equally important.Winning an award is a prestige. Its proof that youre a legit ac-tress. But you should also havedrawing power. Lets face it:Movie-making is a business.Producers should get back theirinvestment.

Hot duds for cool dudeKapuso discovery Sef Cadayonas wardrobe teems

with hats and shoes dance floor must-haves

Two years ago, Sef stood outfrom among his StarStruck Vbatch mates, which included big

winners S arah Lahbati andSteven Silva, because of hisdancing skills.

Sef was first noticed by thepublic as main pitchman forCornetto ice cream, though.

    The ad campaignhighlighted Sefs flair

for comedywhich wasalso put to good use inseveral Kapuso shows, in-cluding Ilumina, Time of

My Life and Coffee Prince. He is currently a regu-

lar in the GMA 7 musicalvariety program PartyPilipinas and the gag showBubble Gang.

In Time of My Life, he madewaves portraying flamboyantdancer Harry.

Hes not afraid of being type-cast in gay roles, he said. Ishould be willing to play anycharacter assigned to me.

Sef looks up to Will Ferrelland Steve Carell for comedy.Their kind of humor comes

with a smirk, he explained, perky but not hammy. Amonglocal comics, his choices areTito, Vic and Joey.

He does research by watch-ing his favorite artists oldmovies on his iPhone. I try to

come up with new tricks, ges-

tures and mannerisms for eachnew character, said Sef, a Me-dia Arts student at San Beda

College Alabang. In his latest indie movie,

Ronaldo M. Bertubins Gayak,an entry in the New Wave sec-tion of the 2012 Metro ManilaFilm Festival, Sef once againplayed a closeted teener. Butthis time, he went not forlaughs but for tears and empa-thy.

After reading the script, Ibecame more determined to

join the cast, he related. I

learned a lot from the director

and from my costar Alan Paule, who played my dad. Hesproud of Paule for winning bestactor in the New Wave sectionfor that role.

Sir Alan and I would talklengthily about the scene before

each take. He and (costar) Eve-lyn Vargas helped me get intocharacter, Sef said.

He hopes Gayak has proventhat he can do drama as well. Then again, he could alwaysput on his dancing shoes andtrip the light fantastic.

    Shoe collectionI started

    collectingshoes be-

    cause of the

    dance numberson Party Pilipinas,

    the self-confessed shoea-holic quipped.

He has amassed quite astash of sneakers, mostly Adi-das and Nike hip-hop gear.

A favorite pair is the NikeAir Yeezy, designed by Ameri-can rapper Kanye West. Only1,000 pairs were manufac-tured and I was lucky to getthese, he said. Another fave

pair are the suede shoes byZara. The most expensive are

the Super Death Stars by Adi-das. Im a Star Wars fan,he explained.

Fans based in the UnitedKingdom and the UnitedStates, have gifted him withNikes.

He has some glow-in-the-dark pairs, too.

    Serious cleanersHes pretty serious about

    shoe care and has invested inan array of cleaners. Theseshoe-care products are noteasy to find;

you just have to know whereto look.

He swears by New BalanceSuede Cleaner, ChampsSneaker Protection, New Bal-ance Shoe Cleaner and TheCleaner. Its important toclean your shoes properly forthem to last, he said.

Sef once owned a pair that

he wore for years. They finallygave up during dance re-hearsals.

    Trademark headgearHeadgear has become Sefs

trademark on and off the set.His fedora is from Traffic; a

black hat is from SM Depart-ment Store. He owns a coupleof colorful, intricately embel-

lished caps by Ed Hardyalongwith simpler ones by Mutantand Billabong. I prefer capsthat dont have snap bands.

He pointed out that the wo-ven fedora became his signaturehat as Harry in Time of MyLife.

He got himself a hat hamperto store his eclectic collectibles.
