Bravo, Behn!gourmand. He loved his foodand was quite picky. If its a rave, hed exclaim, after savoring hisfirst spoonful: I believe in God!

Angeli Bayani credited Cer-vantes for discovering her as anactress. He once challenged us:How can you stand up for yourcountry when you cant evenstand up to your parents.

Bayani, who was a collegefreshman in UP Diliman then,

thought it was too much to askof kids like her. It took yearsbefore I understood what hemeant. As an iskolar ng bayan,

we all had a responsibility toserve the people who sent us toschool.

Briccio Santos, chair of theFilm Development Council ofthe Philippines, pointed out:He is admired for being articu-late and progressive for hisbrilliant mind. He utilized hisart and creativity to serve soci-ety.

Said INQUIRERS Rito Asilo ofCervantes, who contributed arti-cles to the papers Saturday Spe-cial section: The first few timesthat I met Behn, his scathinghonesty made me uncomfort-able. But as I got to know himbetter, I learned to enjoy hisquick wit, candor and no-holds-barred opinions. He was gener-ous with praise, too. He waspassionately loyal to his close

circle of friends, which includes(my editor) Nestor U. Torre.

Said character actress VangieLabalan, who acted with Cer-

vantes in the play Private Parts, directed by Elwood Perez in2005: He was renowned forhis temper, but during re-hearsals, he was patient andcool even if I missed my cue.

Perez looked back: In the1960s, when Behn was already aleading stage luminary and I was

still a wannabe playwright, heshared his lodging with me andtwo other friends when we at-tended a summer theater work-shop in Baguio. I will foreverowe him a debt of gratitude forthat enlightening experience.

His sister Lengleng Cervantestold the INQUIRER: We wereplanning a celebration for his75th birth anniversary on Aug.26, but God brought him to ahappier place. I lost a brother, but (heaven) gained a soul.

    By Bayani San Diego Jr.

COLLEAGUES paidtheir final re-spects to director-

actor-activist Behn Cer-vantes, who passed awayafter a valiant battle withdiabetes on Thursdaymorning.

    They fondly remember Cer-

vantes as a classmate, col-league, costar and comrade.

Actress Boots Anson-Roa re-called: Behn was my classmatein Argumentation and Debateand cothespian in the UP Dra-matic Club at the University ofthe Philippines in Diliman in the1960s. He was passion and com-mitment personified. He wasuncompromising in his dedica-tion to his craft, art and princi-ples as an activist and educator.

Roa said she would miss herfriends wit the most: He madeus laugh with his trademarkacerbic and pungent humor.Bravo, Behn!

Actress Hilda Koronel, whowas in the cast of Cervantes on-ly movie Sakada, agreed: Behn

was always funny even thoughhe looked serious. He was veryhelpful and kind. Of course, hecould also be mataray(feisty) ifneeded.

Koronel, who is now basedin the United States, recountedthat the shoot of Sakada in1976 was nerve-wracking. Weall got scared. It was the heightof martial law and the govern-ment called our attention be-cause our movie tackled a con-troversial issue.

Sakada exposed the exploita-tion of farm workers in the sug-ar industry.

Art of script throwingSaid Ces Quesada, his student

and later fellow faculty memberin the speech and drama depart-ment of UP Diliman: I wasknown as Behns baby. I oncecaught him in the middle of re-hearsals. He was in a foul moodbecause an actor kept makingthe same mistake. Parts of themangled script were already onthe floor. Behn made the art ofscript throwing an Olympic sport.I sat beside him to share myme-rienda ofcornik and whispered

to him: Behn, its not worth it.

He looked at me and, with animpish smile, said: You are right. Its not worth it. He then threwthe bag of cornik at the actor.

Scriptwriter-actress BibethOrteza has a favorite anecdoteon Cervantes the teacher: Oneday, Behn gave an essay-examon Samuel Becketts Waiting forGodot. One of his students,Willy Inong (who would laterreinvent himself as disc jockeyHillbilly Willy), hadnt read theplay. So he began his piece, thus: So there I am, while Wait-ing for Godeaux. Willy assumedthe name was French.

What transpired next was clas-sic Cervantes: By chance, Willysbluebook was the first that Behnpicked up. Behn got so furiousthat he ripped and threw all thebluebooks in the trash. But whilehe was tearing the test papers tobits, he remembered the spellingof Godeaux. Behn later told me:Heaven help me, I found myself

laughing at the effrontery.Chanda Romero, costar in

Eddie Romeros Aguila, related:The feared and fearless Behn

was crumbling because of hisTagalog lines. He took tranquil-izer but it didnt work. On theseventh take, I gently but firmlysqueezed his leg, as if to tellhim to relax. Then he was OK.

    In spite of i ts thoroughlyAmerican theme, Pawn Stars haseasily crossed over to the Asianr e g i o n . ( T h e s h o w i s e v e ndubbed in Filipino and aired onGMA News TV.)

To touch base with Asian fans,Rick and his son/costar CoreyBig Hoss Harrison, are touringthe region this month. A meet-and-greet with Filipino fans is set

Aug. 24 at the Glorietta ActivityCenter, Palm Drive, in Makati.

In an exclusive e-mail inter-view, Rick gabs candid ly aboutthe art of the deal, the curiouschemistry among the cast mem-bers, and working with his OldMan and Big Hoss.

Do you still work behindthe counter?

We cant exactly work behindthe counter like we used to. A lotof what we do happens behindthe scenes. For example, whenthere is an item that a customeris trying to sell and my employeedoesnt know if its genuine orhow much its worth my staff

will then brin g it to me in thebackroom to discuss the price.

What one principle do youstick to?

Youve got to be able to walkaway from a deal. You cant fall inlove with something. At the endof the day, its just stuff. Andnever give the first price when ne-gotiating. Get their number first.

How would you describeyourself as a businessma n?

Ive learned through many tri-als and errors. My father taught

me a lot and just being in the shopdaily has taught me a lot, too.How often does Old Man go

to work?Old Man has been reporting

for work five days a week beforeand after the show became a hit.He will never retire. There aretimes he comes in on his day off.Hes just so used to working in-sane hours.

How would you describe OldMan away from the cameras?

He is what he is, camera orno camera.

What was Big Hoss like as achild?

He was a punk. I kicked himout many times and he got introuble many times on top ofthat. He eventually landed in jailand cleaned up his act.

    Whats your relationshiplike now?

He is my best friend. We arevery close.

What is the coolest item ev-

er pawned or sold in the shop?Ive accumulated countless

unique items. Some of the rarestIve purchased and are mostproud of are a 1 6 th-centuryprint by German engraver Al-brecht Drer, a Les Paul guitar, and a Native American pho-togravure worth US$20,000.

    Which one regretfully gotaway?

There are many for which Itried to strike a deal, but the

customer wouldnt budge. What was the idea behindyour book, License to Pawn?

I wanted to tell my life story[in a way that] doesnt come outon the show. I thought it wouldbe a chance for fans to learnmore about me.

    W h a t d o y o u l o v e / h a t eabout Las Vegas?

I hate the politics that surroundrunning a business in Vegas. Otherthan that, Vegas is my home and Ilove everything it has to offer!
