Don Bosco studentsbuild ‘Servant One’e-jeepney from junk

By Aries Joseph Hegina

T HIS is hard to believe. Buildingan electric vehicle from junk? That was exactly what five col-

lege students from Don Bosco Techni-cal College in Mandaluyong City didin making an electric jeepney, whichthey hope to see plying the country’sroads soon.

Taking inspirationfrom the name of USpresidential plane “AirForce One,” graduat-ing Mechanical Engi-neering studentsRodette Astoriano,Michael Tan, JosephSantos, Kenneth Ma-gracia and Christo-pher Llorente fromDon Bosco TechnicalCollege in Mandaluy-ong City named theirelectric jeepney as“Servant One.”

The group claimsthat Servant One isthe first e-jeepney inthe country assem-bled by students withthe guidance of theiradvisers.

During the launch-ing of the e-jeep be-fore sponsors, schooladministrators and

faculty members onTuesday, team leaderAstoriano narratedhow his group cameup with the electricvehicle.

He said that theidea to assemble theServant One camewhen they enteredthe Shell Eco-Mara-thon, an annual com-petition which fea-tured smarter mobili-ty and energy effi-ciency in vehicles.

Astoriano said thatthe body of the electricvehicle was made ofdiscarded multicab thatthey bought from ajunk shop for P15,000and retrofitted withparts they importedfrom abroad.

The money for thecomponents of the e-

jeep was pooled fromthe donations of theschool alumni, privatebenefactors and cityofficials.

The 8-seater e-jeepis powered by lithiumion battery.

The school’s rector,Fr. Chito Dimaranan,SDB, hailed the stu-dents’ feat, hopingthat Servant One willbe ready for nation-wide distribution.

“Despite so manylimitations we have(gone through), youpulled this through. And you came outwith something thatis really worth shar-ing for the rest of thecountry,” Dimaranansaid.

The school rectortook the Servant Onefor a ride as he drovearound the schoolquadrangle.

On the other hand, engineer Paul Catalan, among the group’s ad-visers, praised the stu-dents for making tech-nology “with a soul.”

“We have faced oildependence, air pol-lution. For many

years, our institution’sbattle cry has ‘tech-nology with a soul’…We believe that elec-trifying our transportsystem will be poten-tially good. Today, wehave shown that anelectric vehicle can bebuilt by students and

that it is more effi-cient and cleanerthan conventional ve-hicles,” he said.

Astoriano sharedhis group’s plans forthe future of the elec-tric jeepney, which isseen as the future ofland transportation in

the country.He said that he

wants the ServantOne to utilize solarenergy and to becomesustainable.

“We are hopingthat the future stu-dents who will handlethe e-jeepney to con-

duct future studies sothat the Servant Onecan become self-sus-taining, such asputting solar panelson the vehicle’s roof.We also want them toplan the charging sta-tions for the e-jeep-ney,” he said.

One of his dreamsis for the Servant Oneto be funded by corpo-rations so that it couldbe mass assembledand that it could beutilized by Mandaluy-ong City residents inthe near future.

Non-governmentalorganization Instituteof Climate and Sus-tainable Cities (ICSC)introduced the first e-Jeepney in the Philip-pines in 2007. For itsfirst run, 20 e-jeep-neys assembled in thecountry plied routesinside Salcedo andLegaspi villages.

John Lloyd in his elementBy Dolly Anne Carvajal

It has been nine years sincethe analgesic brand launchedits Ingat campaign. Lloydie issuch an effective endorser thatthe brand has become synony-mous with him and vice versa.

My media colleagues and Icornered Lloydie at the “IsangPasa50lamat” press conferencehosted by Unilab at EdsaShangri-La.

JLC was in his element, ashe dished out unshow-biz an-swers.

Here are some of Lloydie’smusings:

“I almost feel unworthy tobe an endorser for almost adecade. I remember my hu-miliating experience when weshot the first TV commercial.

It took me 52 takes before Icould get it right. I said to my-self, I’m an actor so thisshould be easy. Being a brandambassador, however, is nolonger work for me.

“I had reservations doingthe latest commercial, whichincludes my personal team. They are the people I workwith every day. It felt like I’mexposing my private life byputting [them] out there.

“It has gone beyond seek-ing a medicine. I have ownedit. I need to take it when Ihave headaches from [dealingwith] paperwork and con-tracts. I go through every sin-gle thing myself.Indie scene

“I want to venture into pro-ducing more than directing. Iam into the indie scene now.The idea of collaborating withdifferent actors, directors andproducers excites me.

“It’s tough to get old inshow biz. When I wasyounger, I would just acceptevery project that was offeredto me. Even if I’ve reached mypeak, I don’t want to be com-placent. I am now choosy withmy projects. I base [my deci-sions] on the material.

“My world has grown big-ger. I am not just confined tomy home network, ABS-CBN.I want to break away from myusual roles. I refuse be type-cast.

“It’s hard to fight for yourcraft. Erik Matti’s ‘Ponzi(Honor Thy Father)’ will serveas an eye-opener since it’s anunusual project. I want peopleto have a different perceptionof the John Lloyd they’ve got-ten used to.

“I experienced many trialsin the last three years. I hadto learn how not to hate showbusiness. I began questioning

the industry and the processof the people in it. When ithurts, it hurts.

“Local show biz is network-dependent and ratings-driven.But I believe the audiencenow wants something moreand something different.

“My realization is that Ihave to protect my art and mycore to achieve what I want, artistically.”

Comfort foodI had a blast at the opening

of my new favorite resto, NaciCafé Lounge (Fox SquareBuilding Connecticut Street,Northeast Greenhills).

The cozy place takes inter-national comfort food to anew level. Its sumptuous dish-es were created by the café’smaster chef Ed Quimson.

I can’t have enough of theirkani mango crunch salad andlengua in creamy sauce, toname a few of the resto’s tastychow.

Its sister company NC Ra-men has opened right besideit and offers a whole range ofJapanese dishes with ramenand gyoza as their specialties. To cater to night owls and ear-ly birds, both restos have the“Early Chow,” which is perfectfor a last-stop meal beforeheading home after a nightout, or as breakfast before go-ing to work.

At the fete, it was nice toreconnect with my goodfriends from way back, theowners of the resto-bar, Love-ly Rivero (of That’s Entertain-ment fame) and Nacy Nocom, who used to be a movie pro-ducer. He produced many ofthe late Lino Brocka’s films.

Thanks to both of them formaking me feel so welcome.(Naci is open from 7 a.m. to 3a.m., Monday to Thursday; 7a.m. to 5 a.m., Friday and Sat-urday; 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sun-day.)

‘Batang-Bata pa Kami’Ateneo Grade School Class

of 1965 celebrates its goldenanniversary on May 31, with“Batang-Bata pa Kami at 50.”

For inquiries, call ButchRaquel, 0917-8037868.

I will never forget John Lloyd Cruz’skind gesture of making my dalagay, ICMendoza, sleep on his couch at his

home when IC was too sleepy to drive af-ter hanging out with him, Angelica Pan-ganiban and Alex Gonzaga. I also cherishthe time Lloydie made my daughter,

Bianchi (who’s a big “JLC” fan) so ecstatic when hegamely talked to her on the phone.

It only goes to show that his famous line, “Ingat!” in hisbiggest commercial endorsement, Biogesic, is no lip service. Gerphil holds

“I want to tell everybodythat my experience on Pilip-inas Got Talent was complete-ly memorable,” Gerphil toldINQUIRER.net in an interviewduring the finalists’ homecom-ing press conference on Thurs-day at Urban Bar and Kitchen,Bonifacio Global City inTaguig.

In 2010, Gerphil joinedABS-CBN’s Pilipinas Got Tal-ent, the local franchise of thepopular talent show, as theclassical singer Fame butfailed to land a spot in the fi-nals.

Actresses Kris Aquino andAi-Ai de las Alas were two ofthe three judges of the show.

When Gerphil got the“golden buzzer” during heraudition in AXN’s Asia’s GotTalent to secure a spot in thesemifinals, social media wasabuzz with negative criticismsdirected at Kris and Ai-ai.

Netizens bashed both Krisand Ai-Ai for supposedly fail-ing to see Gerphil’s talent andurging her to go another di-rection.

As Federer finished an in-terview after his first-roundFrench Open victory Sunday,an overzealous fan left hisseat and approached the 17-time major champion rightthere on the main stadiumcourt in search of the mostmodern of mementos — acellphone selfie.

At first, Federer seemedstartled. Then he looked un-comfortable, trying to brushaway the unexpected guest, who appeared to be in histeens, before a guard led thespectator away. And in theend, Federer was angry at

what he considered a seriouslapse in security.

“I’m not happy about it.Obviously, not (for) one sec-ond (am I) happy about it,”Federer said, adding thatsomething similar happened aday earlier, when several kidsinterrupted his practice ses-sion at Roland Garros.
