With a heritage that stretches back over six decades, the Transporter is firmly

established as the backbone of Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle range. The brand’s best-selling model in the UK and worldwide, the modern-era T5 has achieved sales of more than one million since its launch in 2003. With the T5’s predecessors factored in, the Transporter has clocked up a production total of more than 10 million since 1949.

Bold, confident designThe current T5 arrived in UK Volkswagen Van Centres in January 2010. In addition to featuring Volkswagen’s

bold design language, the Transporter benefits from such enhancements as a daytime running function for the headlights, the latest-generation ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and optional Lane Change Assist.

Broad engine rangePower is provided by Volkswagen’s acclaimed four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, common-rail TDI engine. Economical and refined, it complies with EURO5 emissions standards, and comes with five power output options: 84PS, 102PS, 114PS, 140PS and twin-turbo 180PS. Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG (Direct

Shift Gearbox) and/or 4MOTION four-wheel drive are offered with 140 and 180PS models, giving the Transporter one of the most advanced drivetrain ranges in the sector.

BlueMotion technologyVolkswagen’s commitment to reducing running costs for owners and operators extends to the whole Transporter range. In addition to offering some of the cleanest and most efficient engines in the sector, the Transporter range includes an ultra-frugal BlueMotion model (SWB only) fitted with a host of fuel-saving technologies and features.

Customers can also choose BlueMotion Technology models that come equipped with a number of Volkswagen’s acclaimed BlueMotion features.

Loadspace optionsThe Transporter is available as a panel van with a short or long wheelbase and a low, medium or high roof. TransporterDesign

Combining bold shapes with intricate details, the Transporter seamlessly blends form with function.

The striking front end styling is in line with that of the latest Volkswagen passenger cars, and is instantly recognisable with bold, angular headlamps, grille emblem and crisp, horizontal lines. The headlights feature daytime running lights, below which the bumper includes the option of fog lights with integrated cornering-light function to illuminate the direction in which the vehicle is turning.

Aerodynamic door mirrors contribute to improving fuel economy and reducing noise levels inside the Transporter. At the rear, to identify the two higher-powered engines, the last letter of the TDI badge is red for the 140PS model while for the range-topping 180PS BiTDI, the last two letters of the badge are red. Optional reversing sensors can help to prevent

body damage when manoeuvring the Transporter, and a reversing camera is also available.

The exterior design can be enhanced with the optional Appearance Pack, which includes body-coloured bumpers and mirrors, plus electric windows and electrically adjustable and heated mirrors.

Panel vanSuch is the strength and rigidity of the Transporter’s box body that it can be fitted with two sliding doors. A left-hand door is standard, with a right-hand door available as an option. Electrically operated sliding doors are also an option, while a tailgate can be specified in lieu of the standard twin rear doors.

KombiDue to the high demand for the ‘kombi pack’ on the previous Transporter window van, a standalone kombi model was

introduced. It offers the versatility of a panel van with seats for five people as standard, or up to six people with the optional dual passenger seat. Rear occupants have a sliding window in the side door and panel on the opposite side, but the side panel behind them remains solid.

Window van and ShuttleThe Transporter window van is designed primarily as a crew cab vehicle or the base vehicle for many conversions, such as campervans or minibuses.

Many of the seats are either easily removable (without needing any tools) or can fold and tip to provide greater loadspace.

The Transporter Shuttle offers more luxury than the window van and features sliding doors on both sides of the vehicle, plus electrically adjustable mirrors and electric windows. SE versions benefit from body-coloured bumpers and chrome trim on the grille.

The Transporter’s cab is designed not only to provide a pleasant and comfortable driving experience

but also to function as an efficient and practical workplace. The backrest is ergonomically designed, as are the seat cushion and side supports in the front.

Finding the perfect driving position is aided by a height and reach adjustable steering wheel. Because the gearshift is mounted on the dashboard, the floorspace is unobstructed. The seats offer excellent comfort even on long journeys: the driver’s seat has adjustment for height, reach and rake, plus lumbar support as standard. A dual passenger seat with storage box and folding backrest (fixed backrest with optional bulkheads) is standard on the panel van, while a single passenger seat is standard on the kombi and window van – with a dual passenger seat available as an option.

Optimised space: interior designFlexible layoutsThe kombi has a three-seater rear bench, with the option of a one-third/two-thirds split and folding rear seat. Seating choices on all models include a fold-down tray in the backrest of the dual passenger seat; heated squabs; comfort seats with armrests for the driver and passenger; and swivelling seats, plus robust or leatherette upholstery.

Premium interior qualityFeatures and luxuries more often seen in a passenger car include a multifunction display including gearshift indicator; three-spoke steering wheel with optional leather cover and with multifunction controls; radio/CD units with the option of AUX-in functionality; and touchscreen satellite-navigation systems.

Volkswagen understands the need for cabin storage, and developed the Transporter to be as useful and

practical as possible. The storage areas fitted as standard across the range include compartments in the driver and passenger doors, both capable of accommodating a 1.5-litre bottle and an A4 folder. In addition, there are storage pockets at each end of the dashboard beneath the air vents, a storage net on the lower dash on the passenger’s side, an open storage space on top of the dashboard and others near the gearlever, as well as integrated within the overhead roof liner.

Heating and venitlationRecognising the importance of the Transporter’s role as a workplace, Volkswagen designers paid considerable attention to climate control systems. A heat exchanger sits beneath the instrument panel: the system features fresh/recirculated air circuits and a dust and pollen filter.

The Transporter’s seats offer excellent comfort even on long journeys: the driver’s seat has adjustment for height, reach and rake, plus lumbar support as standard.

Clean and efficient: Transporter drivetrains

Engines &gearboxes

At the heart of the Transporter is a range of advanced 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines that combine

strong performance with exceptional economy and low emissions. Developed to meet the broad demands of operators, power outputs range from 84PS to 180PS.

All five engine variants offered in the Transporter have common-rail, high-pressure fuel injection that significantly optimises refinement and minimises engine noise. In addition, the current range of engines deliver strong performance and high torque outputs. More importantly, they also deliver low emissions to comply with the EURO5 and are fitted with a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) as well as an oxidation catalytic converter.

Among the many technical highlights of the Transporter engine range is the twin-turbo 180PS BiTDI unit. Equipped with a large and a small turbo, it has been designed to give drivers the best of both worlds when on the road. At low engine speeds, the larger turbocharger delivers steady charge and at higher speeds, the second one gives an additional boost. This guarantees optimal charging throughout the engine speed range, maximises efficiency and results in a smooth power delivery.

Common-rail technologyCommon-rail engines use a common, high-pressure feed of fuel to the injectors for every cylinder. Constant pressure is available at the injectors. Fuel quantity and injection timing are controlled by valves at the individual injectors.

The fuel injectors with eight-hole jets spray the fuel in a fine mist; due to piezo switching elements, they work twice as rapidly as the previous generation’s magnetically controlled units. In addition, the common-rail principle controls the injection procedure in five stages (in each case two pre-injections, a main injection, and two post-injections) so that the combustion process takes place smoothly, thus maximum advantage is taken of the energy content of the fuel. This results in high refinement and power with low exhaust emissions.

BlueMotion technology The Transporter line-up features a range of Volkswagen’s acclaimed BlueMotion technologies, along with a special Transporter BlueMotion model that is the most efficient vehicle in its class. Available in short-wheelbase form only, it returns 48.7mpg on the combined cycle and has CO2 emissions of just 153g/km. More information relating to BlueMotion can be found on p14.

GearboxesA five-speed manual gearbox is standard with the 84PS and 102PS engines. The 140PS and 180PS BiTDI engines have a standard six-speed manual, while Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) is offered on certain models along with 4MOTION all-wheel drive (see p17 for info). The economical and convenient DSG performs gearshifts within a few hundredths of a second without any interruption in traction. No automatic gearbox operates so efficiently, quickly or precisely.

DSG’s seventh gear is designed as an overdrive, with top speed reached in sixth gear. The top gear has a particularly long ratio and reduces engine speed, thus optimising fuel consumption, emissions and noise.

The DSG transmission operates with two automatic clutches. While the larger one is engaged, the second is poised ready to accept the drive of the next gear. This unique twin-clutch design means gear changes are completed in under

four hundredths of a second – in the blink of an eye .The vehicle is driven like a conventional automatic or the driver can elect to change gear manually via the gearlever pushing it forwards to change up, or backwards to change down.

TransporterBlueMotion

BlueMotion TechnologyBlueMotion Technology is available across the Transporter panel van, Kombi, Window van and Shuttle ranges, and consists of four clever elements (see graphic right). Together, they significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, which in turn leads to lower running costs and smaller carbon footprint. Volkswagen’s BlueMotion Technology enables users to be environmentally friendly without compromising on power or performance. Using simple innovations, BlueMotion Technology-equipped models strike a perfect balance between driving enjoyment and environmental friendliness but remain suitable for everyday use.

Energy recuperationWhen braking, energy during deceleration is wasted. Volkswagen’s energy recuperation system uses some of that momentum to run the alternator and charge the battery. If the battery is well-charged, the engine has to do less work turning the alternator to keep ittopped up. This cuts fuel use and emissions.

Cruise controlBy keeping the Transporter at a constant speed, cruise control saves fuel that would normally be wasted when road speed fluctuates. Especially useful for driving over long stretches, it stops road speed creeping up unintentionally and reduces the driver’s physical workload.

Low rolling-resistance tyresTyres with low rolling-resistance mean that the engine doesn’t have to work as hard to get the Transporter moving – or keep it moving. It all helps to save fuel and reduce emissions.

Start/stopAllows the driver to save fuel at traffic lights and in stationary traffic. With the vehicle in neutral and the clutch out, the engine automatically switches off, saving fuel and reducing emissions. To restart the engine, all the driver needs to do is depress the clutch. How BlueMotion

The Transporter BlueMotion panel van brings a new level of efficiency to the Transporter range. As well as using

all of the BlueMotion Technologies (see previous page for full details), every aspect of its specification has been optimised.

Available in short-wheelbase panel van form only, the Transporter BlueMotion is fitted with the same efficient 2.0-litre TDI engine as the rest of the range that generates 114PS.

Thanks to the combination of a highly efficient engine and BlueMotion features that include start/stop, energy recuperation, special aerodynamics, weight saving and cruise control, the Transporter BlueMotion is the most fuel-efficient vans in its sector. It boasts fuel economy of up to 48.7mpg on the combined cycle, while CO2 emissions are just 153g/km.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is that the Transporter’s acclaimed load-carrying ability remains uncompromised. It can still carry payloads up to 871kg and can handle loads as long as 2.57m.

Dynamic and dependable: axles and steering

The Transporter sets exceptionally high standards for ride and handling, thanks to an innovative suspension

set-up, advanced safety features and a highly rigid body structure. Even with maximum payload, the Transporter has outstanding dynamic handling qualities and stability in all conditions.

AxlesTo deliver the perfect driving experience, the Transporter has a separate front subframe. Unusually, the track control arms and anti-roll bar are attached to a subframe rather than being directly linked to the body. Vibration-absorbing mountings attach the subframe to the body, leading to extremely effective insulation from vibrations and enhanced ride comfort. The subframe also serves as a second energy-absorbing platform in a head-on collision. The Transporter’s rear suspension arrangement features semi-trailing arms with compact ‘miniblock’ coil springs and separate dampers. Anti-roll bars are fitted all round.

4MOTION four-wheel drive4MOTION four-wheel drive with electronic control is available with the 140PS and 180PS engines. It automatically transfers power using a Haldex4 system to channel power to the wheels with the most grip; as much as 100 per cent can transfer to the rear wheels if necessary. In normal driving, 90 per cent of the engine’s power is delivered to the front wheels, with 10 per cent going to the rear. This results in characteristics familiar to drivers of front-wheel-drive vehicles, plus improved fuel efficiency compared with a permanent four-wheel-drive system.

The system uses a multi-disc clutch in which the oil pressure responsible for distributing torque to the rear wheels is established by an electric pump that supplies an oil-pressure reservoir. At the same time, the oil pressure accumulator enables the electric pump to be switched off from time to time, thereby reducing fuel consumption. An electronically controlled valve enables the pressure stored in this accumulator to be passed on to the clutch discs where the power flow to the rear wheels can be varied precisely by means of the pressure level.

The clutch carries out the commands

from the electronic control unit extremely rapidly. The unit processes nearly 40 different signals including the steering angle, yaw rates, accelerator setting and engine speed. Not only does this improve traction on poor surfaces, it also contributes to a general improvement in active safety as it helps keep the vehicle under control. Loss of traction on individual wheels is prevented by the electronic differential lock (EDL).

The 4MOTION system adds approximately 100 kg to the GVW of the Transporter and is available on T32 panel vans fitted with 140PS and 180PS engines.

The Transporter’s 4MOTION system automatically transfers power using a Haldex4 clutch to channel power to the wheels with the most grip. As much as 100 per cent can be transferred to the rear wheels if necessary.

Steering, tyres and wheelsThe efficient power-assisted steering delivers excellent steering precision. Its energy-saving pump delivers hydraulic fluid according to demand, so the quantity delivered is always optimal for assisting the steering. For example, during low-speed manoeuvres the power-steering support is at its greatest, while at higher speeds the support and output from the pump decreases, which provides more feedback through the steering wheel. This process reduces the power consumption of the steering pump, and therefore fuel consumption.

Correct tyre pressures are important not only for the driver’s safety but also for achieving optimum fuel consumption and lower tyre wear. A tyre-monitoring indicator, available as an option, continuously checks tyre pressures and alerts the driver of any decrease. When a tyre’s pressure decreases, the cross-section or diameter changes, and the affected wheel rolls faster. The monitoring system uses the ABS wheel rotational-speed sensors to calculate comparatively low tyre pressure on any wheel by measuring the rotational difference. This does not remove the driver’s responsibility to check the vehicle’s tyres regularly, and does not record the exact pressure of the tyre, but acts as an additional safety warning.

Braking systemA four-channel ABS anti-locking system is standard, along with a TCS traction-control system, EBD electronic brake pressure distribution (which automatically alters front/rear braking effort to maximise braking performance), and an electronic differential lock (EDL).

The emergency-braking hazard warning lights function works by flashing the brake lights rapidly if it detects any heavy braking when the vehicle is travelling at speeds over 37 mph, and then automatically activates the hazard warning lights to warn other traffic if the vehicle stops.

Safety systems

Electronic Stabilisation Programme For increased stability in all driving conditions, ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) is standard.The sophisticated system automatically senses any tendency for the vehicle to understeer, oversteer or start to slide and reacts within fractions of a second. If this situation occurs, ESP reacts by applying the brakes to one, two, three or all four wheels and adjusting the engine’s power appropriately. In this way, ESP offers a high degree of driving safety, as it is possible for a skid to be corrected even before the driver is aware that one has started, and it is particularly helpful in wet or icy conditions. ESP includes the following functions:

ARP (Active Rollover Protection) Designed to reduce the risk of overturning, ARP calculates three

Crew protection: Transporter safety systemsdifferent load conditions (empty, half loaded, fully loaded) depending on how much torque is being used.

Ready Alert Brake Designed for faster braking intervention, if the accelerator is released jerkily the brake lining is already applied to the brake disc in order to shorten the braking time and distance.

Brake Fade Support. If the brakes become hot and begin to fade, the brake pressure is automatically increased to restore braking performance.

Hydraulic Brake Assist This advanced system achieves maximum braking if the brake pedal is not activated forcefully enough in emergency braking. HBA can reduce braking distances by around 25 per cent.

Brake disc wiper When the windscreen wipers are switched on above 50 mph, the system automatically applies the brake pad to the brake disc at regular intervals in order to wipe off the unwanted water.

Trailer StabilisationIf the vehicle is ordered with a factory fitted towbar, ESP also includes trailer stabilisation to help keep the vehicle and trailer in line with each other to try to prevent any instability.

Hill Hold control This system prevents the vehicle rolling backwards by utilising a slippage sensor integrated into the ESP control device that recognises when the vehicle stops and maintains the braking pressure, even after the brake pedal is released, until there is any movement of the accelerator pedal.

The Transporter’s ESP system offers a high degree of driving safety, as it is possible for a skid to be corrected even before the driver is aware that one has started, and it is particularly helpful in wet or icy conditions.

Safetysystems

Additional safety featuresLane Change Assist introduces greater technology, convenience and safety to the light commercial vehicle sector. Above 20 mph, this optional feature uses a 24 GHz radar system to scan the area to the sides and rear to monitor if any vehicles are approaching quickly from behind and will be, or already are, in the driver’s blind spot.If it detects a critical situation, it alerts the driver by illuminating a strip of LED lights in the exterior door mirror on the corresponding side of the vehicle.

A reversing camera can help to prevent damage to the vehicle, for example when parking, and has the potential to protect pedestrians by enabling the driver to see anybody walking behind the vehicle.The camera – available in conjunction with the satellite-navigation system – is activated when reverse gear is selected and uses the colour screen to display the rear view, along with dynamic guidance lines to indicate the path the vehicle is taking with the current steering input. The system supplements the acoustic parking sensors.

To improve visibility when turning, cornering lights are integrated into the front fog lights. The system is activated by steering movements and/or the indicators being used at speeds below 25 mph and illuminates a distance of several metres at an angle of 35 degrees.

The Transporter’s bodyshell features a

number of crash safety enhancements. The chassis side members act as the main load paths in the event of a collision and are designed to ‘concertina’, absorbing impact energy as they do so. At collision speeds up to 9.3 mph, the front bumper will absorb impact energy, and body parts located behind will be undamaged.

Options & aftercare

While all Transporter models feature comprehensive standard equipment, for those wishing

to customise their vehicles further, a wide range of factory and Van Centre-fit options are available.

Many options are grouped into packs: for example, a customer could choose one of several Door Packs depending on whether they required a tailgate or wing doors and one or two side doors. There are also various Seat Packs to choose from, including swivelling and/or heated front seats. Load

floor covers and load side linings are also available. Unusually in a commercial vehicle, a range of alloy wheels, a sunroof, six-disc CD autochanger and the latest touchscreen satellite-navigation systems are offered.

The Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ nationwide network of Van Centres is at the customer’s disposal to make sure every Transporter is tailored to their requirements. As expected from Volkswagen, all items are continually monitored for quality and are covered by warranty.

Service intervals have traditionally been set at fixed time or mileage parameters, but the development of engines and LongLife synthetic oil has changed this. Built-in sensors continually monitor oil quality, so a smart chip decides when it needs changing and flags up a service reminder on the dashboard monitor. Service intervals are therefore determined by driving style and patterns.

These long intervals are possible thanks to the use of Castrol SLX LongLife engine oil. This is fully synthetic SAE 0W-30 oil that has been specially formulated to be compatible with the longer service intervals of both petrol and diesel engines.

By removing this oil and using traditional lubricants, it is still possible to have servicing at fixed intervals. The choice is made at PDI (the vehicle’s pre-delivery inspection), and can be changed at a major service.

There are no strict rules on which to base the decision of which servicing regime will be most beneficial to a customer. LongLife oil protects for up to three times the distance of standard oil, but it costs roughly three times as much.

However, cost savings are available from reduced servicing costs, and possible improved fuel economy: operators can expect an average reduction of 2.7 per cent on their fuel bills by using LongLife oil. What’s more, as less oil has to be disposed of with less servicing, there are clear advantages for the environment.

WarrantyAll new Transporters sold through a Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK Van Centre have an unlimited-mileage, three-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. The first two years with no mileage restrictions are manufacturer operated, while the third year (and up to 100,000 miles) is a Van Centre warranty.

In addition, all have a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty and a three-year comprehensive recovery and assistance package. Fully trained technicians are on hand 24 hours a day, every day of the year, to diagnose and repair most problems at the roadside using Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles equipment and genuine parts.
